very much and can honor on this day, right? we do want to start with a series of concerns looming over the holiday including isis sharks and, of course the weather. across america we've got a mix of extreme heat, severe storms and plain old rain so will it put a damper on your celebration? let's kick things off with rob who is out this morning in central park. hi, rob. >> hi paula. it is independence day. we are celebrating that and the birth of this great country. and unlike any other holiday this one really depended on the weather because so many outdoor activities you have ball games, hot dog eating contest, trades fireworks dependent on the weather. check this out. a place where they had fireworks 365 days a year disney world, a natural light show happening there. frequent lightning across orlando and that may be the case as we go through today. where are we going to see the severe weather today? not a whole lot of really intense severe weather. but widespread area of seeing isolated thunderstorms. the heaviest will be across the

dakotas and parts of nebraska. the heavy rain across parts of northern mississippi, alabama where it's going to stay today and across those thunderstorms that develop later on today. your today forecast will feature a little rainfall across the northeast. not raining now in new york city. firestorms will fire across the southeast. most of the drier air moves into the northeast by the time the fireworks hit tonight and spotty across the southeast where the diceiest. so far in central park it is dry nobody firing up the grill just yet so i'll see you back inside in a few, dan. >> thank you. now to the story that broke overnight and speaks to another holiday concern, the safety of fireworks displays. an an explosion and many treated for injuries and abc's ryan smith did here with more. >> reporter: good morning. nothing says fourth of july like a fireworks display, the sparkling lights in the sky dazzling millions celebrating our country's birthday. in this case something went

horribly wrong. overnight an independence day fireworks celebration taking a frightening turn. >> oh my gosh. oh my god. >> reporter: thousands of spectators gathered for a fireworks display in avon, colorado friday night when suddenly fireworks shoot directly into the crowd. fireworks spraying on to shocked revelers. [ screaming ] >> reporter: nine onlookers hurt in the mishap. medics on the scene treating the injured for burns. >> oh my god. >> reporter: authorities still investigating the incident but this morning event organizers telling abc news a fireworks shell exploded inside its canister causing several others to tip over. >> oh my god. >> reporter: firing towards the unsuspecting crowd. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: instead of up in the sky. luckily the injuries in this case were minor.

event organizers told us they had several ambulances on the scene for situations like this. a good thing because with explosives like that could have been a lot worse. >> a lot worse, ryan thank you. appreciate it. >> all right, ryan thanks. even more urgent safety concern this holiday weekend, isis authorities are warning of an increased threat of terror attacks inspired by the islaming state and police in major cities are ratcheting up security. in los angeles officials say the threat has not been this high since 9/11. devin dwyer has more on these warnings from washington, d.c. good morning, devin. >> reporter: good morning, paula. expecting up to 700,000 people down here today on the national mall all of them going through security check independents like this one as authorities here across the country on their highest state of alert. it's a super bowl test for america's national security. celebrations in the nation's 239th birthday facing what some call the most serious threats since 2001. >> threat treatment is very high. in fact we don't think it's been this high since 9/11. >> reporter: l.a. to d.c. chicago and boston this morning

law enforcement is fully deployed. authorities citing no specific plot or threat. but concerned about isis and supporters possibly lurking inside the u.s. >> obviously a lone wolf is our worst nightmare but we have nothing to indicate we have any of that going on. >> reporter: the boston marathon continues. >> reporter: it was in boston where the marathon bombers originally planned to target the fourth of july. they struck early, authorities say, because the bombs were ready sooner. that attack and others in tunisia and france recently on the minds of tourists hitting the national mall. >> you just pray it doesn't happen. >> i see the police all over the place. >> reporter: in chicago police are working 12-hour shifts an extra 7,000 deployed on new york city on the ground, in the air and on the water around ground zero. here in washington tourists navigating a security maze but authorities say the best defense our sixth sense. >> if you believe something is

wrong or the hair stands up on the back of your neck don't feel ashamed or embarrassed to reach out to a member of law enforcement that is in the area to let them know, hey, please check this. >> reporter: an important reminder if you see something today say something. that's what that 911 caller did out at navy yard earlier this week. thought she had gunfire. turned out to be a false alarm but that's exactly what you should do dan. >> devin, thank you. we move to the safety issue at the beach. sharks. millions of americans are planning to head to the water in the midst of a truly remarkable string of shark attacks and look at this video. beachgoers reeling in a shark in north carolina and that is where we find abc's phillip mena who is in nags head north carolina. phillip, good morning to you. >> dan, good morning. the beaches here are open on this fourth of july despite nearly daily encounters with sharks on the carolina coast. sharks lurking in the water on this busy holiday high on everyone's mind. this morning, beachgoers on high

alert. a five-foot shark swimming just offshore caught on camera in south carolina. this new video adding to the alarming number of encounters with sharks on the east coast. in kill devil hills fishermen hooking and dragging this six-foot-long shark to shore. >> it was the biggest shark that i've ever seen in person and was quite scary art anna corpsman on vacation filming the scene. >> that's kept me out of the water for the rest of the day. >> reporter: posted shark warnings greeting visitors on both coasts. the signs in california discouraging swimming following a series of great white sightings and advisories posting along carolina beaches in the wake of 11 attacks this year. suggesting swimmers avoid bright colors stay in groups and stay close to shore. while some experts believe that fishing too close to shore could lead to scenes like this one in florida, bait possibly luring sharks closer to the beach with

disastrous effects contributing to the recent increase in attacks including patrick thornton who was bitten while protecting his son just offshore at avon beach. >> it took a pretty big chunk out of my right leg so i started punching the shark and then it grabbed my back. >> reporter: already this morning, you can see people fishing out on the pier. so far not too many people here on the beach but it is early on this holiday and beaches are expected to be packed. paula. >> all right, phillip, thank you. there is outrage across the country after a terrifying attack at a popular tourist attraction in san francisco. it left a young woman dead. murdered right in front of her father. officials believe that it was a random act, the suspect is a convicted felon and undocumented immigrant who some say should have never been back on the streets. we get more on this from aditi roy. good morning, aditi. >> reporter: good morning, paula. a really sad story here in san francisco. the suspected shooter remains

here at the county jail this morning as questions swirl about why he was free on the streets in the first place. >> i had the best sister. >> reporter: this morning friends and family of 32-year-olds kathryn steinle grieving her loss asking what more could have been done to prevent her death in her father's arms at one of san francisco's most popular tourist spots. >> i could feel she was fighting grasping for every breath and i wouldn't expect anything less from her. >> reporter: according to police 45-year-old francis so sanchez has confessed to steinle's murder. >> i don't know that i can forgive him right now. >> reporter: sanchez a mexican national here illegally is a convicted felon with a violent past. federal authorities say he has been deported five times and should have been behind bars in evacuate in instead of free to kill her in broad daylight wednesday. >> we got one victim gunshot wound to the back.

>> reporter: customs enforcement saying after sanchez was released from prison in march their officers handed him over to local law enforcement for outstanding drug charges with one request, if he were to be released again. i.c.e. officers be notified. after the drug charges were dropped they had no legal basis to held him without a court order. >> we have a city law, city ordinance which makes it very clear that we don't turn people over to i.c.e. >> reporter: that policy now being questioned. immigration authorities saying the refusal to detain sanchez illustrates the importance of jurisdictions working with i.c.e. in order to avoid needless tragedy in their communities. >> i'll never get to tell my sister that i love her again. >> reporter: as sanchez remains behind bars at the county jail this morning, san francisco police say they're stepping up security patrols at the embarcadero this holiday weekend. >> aditi, thank you. such a tough story and so many questions so let's bring in

former fbi profiler brad garrett. brad we've got i.c.e. and the san francisco pd pointing fingers at one another. do you have a sense of who is actually in the wrong here or are they both in the wrong possibly? >> well i think what you've got, dan, is two organizations that have, you know, they have a different mission. i don't think it's a matter of miscommunication as this particular person just noted on camera, they have an ordinance in san francisco not to enforce i.c.e. or immigration warrants. so, you know naturally driven by a number of reasons so i think they chose not to do it and let him go and unfortunately we've had this horrible tragedy. >> what's the rationale behind this law that prevents the law enforcement officials in san francisco of notifying i.c.e. or turning somebody over to i.c.e.? >> because, dan, immigration laws are a big rub particularly in ethnically diverse communities obviously like san francisco and so the police want

to separate themselves from doing immigration enforcement because it causes such consternation in various communities within san francisco. they are there to build a relationship with the community, not keep it in fear and that's really the big issue here. >> whoever is right, one woman is dead and there are a lot of questions being asked this morning. brad garrett, we appreciate your guidance on this saturday morning. thank you very much and now we'll toss it over to ron. >> good morning, dan, paula, saar ra good morning everyone. we begin with a deadly helicopter crash in colorado. flames engulfing the medical chopper after it crashed into two cars outside of a hospital in frisco colorado. witnesses say the helicopter spun out of control shortly after takeoff and plunged to the ground bursting into flames. the pilot was killed. a flight paramedic and nurse pulled from the burning wreckage are in serious condition. both of them investigation is under way. and in orange texas, an alligator kills a man during a late night swim at a marina.

the 28-year-old man and a female companion ignored this sign when they jumped into the water early friday morning. the young man's body was found almost two miles up pstream. this comes days after a father and son were attacked on a lake near houston. new outrage in baltimore. this time over a sign inside of a police van reading enjoy your ride cuz we sure will. baltimore police are investigating how it got there and freddie gray suffered severe spinal injuries after being transported inside a police van. he later died and six baltimore police officers are charged in connection with his death. terrifying moments in florida when dozens of people were stranded on a ferris wheel for three hours. i wouldn't like that. 66 riders were on the 400-foot-high orlando eye when it stopped moving. rescue crews were able to get everyone off the ride safely.

new york yankees slugger alex rodriguez has been reunited with a baseball that he hit for a home run two weeks ago for hit number 3,000. zack hample the fan who caught the ball handed it over in exchange for $150,000 donation not by a-rod but by the team to hample's favorite charity which provides baseball equipment to kids. finally after a rife rod got that milestone baseball back he and the yankees took the field against the rays. check out what happens late in the game. a pigeon darting across the field straight at rays outfielder kevin kiermaier. he duck not hit by the pigeon. he was okay. but -- >> he acts like he's been struck by lightning. >> yeah he stayed on the ground a long time afterward. the pigeon landed and kept -- >> the pigeon was found. >> hbp, hit by pitch when

everyone knows it should be hit by pigeon. >> never witnessed that. >> it happens frequently. >> the most credit louse person. >> i just believed. it was like something we'd cover in "pop news." but now to the big soccer showdown happening tomorrow in canada. the u.s. preparing to take on japan in the women's world cup final. it's a rematch of the last world cup final four years ago, of course this year the u.s. team is hoping for a different outcome. abc's jesse palmer is in vancouver where the grudge match will go down. good morning, jesse. >> reporter: good morning, sara. you know both of these teams know each other so well. japan, of course winning the 2011 dramatic final and the united states rebounding the next year at the summer olympics in london but you ask anybody on this u.s. squad what the motivation is tomorrow night and it's simple. it is the 2011 finals loss that they remember the most. >> all: i believe that we will win. >> reporter: team usa is ready for battle.

first the family is praying for good news after a woman from texas went on vacation and never came back. >> amanda waller was enjoying a snorkeling strip off curacao. she never made it back to shore and kendis gibson has more on the efforts to find her. good morning, kendis. >> reporter: paula and dan, good morning. yeah this really was supposed to be a fun trip. up to 25 friends from texas vacationing together and two days into the trip something mysterious took place. this morning, lost in paradise a houston couple on a dream caribbean vacation with friends when it was suddenly cut short. >> this was just a vacation for family and friends, we take annually every summer, chose curacao because we heard the diving and the beaches were beautiful. >> reporter: that tropical setting turned to trouble a week ago thursday. 29-year-old amanda waller went snorkeling with friends and how separated from her group on the way back to shore. >> she signaled that she was going back to shore but no one

ever saw her come ashore either now her husband allan talking exclusionly with ktrk saying he was diving farther out to sea with friends when waller finished. >> i surfaced from a dive. i was doing with my best friend they already had begun a search for her. >> reporter: for several days dozens of volunteers and the coast guard searched the southern caribbean waters for waller to no avail. the family raising nearly $14,000 on a crowd funding site for the search. >> we're hoping of course that she's found alive. but in either way i think her family deserves closure with knowing exactly what happened to her. >> reporter: for her husband back at home in houston, there are still more questions than answers about what really happened to amanda waller. >> i don't want to speculate on what i believe happened. i just have faith that she's in god's hands now. >> and this morning police on that small island off venezuela do not suspect foul play but
