the floods and power outages. out west, hundreds of homes threatened by wildfires. thousands of firefighters battling flames. can they get it contained? and hanging way more than ten. dozens of surfers gathering on a surfboard trying to set a record. did they pull it off or wipe out? good morning and happy father's day. we'll celebrate the day a little bit later on in the show. but first, e we want to get to the pictures right out of charleston, south carolina. they're expecting a full house at the church, as the church returns to its original purpose this time. four days after that massive massacre. >> nine roses.

in remembrance of the nine victims murdered at a bible study. this as a website that surfaced that appears to be the creation of the 21-year-old suspect dylann roof, federal investigators now trying to authentic. often posing with his gun. it also contains a deeply racist manifesto against blacks hispanics ss and jews. our coverage begins with steve osunsami who's at the church. good morning, steve. >> reporter: in some of those photos, the accused gunman is seen posing at confederate monuments. and burning the american flag. police this morning, are telling us, he's cooperating with their investigation. this morning, haunting words and pictures from authorities think may be a manifesto from the 21-year-old accused of murders of a bible study group. pointing the gun at the camera posing with a gun in one hand and the stars and bars in the other.

dylann roof's is being held on a million-dollar bail this morning and police say he's confessing. the rant online was filled with hate. "i chose charleston because it is the most historic city in my state and at one time had the highest ratios of blacks to whites in the country. we have no skinheads, no real kkk, well someone has to have bravery to take it to the real world and i guess that has to be me." ♪ >> reporter: today, vigils and services across the city will celebrate the lives of the nine people roof's accused of murdering. and bells are ringing in their honor. overnight, pendleton took our cameras to the vigil. it's unbelievable to be back at his childhood church under these circumstances. >> it's rough. it's unexplainable when you lose a parent. >> reporter: we're meeting families who are coming here

from across the country. >> people are pained by this. it's wrong. >> healing here. god can take any tragedy and turn it around into his goodness and his love. that's my prayer. >> reporter: we're meeting people like mildred, friends of victims here. who say they're still scared. >> are there still more coming? is this going to start a civil racial war? what is this -- what is this all about? >> reporter: there are vigils and services across this city today, and now the first of several funerals, for the pastor of this church is now scheduled for the end of this week. dan? >> steve osunsami, thank you. as those services are held in charleston this morning, 115 miles away at the south carolina statehouse, the confederate flag flies high.

this massacre opening a painful debate about what many people see as a symbol of slavery. jeb bush and mitt romney have come out against the flag. so, will it come down? let's go to abc's martha raddatz who will be anchoring "this week." martha while romney and bush have taken a stand many other republicans aren't sure, where do you think is this debate heading? >> i certainly think it will intensify. this is an emotional issue in this city and in this state. we talked to the mayor of charleston yesterday, he feels very strongly about bringing that flag down. we heard from rallies, bring it down. and those words from jeb bush and mitt romney do have some power, it reopens the debate in a very, very strong way. >> we also saw the senator from that state, lindsey graham, when

didn't want to take the flag down at all. he's one of the most powerful figures in that state. >> dan, there will be resistance, but lindsey graham didn't really take a position, dan, he just said, maybe we need to talk about this again, and i think people here think perhaps that's some progress. >> okay, this debate will continue as you said. martha raddatz, thank you. and a reminder, martha will have much more live from charlest coming up later on "this week." the powerful new message with some of the victims' families. that's later this morning right here on abc. paula. >> thanks, dan. now to the fast-moving developments in the manhunt for the dangerous escaped killers. several possible sightings for the two men who have been on the run for over two weeks. authorities believe they're closing in on the murderers. and abc's linzie janis has more. >> reporter: good morning, paula.

a busy day of searching in southwestern new york. they're focusing their efforts on the town of friendship, about a six-hour drive from this prison. the escapees possibly getting there by freight train. overnight, a search frenzy sparked by multiple reported sightings of escaped convicts richard matt and david sweat in western new york. state police, local sheriffs descending on the town of friendship with helicopters, roadblocks and canines as searchers scour interstate 86. >> he's traveling east off of i-86. by the tracks. have a confirmed track of two individuals need assistance at that location. >> reporter: officers reportedly zeroing in on the suspects. the dragnet moving nearly 400 miles this week when the fugitives were spotted in erwin and lindley, new york. while's unclear how they traveled that far, all of the recent sightings have been near train yards. this rail map revealing many of

the reported sightings have been along this freight line, which runs through david sweat's hometown, just 176 miles from the new search area. >> i have a caller on the phone, stated two male individuals just approached him outside his home, both wearing dull-colored outfits, blue jeans, flannel-type hoodies. >> reporter: police calling the possible sightings credible. and warning residents in the area not to approach the suspects but many are arming themselves just in case. >> we're kind of preparing, because being in the country, we always think we should be ready for anything like this. >> reporter: meanwhile, a second prison worker linked to the investigation, questioned by the fbi and police for nearly 14 hours overnight. gene palmer were you the escapees' guard? >> no comment at this time. i'm here on my own free will.

>> reporter: witnesses struggling frantically. finally pulling him out of the pipe. today that boy bruised and battered but safe. scary times across southern illinois. another one to two inches expected there. with system number two. what's left of bill potentially across the northeast where they can use the rain out west, completely dry across the entire west coast. red flag warnings. and the heat continues. not good news for the fires. we want to move to those wildfires out west. conditions worsening, hundreds of structures now in danger. hot, dry conditions, the largest fire is in california, that's where abc's ryan owens joins us. good morning, ryan. >> pauod morning to you. there are 1800 firefighters on this one blaze alone. they're making some progress. what they really need is a break from mother nature. thousands of firefighters are now battling wildfires scorching

the state of california. >> it's hard. it's hard. so, we're not really sure what to expect tomorrow morning. >> reporter: overnight, some residents urged to evacuate as this fire in santa margarita in central california, burns more than 1,000 acres. 500 buildings are threatened here as the so-called "lake fire" burns up more than 16,000 acres. helicopter crews at the popular big bear lake dropping thousands of gallons of water. their colleagues on the ground battling not just the heat but that terrain. >> the extreme heat, the extreme working conditions are making it difficult for us to get a handle on some of the areas of the fire. >> reporter: it's only the beginning of the fire season. but already six states are battling wildfires. in arizona, female inmates trucked in to beat back one of the largest fires burning in that state. in alaska, crews are nearly overwhelmed with 40 active

wildfires chewing through more than 83,000 acres. the governor declaring a disaster in this peninsula after fire ravaged multiple towns there. as you heard rob said, unfortunately more dry, hot weather in the forecast, so, likely, another very long day on those fire lines. dan and paula. >> no rest for the weary. ryan owens, thank you. let's check in with ron. who's got the other stories we're following this morning, including a manhunt in new orleans. good morning, everyone. we begin with that police manhunt going on right now for a suspect accused of killing a veteran new orleans officer. the shooting occurred inside his patrol car, holloway was transferring the suspect, he managed to get his arms from behind him to in front of him. police believe he was double-jointed.

able to shoot the officer in the head. he then took off on foot. no word on where that gun came from. officer holloway's service gun was still in his holster. overseas now, pope francis posing in private prayer. in front of the shroud of tourin. thousands of people have come to view it, the 14-foot-long linen cloth. people believe that it's the burial shroud that covered jesus christ. and a new clue in the search for the former white house chef who disappeared during a hike in new mexico more than a week ago. abc news has learned that they traced his cell phone signal to the top of the mountain around lobo peak. but the ping was from the day he disappeared. the way down is said to be extremely difficult and steep. scheib was amateur hiker. he was hired by the clintons and spent 11 years for working for the presidents at the white house.

study shooting. worshipers gathering this morning at the emanuel ame church. this as the fbi investigates a manifesto allegedly belonging to dylann roof. now they're zeroing in on the new york/pennsylvania border, reported sightings of the escaped convicts. all of the recent sightings of richard matt and david sweat have been near train yards. and utah police are investigating this video that appears to show a preteen boy behind the wheel of a big rig semitruck, the video shows the child driving on a busy country highway, as cars zoom by him, at one point, the boy asked the person shooting the video to the take the wheel because he's scared. finally, thousands gathering in stonehenge to welcome the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. it marks the summer solstice.
