alex perez starts us off in coal city. good morning. >> reporter: many here are waking up to scenes just like this one, the winds picking up all of this debris and slamming it up against this house and just here right on the other side what used to be a car wash now basically a pile of rubble. >> i can't believe how close it is. >> never seen winds that strong. >> reporter: look at this wedge tornado forming near illinois city. winds whipping up debris so strong these telephone poles struggling to remain upright. transformers exploding. >> there's whole houses down. we need units over here. >> reporter: a tornado striking coal city just southwest of chicago. >> we had significant damage throughout the whole town here. >> reporter: overnight emergency crews responding in the dark to collapsed homes, gas leaks, people reportedly still trapped under rubble. >> is everybody here okay? >> yes, they're all okay. >> reporter: earlier in the evening, first responders'

vehicles trapped and destroyed before they could help others. to the east portland michigan blasted by an ef-1 tornado. >> we're starting searches with canines, both live and cadaver dogs. >> reporter: abc's matt gutman was there on the ground. >> reporter: the tornado came up from there. it ripped the roof off of that church. then this church and then a third church all on the same block right across the corner. >> reporter: a drone's view showing trees shredded and roofs ripped off. in one of those churches you can see the steeple plummeting straight into the place of worship and there a semi tossed against a local thrift store, dozens of rescuers trying to get three temporarily trapped inside. sue burns' roof sucked right off her house. >> i had beams flying at me and i just hit the ground. >> reporter: moments later, reunited with her husband. in iowa winds smashing into an airport hangar debris crushing five planes. and luckily there were no

fatalities or serious injuries here. this town was slammed by a tornado just two years ago and now that difficult process of cleaning up and rebuilding starting all over again. robin. >> it is alex thank you. thinking of all those affected and more than 70 million in the northeast in the path of those storms headed this way. >> there are severe storms on the map. this is early morning damage just hours ago between flint and saginaw, michigan. wjrt and marc jacobson just took this. fresh damage coming in. western pennsylvania and new york the severe thunderstorm warnings and watches will move to the east. they'll progress. now i have this model on here that shows you it's scattered in nature. not going to be just one big time you'll see several rounds of storms some of them will come with damaging winds and right there this evening, d.c. all the way up to boston look at that. we're all in that enhanced risk. it's not just the northeast but another low back here afternoon and evening from lincoln to close to kansas city hail and

damaging wind david, back in the western plains just east of the rockies too. >> we know you'll stay on it all morning long. thanks. we turn to the latest on the manhunt for those escaped killers. police are now narrowing their search after discovering dna evidence from the vicks at a hunting cabin near the prison. food inside that cabin, abc's linzie janis is in owls head new york. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, david. a heavy police presence here. officers with their shotguns at the ready have established this perimeter around that area where the cabin is deep in the woods. this morning, authorities pursuing their biggest break so far in the manhunt for escaped convicts david sweat and richard matt. focusing on everything they can find inside a hunting shack. just 20 miles from the prison. >> we have developed evidence that the suspects may have spent time in a cabin in this area. >> reporter: dna tests on food items left in the cabin in

franklin county confirming the inmates were inside. >> this is a confirmed lead for us. it has generated a massive law enforcement response as you can see and we're going to run this to ground. >> reporter: abc news learning overnight john stockwell who was at the hunting ground saturday with his dog discovered signs of people inside the shack that afternoon. he says he saw at least one man running away. stockwell was questioned by police over the weekend. authorities swarming the area monday setting up checkpoints inspecting every car, searching for clues in the woods. local residents scared. have you been worried about this? have you been able to sleep at night. >> no actually. we found out yesterday so we were up all night. >> reporter: police advising everyone in the area to remain on alert. >> take any necessary safety precautions and remain vigilant about reporting anything anything that is out of the ordinary. >> reporter: again, police focusing their search right here near the prison not far away

increased demands to remove this contentious symbol from south carolina's state capitol. >> that flag while an integral part of our past does not represent the future. it's time to move the flag from the capitol grounds. [ applause ] >> reporter: legislators standing beside her in support, including u.s. senator and gop 2016 contender lindsey graham who only days ago wanted discussion but now urging the flag's removal to an appropriate location seven other southern states use confederate imagery in their flag three of them mississippi, tennessee and florida also now calling for change. as the nation continues to grapple with the horror of the brutal slayings of nine black churchgoers by accused killer dylann roof. the reaction to the debate is now deeply connected to these pictures of roof proudly displaying confederate images. >> it's a symbol of division among everyone in our society.

stores in almost a dozen states. over fears of e. coli contamination. the company issuing this alert. boil water before using. finding e. coli bacteria during a test of its pennsylvania water supply this month. niagara water voluntarily pulling them from stores because e. coli can cause things like nausea and severe cramping especially dangerous for children and the elderly. >> one of the ways a company knows their water is safe to drink is testing it for e. coli. if they find e. coli in there, there's something wrong with their process. >> reporter: it doesn't mean everyone who drinks water contaminated with e. coli will get sick. but with 10 billion gallon ss consumed every year there's the big question how can you know if the water in the bottle you're reaching for is safe? in most cases you can't. >> there are actually more rules and regulations around tap water. epa requires that all the information about your tap water

♪ tom brady a week ago cutting loose and sweating it out on the dance floor at a party celebrating histeam's super bowl win but this morning, brady will be sweating it out in a conference room at nfl headquarters in new york where his legacy as one of football's all-time greats is on the ne. >> tom brady really needs to have a performance like a super bowl this terms of the hearing and has to rehabilitate his image. >> reporter: at issue whether his suspension should stand. ted wells is expected to testify who wrote the report alleging brady had been at least generally aware of the actives leading to it and serving as arbitrator nfl commissioner roger goodell who chose to personally oversee this appeal despite objections from brady's camp. both sides will get a chance to present their cases to goodell and call witnesses which gives brady a chance to say as much or as little as he wants. >> tom brady has been given an invitation by roger goodell to

his son's school. abc's kayna whitworth is live in los angeles this morning with more on that. good morning, kayna. >> reporter: hey, david, good morning to you. so i'm live here at the campus police department at ucla. this was the first place that combs was taken after he swung a kettle bell allegedly at the football team's strength coach and this morning, police are considering that gym equipment a deadly weapon. overnight sean combs posting bail hours after being arrested for allegedly threatening a strength coach at his son's ucla football workout with a kettle bell. tmz reporting the assistant coach was screaming at 21-year-old justin combs. his father watching from the sidelines then allegedly grabbing the coach and confronting him. in a statement, ucla says no one was seriously injured. ♪ i don't know what i don't know why ♪ >> reporter: but the 45-year-old rapper known to fans as diddy seen here in the back of air police car then in handcuffs being walked into the jail now facing three counts of assault with a deadly weapon one count

of making terrorist threats and one count of battery. this isn't the first time combs has had run-ins with the law. in 1999 he was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and stolen goods. but later acquitted. combs is a passionate supporter of his son justin's football career. here he is beaming at justin's first game with ucla. >> nebraska ucla my son's first game. words can't explain. >> reporter: combs even posting this photo a father/son football game on father's day just hours before the arrest. now, nobody was actually hurt but the strength coach here reportedly -- many might remember him. in 2010 he was suspended for tripping a miami dolphins football player while he was on the coaching staff for the jets. and, david and robin, combs is set to appear in court on july 13th. >> all right, kayna, thanks very much. we've been following the severe weather, also fooling the wildfires in the west and dan has the latest on that.

>> good morning, everyone. there's been no break from the heat for the men and women fighting 23 major wildfires in six states and ginger tells me there will be no break any time soon. the largest one in california called the lake fire scorched 17,000 acres and is only 24% contained. 200 miles north at least three homes have burned and people now being evacuated and in alaska more than 3,000 fighters -- firefighters are on the battle lines. in baltimore this morning all six police officers charged in the death of freddie gray have pled not guilty set to go on trial in october. gray's death while in police custody set off days of rioting back in april. well we now know what upset an airline passenger so much last weekend that he turned a rome to chicago flight into a two-day ordeal. nuts and crackers or a lack thereof. he was angry he hadn't been given any snacks. the complaint says he became abusive and erratic forcing the flight to be diverted to belfast where passenger has to sleep on the floor.

look at this from off the coast of cape cod. that is a 15-foot great white shark. the first to be seen in these waters this year and it is a week earlier than the first sighting last year. new evidence indicates that pete rose may have done more betting on baseball than he's admitted to. our colleagues at espn say they have found new documents that suggest rose bet on games in 1986 during his last season as a player. more than a decade ago he admitted to betting on games but only as a manager. a plane crash has much of hollywood in mourning. james horner who wrote the music for "titanic" and more than 100 other movies is believed to have died when his small plane crashed north of los angeles. he was nominated for ten times for oscars winning for "my heart will go on" from "titanic." and finally this morning a big win for team usa at the women's world cup. they got off to a slow start missing a penalty kick early in the second half but took the lead and took the lead a few minutes late weather a pair of

former vanderbilt university football players convicted of an alcohol-fueled sex crime which could potentially set the men free. >> did you answer the voir dire questions truthfully. >> reporter: asking for a mistrial after learning the jury foreman didn't reveal he himself was a sexual assault victim. the foreman testifying he didn't think his prior experience affected his judgment in that case. >> that had been sort of inconsequential at this point into my life. >> reporter: he voted to convict the two of aggravated rape and other charges in january after just three hours of deliberations. to win a mistrial you have to show that it undermines the integrity of the verdict. >> we find mr. vandenburg guilty of vag gras rated rape. >> reporter: the two men seen here along with two others accused of bringing an unconscious victim to vandenburg's room after a night of heavy drinking in june 2013 where she was sexually
