>> announcer: live in times square this is "good morning america." and good morning, america. you are looking at the scene of that deadly massacre. mother emanuel ame church charleston, south carolina it looks peaceful now but between 8:00 and 9:00 a gunman walked in joined the group and suddenly opened fire and police have just released these surveillance photos of the suspect calling him armed and dangerous. >> here's what we know right now. at least nine people are dead. one other taken to the hospital. the gunman is still on the loose and described as being in his early 20s. police are considering this a hate crime and dozens of fbi agents have been dispatched to help hunt down the killer. >> south carolina the entire south reeling right now because this mother ee emanuel ame church one of the oldest black churches in the south. look at this photo of martin luther king. he spoke there in 1962. it became a center for organizing during the civil rights movement.

so many in church it could be violated this way and abc's steve osunsami is on the scene in charleston, good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, george. this church is directly behind me. the steeple right there, the streets are blocked off here as they search through garage bins and back alleys apparently looking for something this gunman might have dropped. a painful day for families only made worse by the fact this happened at a place of worship. this morning, families here are grieving and praying for the dead. >> it is unfathomable that somebody in today's society would walk into a church when people are having a prayer meeting and take their lives. >> reporter: and what one city official is describing as a targeted attack a white gunman stormed into a bible study at emanuel ame, a historically black church that has remained in the heart of charleston's restaurant and entertainment district. nine church members died right

before god, another wounded. >> i do believe this was a hate crime. >> reporter: moments ago police released this photo of the alleged gunman taken at the area of the shooting. he's described by police as a 21 to 25-year-old white male wearing a distinctive sweatshirt blue jeans and timberland boots and say he was driving a getaway vehicle with a unique front license. they're asking for the public's help in bringing him in. this morning he's still on the run. overnight a massive manhunt. the fbi and the atf joining in the investigation. >> apparently we have someone running around armed. >> reporter: a bomb threat called in mopes after the shooting made things worse forcing familieses and tourists to leave the area. >> these people were in church. they were in church. >> reporter: families of the victims who came together a few blocks away tell abc news the suspect walked into the church and sat down during part of a bible study class before suddenly standing up and firing his gun. >> this is the most unspeakable and heartbreaking tragedy. >> reporter: at 9:05 p.m. police

rushed to the scene. >> we got two people coming out, an adult female and a child. they were found in the room. they need to get checked out. >> reporter: one is the pastor of the church 41-year-old senator clementa pinckney who earned distinction as the youngest african-american state lawmaker in south carolina history. earlier in the day the passion tore had been campaigning with hillary clinton. pinckney leaves a wife and two children. one of the survivors is a 5-year-old police say, who played dead when the shooting started. >> it is a heartbreaking scene i have never witnessed in my life. >> reporter: according to one state representative the gunman told a female survivor he would let her go so she could tell everyone what happened. this is the oldest ame church in the south and will certainly go down as one of the deadliest attacks against a black church in u.s. history. amy? >> all right, steve,hank you for that latest update. joining us with more on the manhunt is abc news consult apartment and former fbi special

agent, brad garrett and, brad we've seen the surveillance images. they are everywhere this morning. how soon before police get their guy? >> i think shortly. amy, i mean you got great pictures a unique tag, a car description, and he wanted everybody to know that he did it. i mean he leaves one person alive to spread the word. so this guy is going to get caught or they're going to find him dead. >> he is a young white male and among the many chilling details, he came into church sat down and attended part of the bible study before he opened fire. what do we know about who this man is and what his motivation may have been? >> well he goes into the church, amy, to sit down because he wants to put them at ease and he also wants to look them in the eye which makes this even more personal before he opens fire. >> he's been described as extremely dangerous. how likely is it that he would try something again? is the community still at risk here? >> i think the big issue is going to be cornering him,

arresting him or finding him. i'm not sure that he's going t go attack maybe another church. this guy is now on the run if he's still alive. >> all right, brad garrett, thank you for the very latest. we're learning more about the victims now. we know there were three males, six female victims inside the church. i want to go to pierre thomas our chief justice correspondent there describing this as a hate crime, pierre. hate crimes across the south on the rise. >> very much so george. this case is being given the highest priority. last night the fbi director was notified and scores of fbi agents have been directed to participate in the investigation and the manhunt. this is being investigated as you said as a potential hate crime because the suspect is a white male and officials are well aware of the south's history in regard to violence against black churches. sow sources were stunned at the cold-blood and challenge that o late -- calculated nature. the new attorney general african-american is a daughter of the south and the child of a

baptist minister. this case unfolds as the southern poverty law center which tracks hate crimes says these are on the rise a 30% increase in numbers since 2000. a disturbing difficult day, george. >> boy, it certainly is pierre thomas. we want to go momentsago. i spoke with an elder at the church. we are joined by an elder at the emanuel church and reverend thank you so much for spending time with us this morning. our prayers are with the victims and their families and i know you spent the night with the families. i can only imagine the shock they are feeling right now. >> well thank you so much for your prayers and we solicited throughout the nation for the nine victims of this heinous crime. we want the public to know that we are having a noonday vigil prayer service at 12:00 noon at march bound church in charleston, south carolina. >> as i said i know you spent the night with the families. what were they able to tell you about what happened inside that

church? >> well the conversation went that they were in bible study, and a young white male came into the bible study and after sitting for a moment or two stood up and began shooting as a result of that we have nine fatalities later this morning we are hoping to have all nine names made available to the public. >> did the shooter say anything before he opened fire? >> not to my knowledge. we would hope that those kinds of questions will be answered by those who are being interviewed by the police chief at this hour along with other investigating bodies which include state local and federal agents and we are being very supportive in urging them to seek justice and we believe that this is a hate crime, one that must be punished as fullest extent of the law.

>> any threats against the church in recent days? >> none to our knowledge. there has not been any threats against church members, the pastor anything to our knowledge. now, the emanuel church is a point of destination for the entire nation and for the state of south carolina. we are a very solid part of the fabric of this community and has been a force for positive change since its inception. >> reverend thank you very much for your time. again our condolences for this loss. >> thank you. also joining us now state senator mar lann kimson from charleston and senator, thank you for joining us. our condolences for this loss. i know you served with pastor pinckney. what can you tell us about this remarkable man? >> well the state of south carolina has lost a giant. senator pinckney was the moral

rain in some areas shutting down roads and highways. rob marciano on the scene in ardmore, oklahoma with the latest. good morning, rob. >> reporter: good morning, amy. a frightening and heartbreaking scenario unfolding last night. the creek you see behind me even higher than it is now up and over this bridge and at 9:00 p.m. a young 2-year-old girl swept downstream. tremendous rain in the wake of tropical storm bill. so many creeks and rivers rising across several states. overnight three texas teens rescued from raging floodwaters in san antonio. >> help me! >> first responders trying to reach them by ladder as they huddled on the roof of their suv. but when it became completely swamped they were forced to swim to nearby trees where rescuers were able to reach them by boat. this morning the three teens are okay but shaken. torrential rain from tropical storm bill surging north. tragedy striking in oklahoma.

>> at some point they got swept away by the water. >> reporter: powerful floodwaters here in ardmore sweeping a toddler out of her father's arms. this morning, rescuers suspending the search. in turner falls park floodwaters rampaging through trees and nearly over that fence. flash flooding trapping this driver in his suv. he and his dog abandoning the car. >> i was more worried about the dog than the car. >> reporter: those heavy downpours making visibility so poor drivers forced to pull over and wait out the storm. this indiana neighborhood completely flooded and more rain expected today. tornado warnings issued in south dakota. an incredible light show seen there. the search for that 2-year-old girl resumes today even after a night of rains, residents here holding out some hope george she'll be found alive. >> okay rob, thanks very much. so much rain there, ginger and more is coming.

>> more is coming. more is falling right now. let's look at the radar. east texas places like trinity, texas, picked up 3 to 6 inches with this band in just the last three hours. tropical depression bill so the remnants of what was the storm are still circulating and sluggishly moving through oklahoma and eventually this model takes you through the next 24 hours. it'll be right there in northern arkansas to springfield and st. louis. moving to the north and east. that's why we see flash flood watches from the border of mexico up to southern illinois. the bull's-eye for the next couple of days is going to be in the ozarks there right there in parts of southern missouri northern arkansas. i'll have a lot more coming up. there is a severe weather threat today. you'll see that soon. >> i know you're on top. to paula faris with the other top stories starting with a close call in one of the nation's busiest airports. >> too close for comfort and faa is investigating a near collision at chicago's midway airport. a southwest airlines flight and a delta flight started taking off on intersecting runways at

the same time. an air traffic controller ordered one of t the planes to stop just in time. the confusion apparently caused by similar sounding flight numbers. and tense moments at this airport in asia. a fire erupted on this plane that just landed in kazakhstan. it turns out an oxygen canister had exploded leaving a gaping hole in the jet. luckily, no one was hurt. and here in new yorkother alleged sympathizer of the terror group isis is under arrest. this time the fbi says the suspect lunged at an agent with a kitchen knife. the 21-year-old was allegedly discussing a plot to attack new york landmarks. and pope francis is weighing in on climate change today. he's issuing a formal church statement urging everyone to take greater responsibility for what he calls our common home. saying global warming is due to human activity and the rich exploiting the poor. critics say the pope is outside his field of expertise. and turning to presidential

politics. jeb bush has canceled his campaign events in south carolina today because of that tragic church shooting. in iowa wednesday "world news tonight" anchor david muir asked him if he felt the need to stance himself from his brother, former president george w. bush. >> there's a real fascination of where i'm different, where i'm the same but when you love someone as your brother or your dad, it's not easy for me to say -- just throw him under the combust to make myself look better. i can't do it. >> bush also shedding some light on his family life telling david he speaks more spanish with his wife and grandkids than he does english. finally, there is a serial offender on the run this morning. a woman was caught eating cereal behind the wheel of her range rover in london. a biker who just happened to be wearing a recording device pulled up yelling this is ridiculous and gave the video to police who could ticket her for eating behind the wheel if they can track her down. you guys but it is still not as egregious as this guy who was caught playing his guitar.

alexander hamilton for a prominent american woman. over the next summer they're collecting your suggestions on social media using #thenew10. eleanor roosevelt, harriet tubman and rosa parks among them. credit goes to a 9-year-old girl named sofia who wrote this letter to president obama last year. >> last week a young girl wrote to ask me why aren't there any women on our currency? >> reporter: in february obama wrote her back and late yesterday sofia got a call from the treasurer of the united states breaking the news. >> she said that there's going to be a woman on the $10 bill and i was really excited. i'll probably tell my kids when i grow up that i was a part of making this happen. >> reporter: it'll be treasury secretary jack lew who gets to make the final decision. the only rule by law the person can't still be alive. the new bill is going to affect -- go into circulation

it happened while the girl was alone in an aisle. her mother was elsewhere in the store. the woman sexually assaulted by jesse matthew in 2005 is expected back in a fairfax county court today. she is scheduled to testify about the affect the -- the effect it had on her life. the judge is expected to come down with an appropriate punishment for jesse matthew. you can get traffic updates on newschannel 8. have a great day.

good morning, america. right now, you're looking live at the scene of that deadly church shooting. the historic mother emanuel ame church in charleston, south carolina. at least nine people are dead. six women, three men, police calling this a hate crime. >> there is a massive manhunt under way for this manage. dozens of fbi agents on the scene. police describing the suspect as a whiteman in his early 20s who entered during a bible study. he stayed for nearly an hour before he began shooting. we will of course stay this story all morning long and i have to say charleston is a place i know and love. i began my reporting career there and my heart just breaks for those families and the entire community this morning. >> so chilling to think that he sat there as part of that prayer group for an hour. of course we are going to stay on this all morning long. we have a lot else to get to this thursday morning as well including an important car safety seat. all of us know how hard it is to

put them in. and all of you have ever had trouble with that stick around for this story. i guarantee you'll feel better. >> yep. important information out there. but we want to begin with the very latest on that manhunt for the escaped killers. we are learning new details this morning about the woman charged with helping them break out. her relationship with one of them and the alleged plot to kill her husband. abc's gio benitez has more now from upstate new york. good morning, gio. >> reporter: amy, good morning to you. we're now learning that before the escape one of the killers gave the prison worker a painting of her kids. it's just one of the new details right now. after nearly two weeks on the run this is what investigators now say escaped convicts richard matt and david sweat may look like. the search for them this morning expanding beyond the immediate area surrounding the prison even as investigators here say they have no hard evidence the escapees have skipped town. you haven't had any leads in the past couple of days?

>> nothing that sub stapts yates their location. >> reporter: this as we're learning more from prosecutors about joyce mitchell the prison worker now behind bars accused of helping the cons flee. >> she had advised us that she was having sexual relationships with matt in the tailor shop. >> in the tailor shop. >> reporter: now prosecutors say mitchell made a phone call to richard matt's daughter before the escape to talk about these paintings matt made while behind bars but perhaps most serious, investigators alleging that mitchell and the escapees discussed a plot to kill her husband, lyle mitchell who also works at the prison. >> her husband must have been pretty shocked when he found out from your team that this was what was going on. >> right. i would think very shocked. >> reporter: so at this point he is not a person of interest. >> at this point in time we have no reason to believe that he was involved in the escape. >> reporter: as for the two runaways they join a club of more than 500 escaped prisoners currently missing in the u.s. and investigators here now pleading with the public for

help. >> take a look at your surroundings if something does not look right, something is out of place, doesn't appear to be appropriate, there's tracks where there shouldn't be tracks please notify the local authorities. >> reporter: meanwhile here as investigators look into whether those prisoners used good behavior privileges to break out of prison we're now learning that the so-called honor block of a prison could be shut down. george. >> i'll bet. thanks very much. we'll turn to a family photo shoot that's turning into a nightmare for one couple. they took these pictures with their toddler dressed up as batman and robin and went viral. that's when the backlash began because they took them on an active train track. abc's david wright spoke with the family. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning. this is one of those cautionary tales in the era of social media. a family photo shoot celebrating their love of a superhero that landed this family in some very hot water including a police investigation and death threats. a father's day photo shoot gone

horribly wrong. father and 15-month-old son dressed as the dynamic duo. the damsel in distress is mom tied to the railroad tracks. when these fans of the cape crusader posted these to facebook. the photos went viral. >> it was pure disbelief. it was just -- it's k surreal family. >> reporter: the bat lash began. >> holy rainbow. >> we have a lot of nice comments initially. >> and then another post of comments we should have our son taken away from us. >> reporter: those train tracks are real. >> i did ask if the train still ran on that track and i was told that it didn't. >> reporter: many took the family to task for putting themselves and their son in jeopardy. since 2012 900 people have been killed or injured trespassing on railroad tracks. among them bravo star greg plitt killed filming on tracks in january last january. but the critics didn't just chastise the daly family. one posted their address online

and threatened to kill them. >> i was terrified and i told them you know we need to sleep in a hotel because i was so scared. i really thought that someone was going to come and show up at our house. >> reporter: the local sheriff gave the family a warning, the chair of the national transportation safety board issued a statement noting that train tracks are private property and are dangerous places where trains kill and injure hundreds of people every year. >> knowing what we know now, that it was illegal, we wouldn't -- i don't think we would do it again. >> reporter: next year they may dress up like batman again but probably they'll stay closer to the bat cave. >> the dalys say they learned their lesson and plan to do a batman shoot every year but no more train tracks. >> thank goodness for that. >> let's turn to paula in the social square with "the speed feed." paula. >> good morning, amy. i challenge everybody not to smile during this story. taking off this morning a viral video that's going to have you laughing almost as much as this

we are back now with new concerns about car seat safety. if you've ever tried to install one, you know how hard it can be but now there is a new call to make it easier to keep our little ones safe on the road. abc's david kerley joins us with more. good morning, david. >> reporter: hey, amy. this is less about the car seats and more about these vehicles in fact this new study out this morning says carmakers need to do a much better job making it easier to put these in. admit it parents. this is you trying to fit a car seat. >> why is it so hard? >> reporter: but this is every parent's worth nightmare. one study shows 70% of child seats installed with a mistake which could mean some injuries to children in accidents are not being prevented. the insurance institute this morning is calling on automakers to make it easier for all parents. they tested 100 cars for the ease of use of the hardware that automakers put in to latch car

that shooter is on the loose at this hour. and we've just received new images of the suspect. he is believed to be about 21 years old. police say he sat in that church for an hour before opening fire and fleeing the scene. sparking an intense manhunt and abc's steve osunsami is there with the latest this morning. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning, to paula. very difficult morning for families here. we're learning there were at least three survivors in that church. one of them a 5-year-old who played dead. another person who the gunman left alive with instructions to tell the world what happened. police are circulating the surveillance photo of the suspect that was taken from the church. he's a young white male with a floppy haircut. light brown hair about 5'9". he is seen entering a four-door sedan. police are looking for that this morning. they are vowing to capture this alleged gunman and calling this a hate crime. >> this is an unfathomable and

unspeakable act by somebody filled with hate and with a deranged mind. >> this tragedy that we're addressing right now is undescribable undescribable. no one in this community will ever forget this night. >> reporter: we're hearing different reports about what happened in the church. how this shooting went down. but one of the things that seems very clear is that this gunman was in the church for about an hour. at one point he was sitting down with the other parishioners but then started screaming some things got up and then started shooting. paula. >> just unfathomable steve. i know you'll follow this story all day. thank you. the attack is a major subject of discussion on social media. one trending topic is whether or not south carolina will fly the confederate flag on top of the state capitol at half-staff.

our other big story, the life-threatening flooding across the middle of the country. what's left of tropical storm bill is dropping up to a foot of rain in some places. in oklahoma the search is resuming for a 2-year-old who was swept out of her father's arms by powerful floodwaters. more widespread flooding expected today as all that rain moves into arkansas and missouri of course we'll have ginger's forecast coming up in a bit. in arizona the opposite problem. hundreds of hopes are threatened by a wildfire southeast of phoenix. winds and the extreme heat fueling that fire and in alaska lightning has sparked nearly a dozen new wildfires. firefighters are arriving today from the lower 48 arriving to help. at&t is facing a $100 million fine over its unlimited data plans. the country's second largest wireless carrier is accused of failing to properly inform customers with unlimited plans that their internet speeds would be slowed down after they use up a certain portion of data.

parking lot early this week but after an altercation with three men he was shot multiple times and killed. >> the occupants in the vehicle attempted to drive away at which time the victim held on to the driver's side of the vehicle. >> police say the suspects left their car and cook's cell phone at the scene before fleeing on foot. last year alone 2.1 million americans had their cell phones stolen. remember that seattle family who used a cell phone tracking app to chase down their cellular culprit, the 911 operator pleading for them to pull over. >> i've been on the phone with someone just like in that was killed over a cell phone and i really don't want that to happen to you. okay. it's just really not worth it. >> reporter: while many of us may be willing to put ourselves in harm's way to retrieve a stolen phone, experts say it's just not worth it. >> when you misplace something or you lose something, you use the app to find something. but the minute you think you have reason to believe that it's stolen you call the police.

called "the astronaut wives club" all about the women behind the men who launched into space and, of course changed the course of history. jesse, you sat down with one of the show's stars. >> i had a chance to talk to the supremely talented joanna swisher. the actress who plays betty grissom, the second lady of space. her husband gus grissom was the first nasa astronaut to fly into space twice and meanwhile she was back on earth trying to stay grounded. here's a look at a scene from "the astronaut wives club." >> hey, hon, you okay? >> gus is going up next. i'm going to be the second lady of space. >> you're the wife of the first nastia astronaut that nasa astronaut that gets to go to space. there's a competition going on between the astronauts. how did that affect their wives? >> it was such a unique circumstance. these women were simple military wives and were kind of thrown together and, you know their husbands obviously were chosen for this very elite group that it was obviously so exciting but

there was a lot of terror involved. there were so many unknowns so many -- you didn't know if they were going to make it back. there was just a lot of questions so they came together. the story is really a story of sisterhood. a story of friendship coming together in a very unique unusual situation and how they supported each other through it. >> now, did you get a chance to speak to the woman who you portray? >> yes. >> what did she tell you. >> i met betty after the filming and grew to love betty and i have a lot of love for her and a lot of respect. betty was an incredible partner and certainly was not afraid to fight for gus and his legacy and i really understand that as a wife. i'm betty grissom. gus' wife so i took my marriage and that sense of commitment and friendship and wanting to protect and always honor that. ♪ [ applause ] >> you guys filmed it all in new orleans. >> we did. >> one of my favorite cities. >> amazing. >> did you guys have -- the cast were you able to actually enjoy the city? did you have any fun adventures?

>> yes. yes, momma caught a few beads. okay. i came by them in the honorable way by a friendly manner not having to do anything you know too scandalous but we definitely -- i think that it was a great thing that for this particular story because we were all put into a new city and we were each other's support group and i think it really helped create this instant bond between pus and eventhe stronauts,all of us we came a little tribe and we ate our way and drank our way through that city. after a while it was like we got to start cooking. >> and something really interesting about gus as well for a man who dedicated his life to exploring space he said that he used to like to spend a quiet evening with his wife and children in his own living room. important to remember these astronauts were absolute rock stars. they spent so much time away from their families but gus grissom a very good father aman. >> so brave. >> huge part of our culture. can't wait for this. thank you, jesse.
