team usa gearing up for its toughest test yet, taking on the best team in the world, the top two teams facing off for a chance at world cup glory. the american women ready to go big or go home. . and good morning, america. happy tuesday. boy, all kinds of excitement for team usa's big game tonight. >> let's go usa. the u.s. and germany have both won the women's world cup twice. one of those teams now will have a shot at the three-peat. >> coming up tonight, a lot more on that ahead. right now we begin with breaking news. a military jet crashed into a hotel. dozens have died in a residential neighborhood in indonesia and david kerley tracking all the details right now. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, george. at this hour we're getting a clearer picture of how deadly this crash in indonesia really is. at least three dozen dead.

the big four-engine turboprop transport plane, a c-130 came down in a residential area in north sumatra. a couple of houses and part of a three-story hotel burned too. a military air base is nearby and a police chief in the city of medan says there were 50 people on board this plane, according to its manifest. this is a picture of an indonesian c-130, a very large aircraft that can be used to transport troops or cargo. indonesian air force officials say it developed engine trouble minutes before takeoff. whether it includes innocent victims on the ground is unknown. one body recovered is a child, probably a 1-year-old still as of this hour the death toll stands at 37. there are some survivors, george in local hospitals but, again, unclear if they're from the aircraft or were on the ground when this plane went down. >> yeah, a lot more to come on that story, david, thanks very much.

george we want to move now to that wildfire burning in washington state. scorching dozens of homes forcing thousands to evacuate and there is little relief in sight. abc's neal karlinsky is on the front lines there, fire is burning just behind him. good morning to you, neal. >> reporter: lara, goodmorning. this is what's left of a fruit plant in downtown wenatchee that continues to burn. you can see where part of the building is collapsed and siding has melted over there. all of this from a blaze that has wreaked havoc on this small town. this morning, the outline of a neighborhood but without the homes. at least 4 burned to the ground by in that exploded under high winds and scorching triple-digit temperatures. >> oh, i'm so sorry. >> reporter: homeowners who lost everything learned it burned so hot few of their belongings were recognizable. >> looks like a war zone. never seen anything like it. i don't even have a fork or a plate or -- clothing. just your basic things we all

take for granted. it's just gone. >> reporter: this house is one of the closest calls we've seen. the fire came down the hill. the firefighters were here and left their hoses. they saved the house but look at the siding melted like a candle. wenatchee, this town of 30,000 suffered a double whammy. fire ripping through hillside neighborhoods and several large businesses downtown. ignited by blowing embers and for a team leaking ammonia. nearly half the city was ordered to shelter in place to avoid the dangerous smoke plume. >> we heard four or five really big, loud explosions. >> reporter: as strike teams pounce on hot spots around this town, many here are worried the worst may not be behind them. >> it's going to be a scary season. >> reporter: the fire is officially now 10% contained but we haven't seen any real flames in the hills where the hopes are located from the wildfire in at least 4 hours and firefighters are hopeful they may have turned a corner on this one. >> we hope so too. thank you so much. the triple-digit heat fueling the fires is only

getting worse. ginger zee has the latest good morning, ging. >> just starting to see pockets of extreme heat watch, heat advisories coming back up. you dipped in the 90s but back into the 100s we will go. spokane, 94. portland, 91. a big ridge off the west then it dips into the northeast and at least parts of the great lakes and that's why we had such active severe weather in places like minnesota. look at these pictures coming out of the twin cities. wow, it looks like almost snow and here yes, the visibility goes to near zero. this is the north suburbs of the twin cities and it just stopped in traffic and you can see how the visibility -- today damaging wind atlanta, nashville all the way up into the mid-atlantic. one little pocket out in the northern plains. much more coming up. >> we'll turn to that captured killer david sweat. he's been talking to law enforcement a lot laying out all the details of his prison break the original getaway plan and why he split up with richard matt. abc's linzie janis is in malone new york with the latest.

good morning, linzie. >> reporter: good morning, george. investigators have been conducting lengthy interviews with david sweat who remains in the hospital in serious condition this morning. he has been telling them about that brazen plot and about how he and matt eluded authorities for three weeks. this morning, convicted cop killer david sweat is in custody and revealing stunning new information to investigators from his hospital bed. details on the escape plot he and fellow inmate richard matt devised. authorities say the two men planned a run south of the border with former prison worker joyce mitchell. >> they would kill mitchell's husband and then get in the car and drive to mexico. on the theory that mitchell was in love with one or both of them. >> reporter: the plot quickly unraveling when mitchell got cold feet and didn't show up with the getaway car. now mitchell speaking out from behind bars her lawyer telling abc news his client is ecstatic both that the manhunt has ended and also that it that peers no

harm came to any other person. sweat also revealing to authorities that gene palmer was not involved in the escape plan. according to officials the convicted killers seen on this surveillance camera in the woods just last week decided to head towards canada. for the best part of three weeks, the two sticking together eluding checkpoints and police searches in the dense woods. but sweat telling officials they separated in the final five days because matt was slowing him down. >> they got him down here. >> reporter: matt spending some of his final hours in this abandoned camper before being shot and killed by police friday. you could see how somebody could hide out in here. >> very easily. it's dry and would keep you from the elements at least. >> reporter: 48 hours later state police sergeant jay cook spotted sweat running on a road. sergeant cook chasing him then shooting him twice. local residents celebrating in the streets, relieved it's

finally over. >> we have our town back. we just -- we feel great. >> reporter: a state police source tells abc news morning that sweat also told investigators he and matt had a transistor radio they would use to listen to news on the manhunt and matt was smoking pot slowing him down. george. >> that would slow you down. okay, linzie thanks very much. to donald trump. nbc giving him a taste of his own medicine saying you're fired thereby ending its relationship with him removing him as host of the apprentice" and dropping his beauty pageants. linsey davis has the story. >> reporter: this morning, donald trump is firing back after nbc turned those two little words he made famous on his show "the apprentice" back at him. >> you're fired. you're fired. you're fired. >> reporter: nbc's decision to cut ties with the real estate mogul comes nearly two weeks after trump made these offensive remarks about mexican immigrants during his presidential announcement.

>> they're bringing drugs, they're bringing crime. they're rapists. >> reporter: nbc issuing a statement monday citing trump's recent derogatory statements regarding immigrants as the reason they were ending their business relationship with mr. trump adding that the miss usa and miss universe pageants will no longer air on nbc. the donald who was greeted by roughly 100 protesters at a chicago speaking engagement monday is now threatening to sue and speaking out against nbc. >> they didn't want me to run because they wanted to do "the apprentice" and now with my statements on immigration which happen to be correct, they are going to take a different stance. >> reporter: just last week univision announced it would no longer air miss usa or miss universe because of his comments. trump's comments monday un unapologetic sounding much more like someone who quit than got fired. >> i think as far as ending the relationship i have to do that because my view on immigration is much different than the people at nbc.

>> reporter: mexican media giant televisa announced late yesterday it will no longer air the miss usa pageant about you a spokesman released a statement from the pageant saying the contest will still take place july 12th and saying we are disheartened by recent events but the show will go on. the broadcast at this point will not be at donald would say huge. >> not this time okay thanks very much. he is though part of a huge field of presidential hopefuls about to get bigger. chris christie expected to officially launch today bying the number of republican candidates 14 4 democrats running too and we're joined by our political analyst matthew dowd. donald trump, are we still at the point where all publicity is good for him. >> i say, welcome to the show because running for president is a lot different than real estate and reality tv and watching donald trump reminds me a little of the disney movie "inside out" where we're hearing out loud and in realtime all the voices in

establishment and social conservatives and nobody has bound them together which is the reason why we're in this situation with this many candidates. >> real free-for-all. matt thanks. moving on to new details on that small plane that crashed into a massachusetts home everyone on board was killed but the four people inside that home somehow managed to escape. and this morning, they're speaking out about that incredible close call. abc's gio benitez is in plainville, massachusetts, with our story. good morning to you, gio. >> reporter: lara good morning to you. just take a look behind me. that is the charred home and just looking at it incredible how anyone survived here. a miracle inside this planeville, massachusetts, home hit by a small plane, the family of four inside at the time somehow surviving and speaking out this morning. >> my wife and my boys were upstairs when the plane hit. the boys' rooms are the ones you see burnt out behind me. >> reporter: the rice family perfectly positioned in the home to avoid disaster. the two sons 10 and 14 were in

their rooms on the second floor. the mother was in the hallway. the father in the kitchen downstairs. the plane slicing through that house, they hear a bang see a fireball and run out. it takes just seconds for the house to go up in flames. people watching in shock. >> it sounded like a bomb. when it hit, i could feel the heat on my face. >> i have an emergency at this house. >> reporter: joseph and betty from tennessee were flying their daughter nicole to an orientation to a university sunday when their small plane crashed into that house. all three were killed. >> we have no engines. i need help. >> reporter: this morning the rice family is thinking about the kalisters. >> we need to have support for that family. they're in far graver circumstances than we are. >> reporter: and you heard that pilot there mention some sort of engine failure. well, it turns out the ntsb is now here investigating to figure out exactly what brought down that plane. lara.

right now we begin with new trouble at the university of virginia. this time hazing. a former member of the swim team filed a lawsuit against five teammates claiming he feared for his life because the hazing was so extreme. abc's mara schiavocampo with the story. good morning. mara. >> reporter: good morning. that student says he came to uva with dreams of competing at the highest levels but instead his time there ruined his athletic career. the claims just the latest in the string of image problems for the university. this morning, from the pool to the courtroom, 19-year-old anthony marcantonio taking on alleged hazing at uva filing a lawsuit claiming that systemic threatening, degrading, humiliating and violent hazing by five upper classmen cost him his swim career at the university. >> they threatened him with sexual violence of a very awful variety. they were locked into a bathroom and told to drink vast quantities of alcohol. they were imprisoned in the

bathroom. >> reporter: the suit claiming the upperclassmen berated and assaulted marcantonio and other new team members known as welcome week. one of the new team members even allegedly sustained an eye injury during the activities. allegedly told by one of the uppers to lie when questioned about how he got it. the team's question eded marcantonio but when the teammates found out they saw him as a rat and from that time forward the plaintiff's swim year at uva was ruined. >> interest that moment on he couldn't get in the pool when the other swimmers were there as the coach put it to him, i can't guarantee your safety. and he had to leave. >> reporter: following the reported hazing uva suspended the upper classmen for the rest of that semester. none of them ever rejoined the team. two transferring to different schools. one of the parents of the upper classmen telling ab news on behalf of all the defendants they have not been served so can't comment on the suit adding

"these issues are not new. they were internalally investigated by the university of virginia and handled appropriately." now, uva told abc news overnight it investigated the allegations and, quote, took prompt action to provide support services to the affected opportunities. this lawsuit seeks damages of over $75,000 though the sack amount has not been disclosed. >> mara thanks very much. all right, george. now to that incident raising a lot of questions at an air show. how did a 6-year-old get behind the controls of a helicopter and then manage to start the engine? abc's alex perez has the story. >> reporter: an air show scare caught on camera. this medical transport helicopter accidentally powered up on the tarmac but that's not the pilot behind the controls it's a 6-year-old boy. the mayo kline he can's chopper on display at the minnesota air spectacular saturday. the child apparently able to climb into the unattended

cockpit and turn on the $10 million aircraft. you see the confusion among the spectators as the rotors move and the wind blowing over a sun shade that hit two people injuring them. >> it is not easy to get one of these started. it's not intuitive. the one thing i wonder was he playing a video game that had a correct representation of this. >> reporter: the mayo clinic telling abc news it removed the mayor 1 from service for inspection and maintenance as it along with the ntsb and faa now look into how this happened. here's an inside look at the control panel of the same mayo chopper. you can see how complex it is. how the young man was able to navigate and operate it is a real mystery. >> i would think somebody might want to already extend him a scholarship. >> reporter: for "good morning america," alex perez, abc news. >> amazing story. >> interesting. such presence of mind to go save the day. >> but the video game concept is

interesting. duff certainly knows how to work his way around a control. >> i never would have thought about that. a video game that i akid could figure it out. one tough texas grandma. the woman surviving 48 hours stranded in a ravine after her car went off the road. she is recovering in a hospital this morning and clayton sandell has the story. >> reporter: this morning, one tough grandmother, wanda mobley thankful to be alive after two days stranded in a texas ravine. her ordeal beginning friday as she was driving to a family reunion in oklahoma. >> she swerved to miss an animal in the road basically just went off and down a ravine. >> reporter: mobley injured the crash unable to walk up the steep ravine. >> i crawled on my hands and knees back to the car. >> reporter: when she didn't make it to her destination by nightfall her worried family launching a frantic search. >> everything goes through your mind. i mean we stopped every silver chevrolet we saw because we

window. just put a fresh coat of paint on it and have a table ready to go. >> anything we should worry about. sometimes they used lead paint on them. if we use an old window as a tabletop might want to be careful about that. >> exactly. a lot of times most places they will double-check if you go to buy it at an antique store if there is lead paint because that's what you want to be careful of. we suggest new coat of paint on top of that. >> these little legs these sawhorse legs can you get these at a hardware store but chic and big in design so you can find high-end versions, not what we're talking about, very in face. >> we're going very hgtv right now. >> one more addition to our backyard party and this comes from shosura in north carolina let's watch. >> i only have one light outside my house for lighting. so i want to know what can i do for lighting? >> all right, you asked and we
