[cheers and applause] this is "nightline." tonight, the war against hazing. an olympic hopeful on an elite college swim team says the upper class men made him fear for his life. just the latest in a recent string of allegations from campuses across america. from channing tatum to mark wahlberg. many of hollywood's leading men were models first. could this guy be the next fresh face to make it big? tonight, one man's journey from a trailer to the runway. and the hard lessons he learned along the way. this job is not as glamorous as it looks. and celebrity split. ben affleck and jennifer garner are divorcing, going public on the day after their tenth anniversary. they met on the set of pearl

hazing on college campuses is often seen as innocuous. but we begin with a new lawsuit filed by a stuns at one of america's most prestigious universities that is shining light on ra underworld where the hazing ranges from horribly degrading to truly dangerous. when 19 year old anthony mark antonio, an olympic hopeful enrolled in the university of virginia one of america's premiere institutions of higher learning he could never have imagined what he says happened to him when he joined the swim team. >> they threatened him with sexual violence of a very awful variety. they were locked into a bathroom and told to drink vast quantities of alcohol. think were imprisoned in the bathroom and couldn't get out. and through it they were threatened. >> reporter: he has filed a lawsuit claiming that violent haszing cost him him swim

career. >> from that moment on he couldn't get in the pool when the other swimmers were there, as the coach put it to him, i can't guarantee your safety. >> reporter: his lawsuit is the latest in a growing war against hazing. alleged victims emerging from the shadows to expose what many believe is an epidemic on college campuses. >> he doesn't want it to happen to anybody else ever again. >> reporter: more than half of college students are involved in some form of campus hazing. and studies show more than 250,000 students experience it when they try to join an athletic team. >> what be viewed as boys will be boys hazing can actually be a crime. and at the least can be something that can lead to a lawsuit. >> reporter: a string of recent cases show that hazing can become extreme and even deadly. >> is he breathing or is he not breathing? >> we don't know if he's breathing or not. but we need an ambulance asap. >> reporter: like the case of

robert champion a drum major at florida a&m university. >> reporter: investigators believe champion died after walking through a gauntlet of fists on a school charter bus, apparently pummeled to death following his team's game back in 2011. >> hazing was involved in the events that occurred prior to the 911 call for assistance. >> he wasn't responding. we thought he was breathing. he was making noises but i don't know if he's breathing now. >> is he awake? do you know? >> i'm, he's not responding. >> but is he breathing? >> i have no idea. i cannot tell you that. >> okay. well. >> he just threw up. >> pressure. >> reporter: less than a week ago, three of his fellow band members who had been convicted of manslaughter and hazing for the fatal beatings were

sentenced to ten years probation. the proceedings taped by a local fox station wofl. >> i am utterly and completely embarrassed and ashamed to have played any part or role in any event which resulted in robert's death. >> reporter: champion's parents hope their son's death can help spark change. >> we need to take responsibility and know what's going on in our schools. and not pass the blame let's take the initiative to fix the problem. let there and school where our kid can be safe and follow their dreams and don't have to come back in a body bag. >> reporter: but reform will not be easy. these traditions run deep on campuses all over america. >> it is not an understatement to say that i was afratd somebody could die. >> reporter: earlier this month, penn state student james avens yoe spoke up about what he said was extreme hazing at his

fraternity. >> hazing included things like forcing the pledges to perform exercises while drinking large quantities of liquor, and then the pledges would be required to drink from a ritual bucket which would include a mixture of ingredients, such as hot sauce, hard liquor, urine. >> reporter: he filed a lawsuit against both his former frats house and the university. >> when i saw what was going on and the abuse that myself and others were repeatedly experiencing and that the university was totally ignoring they left me no choice but to go to the police. >> reporter: penn state dismissed those claims telling abc news in a statement that while he did approach school officials in 2014 neither he nor his family were willing to file a complaint, provide documentation, speak with state college police or participate in pursuing the formal disciplinary process available to them.

the penn state chapter has been suspended for three years and the frat ousted 38 members after an internal investigation. >> by bringing this lawsuit, i'm hoping we can help end hazing at penn state and elsewhere. >> reporter: 44 states now have anti-hazing laws on the books. >> the increase of anti-hazing laws has made it much easier for plaintiffs to win these kinds of cases, they typically have to show that the conduct was either reckless or intentional. >> reporter: in the case of that swimmer at the university of virginia anthony mark antonio, the administration appears to have taken swift action. >> if we can do something to stop it or to make people have pause the next time, then anthony will be please bid that alone. >> reporter: falling the reported hazing the upper class men were suspended for the rest of that semester. none of them ever rejoined the team. two of them transferred to other schooling. mark antonio will attend

northwestern university this fall. >> he had to leave his high hopes of a wonderful education at one of the greatest institutions in america and to be on a very competitive swim team. went to hell. >> reporter: a spokesman for the accused swimmers tells abc news on behalf of all the defendants that they have not yet been served so can't couldn't on the suit adding these issues are not new. they were internallyvestigated by the university of virginia and handled appropriately. in a statement to abc news uva said that they promptly investigated allegations of hazing and took prompt action to provide support services to the affected students adding that they have since enhanced monitoring of team conduct. coming up here on "nightline." zoo lander is not the only one who is disillusioned. >> that a male model's life is a precious precious commodity. >> you'll meet a young man who

male models are not a terribly easy group of people to feel sorry for, but as you're about to see, many fresh faces find modeling to be a surprisingly unglamourous and unfavorable job. >> what we got going on today? >> reporter: the glamourous life of a male model. that's what 23-year-old cameron keyly gleamed of. >> it would be quick, easy money, you know i'd be making thousands upon thousands of dollars for not doing anything. >> reporter: he was branded a new face to watch by models.com. his look even getting snoop dogg's attention on instagram. he found himself $10,000 in debt and not making enough money to pay it off. >> i haven't made a single penny. i'm in debt all over the world

right now. but the only thing i've gained is life experience. >> reporter: this is from a man who dreamed of modeling an industry dominated by women. victoria's secret former ton model is the top earning model, earning $44 million. and right behind her is victoria's second angel, earning $8 while the highest-paid male model is making way less shawn o'bright only made 1.8 million. coming in at number two, the face of dolce gabbana making $1.4 million. the reason kate kraus tells us it's simple economics. >> the fashion industry is in high demand. there's much more catalogs. e commerce sites, websiting clothing companies, and i think that the female model has a bigger statsure than the male

model. >> reporter: the truth is life as a male model is far from a dream. i know, because i used to be one. as a teenager i was discovered near the beaches of rio. i went to brazil europe asia and finally new york city. there were plenty of struggles, believe me. but i was extremely lucky. but some are not. when cameron moved to new york, he moved to this apartment with other aspiring models. this place cost cameron $1200 a month. >> i was pretty happy with the models apartment. but then again i'm happy with a roof over my head and a warm place to sleep. >> reporter: he couldn't afford the rent so his agency picked up the bill. >> you're advancing their visa their accommodations their food money and giving them an allowance, so if the model doesn't start to work they then start to build up the debt within the first three months. their debt could be $8,000 to $20,000 easily. >> reporter: is your life here less glamour usoushan you expected it to be? >> i would have toyes,

because i had the misconceptions of the male modeling industry. >> reporter: he took us to where he grew up in this trailer park with his sisters and mom. six people. >> six people and five katzcats and a dog. it's still got the potholes in the same spots. it's crazy being back here. >> reporter: his life in new york is much different. cameron takes us to the place where did he a shoot for vogue italia. what was that phone call like? >> it honestly really blew my mind. i never would have expected to get a call like that. >> reporter: cameron was paid nothing at all from what was probably one of his biggest jobs ever. his agent tells us this is not unusual. >> cameron's now in the stage of his career where he's seen the biggest people in the industry. the biggest people in the industry have responded to him. and what we hope to do from that is the advertising.

>> reporter: to find the real money, you have to turn the page to ad campaigns where models can make up to $150,000 for one-day shoots. this is one of the few male models who have made it the current chase of calvin kline. what does that mean to be the face of one of the most iconic brands in the world? >> people at home say oh, you're modeling underwear? you see that everywhere. >> reporter: but he is everywhere. walking in their runway shows and on the biggest bill boards in new york city. not long ago, clark was just another student at the university of denver. fash last thing on his mind. then it all changed one day as he was walking around new york city. >> some guy just yells at me from across the street like hey, stop. runs through traffic. and he comes over and he's like are you a model? turns out he was a casting director for the men's shows for calvin kline. >> that's great, that's great. >> reporter: that same kind of look happened to 19 year old max

king while enjoying a music festival. >> what were you wearing? >> probably this. probably like shorts and a -- i don't dress that well you know. >> reporter: how surprised were you? >> i was fairly surprised to get approached. i never thought of myself as a model, you know what i mean? nothing i've been identify as. >> reporter: when you think of a model, what goes through your mind? the life of a model? >> this girl. >> reporter: max was discovered by kate kraus. she explains to us what she looks for. >> someone who's tall over 6 foot to 6'3". good features, good jaw line good hairline. good cheekbones. >> reporter: max might meet the criteria but kate says he still has to lose a little weight. as for cameron who wants to help his mom and save money, he moved back to georgia to live at home. >> when it coming to the money aspect i'm more so after the
