been honored this time. >> renaming it the canyon of heroines this morning and confetti to tons will rain down on team usa this morning. >> it's going to be a great morning. a lot more but we'll begin with that severe weather overnight. storms hitting 30 million americans, two tornadoes touch down. that school in hamburg, pennsylvania completely destroyed. abc's gio benitez is on the scene. good morning, gio. >> reporter: george good morning to you. just take a look behind me. this school completely destroyed as you said. these thick brick walls torn apart. take a look. this here is the kindergarten class. you can still see the schoolbooks just scattered everywhere. incredibly the principal was inside at the time. overnight, a tornado taking aim at pennsylvania. at blue mountain academy in hamburg this is what's left after a possible tornado tore through and leveled it. winds up to 60 miles per hour ripping the roof right off this classroom. normally filled with kindergartners. part of that roof even ending up in that tree.

the school's principal was inside when the roof went flying. >> i was thinking we don't have a ceiling light in the school. why am i seeing daylight? >> reporter: first responders on the scene minutes after the destruction. thankfully, no major injuries. in the midwest winds picking up a barn and tossing it across this parking lot in arkansas. damaging a number of cars. and in indiana -- >> i lost everything. >> reporter: residents trying to salvage what they can. neighborhoods submerged. in colorado a tarp goes flying as groundsmen try to cover the field in the pouring rain during last night's rockies/braves game. after all that rain people using rafts to navigate their way through those streets. and back here live in hamburg where all of this destruction still is we can tell you that principal incredibly is doing well this morning. she was actually able to crawl out through all of this debris robin. >> amazing, glad she's doing

well. gio, thank you. almost a hundred reports of severe weather on thursday and more dangerous flooding and damaging wind is in the forecast this morning, ginger. >> the video of that pennsylvania tornado quickly, though clearly shows a tornado but we won't have confirmation until the national weather service gets out there later today and then we'll get the update. for today though this afternoon and evening two pockets from kansas city to celina paducah, louisville lexington, mostly damaging wind but especially back here you could see a little isolated tornado along the warm front. a flash flood threat i'll talk a whole lot more about going through the rest of the morning and early afternoon but i'll have much more coming in your nation's weather. >> we have new details now about the terror threat surrounding the july 4th holiday. fbi director james comey revealing agents disrupted several active plots to kill americans showing why officials were so on edge. abc's pierre thomas spoke with the director. go >> reporter: good morning, george. the fbi director believes lives were saved, plans to kill

americans stopped in connection with the july 4th holiday. fbi director james comey told reporters in an off-camera briefing thursday about a dozen alleged isis sympathizers were arrested in the weeks leading up to july 4th some apparently with deadly intentions "i do believe that our work disrupted efforts to kill people likely in connection with july 4." "we made the arrests to thwart what they were up to." he said they were inspired and directed by an unprecedented social media campaign by isis encouraging them to commit mass murder. >> kill somebody where you are. kill somebody in uniform. kill anybody if you can cut their head off, great, videotape it. do it, do it do it. >> reporter: he confirmed a recent spate of isis-related arrests before independence day were part of a broad campaign aimed at disrupting suspected homegrown radicals. he declined to identify specific july 4th plots but a number of the fbi recent arrests were disclosed to the public. among them this college student

from queens accused of casing the george washington bridge and the fbi says when agents searched his apartment, they found plans for a pressure cooker bomb like the ones used in the boston marathon attacks. in the last few days the fbi director has been going out of his way to sound the alarm that he's in the midst of an ongoing battle with isis every day, george. >> yeah, he's so worried about those encrypted phone calls and at the same time we got word over the last couple of days pierre of this massive data breach. much bigger than we thought of the government personnel computers. more than 20 million people affected and now you have members of congress calling for the head of the office of personnel management to be fired. >> reporter: exactly. john boehner, the speak of the house is calling for the head of opm to go. so far she is saying she won't. the breach is epic. five times bigger than we were initially told. huge in its national security implications. the hackers got the files of millions of u.s. workers.

much details background information like this. these files are for more than 100 pages and has detailed information. the fbi director is one of those affected. information where he lived, his family the jobs he held all that is in there. he said the hackers got a treasure trove of information, george. >> yeah he was very emotional when he talked about that. okay pierre thanks very much. >> he certainly was. as you know it's an important day in south carolina. the confederate flag is coming down from the statehouse grounds. governor nikki haley signing the law to remove it surrounded by family members from the victims of the mother emanuel church shootings. abc's steve osunsami is at the capitol in columbia south carolina, for us this morning. good morning steve. >> reporter: good morning, robin. this is expected to be a ceremony that pays respect to southern heritage and to the many family was are disappointed by this flag's removal.

this morning, the end of a decades long fight over the confederate battle flag the flag coming down the flagpole removed. outside in the 100-degree heat some are coming to celebrate. ot >> i'm not racist prejudice, you know it's a heritage thing. >> reporter: south carolina's governor is celebrating signing rsday to take down the flag surrounded by families of the nine killed at a bible study last month in what police are calling a hate crime. >> these nine pens are going to each of the nine families of the emanuel nine. >> reporter: the family's state short who helped lead the effort says this wouldn't have happened without their loss. >> sometimes it takes a horrific depiction for us to really grasp the gravity of the situation. >> reporter: state officials report that lawmakers are getting death threats. jenny horn the descendant of jefferson davis the confederate president and pushed for taking down the flag. >> it's a symbol of hate. >> i have a great deal of respect for my ancestors.

i honor my parents but my legacy is what i do while i'm here. >> reporter: now. >> here and now. >> reporter: in washington democrats trying to seize the moment are pushing to remove any emblem that has a portion of the confederate battle flag from the capitol. the issue has been referred to committee. in south carolina the ncaa says the state can bid for college tournament games and championships. a part of a deal worked out with lawmakers is for its removal. >> when the flag cops down you can see it happen live right here on abc later this morning. >> about 10:00 a.m. eastern time. we have health news a new alert about pain relieves so many use. the fda beefing up the warning labels on drugs like advil, motrin, aleve for increased risk to heart attack and stroke. jen, the change on the labels is pretty subtle but important. >> absolutely. we're talking about a huge class of medications here nsaids non

southern california the trouble started late wednesday. experts say no word to say whether they're part of a businesser one to come. another deadline passed for the u.s. and other world powers negotiating a nuclear deal with iran. secretary of state john kerry is threatening to walk away from the talks if conditions are not met. iran meanwhile accuses the u.s. and europe of backtracking on their commitments. a remarkable apology from pope francis. while visiting bolivia he asked for forgiveness for the, quote, grave sins committed by the church against indigenous people during the colonization of the americas. on a lighter note check out this picture. this is the where the low maintenance pope changed his clothes for mass at a local burger king. look at these pictures out of indonesia, a volcano there roaring to life spewing lava and ash into the air forcing some airlines to cancel flights. thousands of tourists are now stranded in bali. back in this country a

camera was rolling as firefighters rushed into a burring home in arkansas. they were caught in a backdraft explosion. you can see debris raining down on the lawn and fire truck. the firefighters and the mom and baby who were inside that home they all escaped without injuries. and finally here a new healthy snack from kfc. behold the cheatsah. a chicken cruz. buzzfeed has declared it has all the strengths of a regular pizza but none of the weaknesses. for now it is only available in the philippines which may be good because doctors believe you can get heartburn just by looking at then. i just made that up. >> zero calories. >> not zero calories. some haters on the internet pointed out it is just a chicken parliament with pay have toppings on top. i say, no it's a culinary revolution. >> there's one here in the u.s. with hot dogs as the crust. >> yes. it's close enough. >> a little less healthy.

>> it's all sort of levels of defibrillators. >> you got that right, dan. thank you. to a new potential danger at the beach. we've heard so much about shark encounters but now the portuguese man o war is showing up in increasing numbers. their sting is incredibly painful and can even be deadly. abc's phillip mena is in brighton beach, new york with that. good morning, phillip. >> reporter: robin, good morning. shark attacks have been in the headlines all summer but now there's a new threat in the water. a floating deadly. in record numbers they're washing up on eastern shores stinging unsuspecting swimmers with their venomous tentacles. >> felt like a thousand bees stinging me at once. >> reporter: it's called the portuguese man o war and it's something 7-year-old michael shantz and his mother won't soon forget. >> he was screaming, screaming. a lot of pain. >> reporter: over the past three

weeks, more than 30 of these jellyfish-like creatures reportedly spotted on beaches from delaware to new york at least three children reportedly stung off long island shores just this week. close encounters turing painful after many beachgoers mistake them for plastic bags. nicknamed floating death they typically float on the surface and tentacles can grow up to 30 feet long and stingers can pack a punch more painful than your average jellyfish in rare cases causing dangerous allergic reactions and even death. >> they can really hurt and probably kill a kid. it could put them into anna florida fattic shock. >> reporter: warm otherwises and strong wind seem to be pushing them closer to eastern beaches in record numbers but experts warn to stay away, even if they're not moving. >> if they're on the beach, tell the lifeguard don't touch.

they can sting even when they're dead. >> if you are stung, experts say use a towel to remove the stinger and use seawater to rinse it off but do not rub it. if you start to feel sick get medical help immediately. george. >> okay phillip boy, there's scary looking creatures right there. we switch gears to a big day in the world of sports. serena williams on the verge of history after her 17th trait win over maria sharapova at wimbledon. lara saw it all up close. let's talk to her now, hey, lara. >> hi george. yes, next up for her muguruza garbine muguruza is only 21 years old but do not count that one out. she delivered a drubbing to serena at the french open last year. so that's going to be a very interesting final but today it's all about the men. the men semifinals first up richard gasquet versus novak djokovic but the match that everybody is talking about, perhaps bigger than the finals will be andy murray versus roger federer and this crowd is flit.

history one more time. the floats are being built and the confetti gathered for team usa's epic ticker tape parade this morning. the u.s. women's soccer team making history once more. while new york has hosted 205 of these parades since 1886 this will be the first women's team ever to get a ride down new york city's famed canyon of heroes. starting in downtown manhattan the team will make their way up broadway ending at new york city's hall where the mayor will address them and their crowd of adoring fans. the parade costing $2 million is expected to draw huge crowds. this capping off a week of celebrations for the u.s. women's soccer team following their world cup win against japan on sunday. >> i believe that we just won. >> reporter: president obama congratulating the team over the phone. >> couldn't be prouder of everybody here. >> reporter: and thousands turning out for a rally in los

>> you fit it all in. we are going to meet don't worry, you'll meet every member of that history-making team talking about it and what it takes to be a champion. >> we'll begin with that dramatic rescue of the three sisters missing for days in the wyoming wilderness spotted thursday after a massive search flown to safety reunited with their father. abc's clayton sandell is in jackson hole with the story. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. all three sisters are safe this morning after a dramatic rescue that owes it all to one chance encounter. this morning, three sisters missing on a camping trip that began 11 days ago smiling after reuniting with their dad. a helicopter rescuing megan andrews-sharer and her younger sisters, erin and kelsi thursday in the wyoming wilderness seven miles from where their car was. their dad said they got lost but did everything else right. >> they hung out in one spot.

they stayed close together. they didn't try to do anything that you wouldn't want skilled hikers to do. >> reporter: but the trio might still be lost if not for nate suitor and colton cook clearing trails in a remote part of the back country when they saw someone who seemed out of place on a distant ridge. >> it was a tall figure skinny. had i looked up 30 seconds later she would have been gone. >> reporter: when they later found out about the search they called to give rescuers the exact coordinates. sisters were located 20 minutes later. how does it feel providing that critical piece of the puzzle. >> nice knowing that helping someone out especially in a situation like that. >> reporter: the women ran low on food were cold and tired but otherwise are fine. >> i was relieved. i started to cry like you would as a parent losing all your kids at once is not an easy thing. >> reporter: their family and the rescue team relieved knowing in wilderness like this it's not always a happy ending. >> there was a lot of high-fives going on and it's one of those things where the culmination of a successful rescue is

child pornography charges stemming from a sexting incident at their massachusetts high school. police say in march the six suspects all between 15 and 17 years old allegedly circulated a photo of an underage female student. one of the students then allegedly blackmailing the victim sending her text messages threatening to release the photos unless she had sex with him in a school classroom. one text reading "how many people would enjoy seeing it. another "i got way more of these pics. can i put them online? authorities opened an investigation. seizing several cell phones andl computers. after the victim's mother who does not want to reveal her identity to protect her daughter spoke out. >> they would expose her to everybody in school. she just lived the last five months in fear. >> reporter: those teens are now likely to face felony charges. police filing criminal complaints against them thursday. the school district wouldn't comment on the investigation or whether the teens would face

additional consequences when they return to school. >> i don't think they're going to see the realm of damage they've done until they become adults. >> reporter: for "good morning america," linsey davis, abc news, new york. linsey, thank you. a close call for two thrill seekers at an amusement part in wisconsin. moments after this boy and his friend were buckled into a ride called the catapult look at that the bungee cord suddenly snapped slamming down with such force that it actually punctured a hole in the concrete. the boy's stunned father was behind the camera at the time. he says he's relieved the ride malfunctioned before it left the ground. finally here, when you go on safari in africa you're of course, hoping for some close encount stories with animals but not this close. check out what happened to these tourists in kenya. their vehicle swarmed by cheetahs. and then one of them actually jumped in the backseat. look at the face of this irish tourist. it pretty much says it all. excuse me.
