center, sunshine now. warm and humid but not terribly warm. let's get to it to show you doppler radars. where the storms are now. not many left. heaviest is on the eastern shore of maryland pushing toward the denton area. shower moving southeast of bowie to central section of anne arundel county or davisonville. there are a lot of showers and storms farther southwest in virginia but they will continue the trek to richmond. a quiet night. maybe haze and fog. not terribly warm. upper 70's to the lower 80's. it's comfortable. a little on the muggy side. we will drop between 69 and 75. there could be patches of fog. we think isolated storms are going to be south of washington-metro. otherwise partly sunny and humid weather went look ahead to the weekend in a few minutes. leon: you got it. to the remarkable story of a military veteran out of the elements tonight for the first

time in a week. this afternoon the prince george's county rescuers freed larry shaddy from underneath a fallen tree in springdale on ardwick-ardmore road. he play been there since being reported missing a week ago. they suspect that shaddy tripped while out walking along the road and he may have fallen down a 20-foot embank. they are hoping to learn more about what happened as he recovers. the boy scout of america on cusp of one of the biggest shift in the organization 100-year history. sometime in the coming hours the scouting leaders will vote to remove a ban on gay scout leaders but this comes with a catch. suzanne kennedy in the satellite center with the catch. reaction from some of those leading the charge for change. suzanne: there is no word when the 80 member executive board will vote.

but a vote indicates it will change tonight. the vote will change an organization in a way some thought would never happen. stephen achievedded the rank of eagle scout when he was 17. only to relinquish his award in 2013 when the scouts decided to permit participation by gay youths but not adults. >> previously the ban was contradictory indicating it was okay until you were 18. suzanne: they have seen long-term decline in membership as they struggle to navigate gay members and leaders. tracy and oliver's son was the first openly gay eagle scout and see the change in policy as long overdue and one they hope to attract perspective families. >> i see a lot of families reengaging now that they have confidence there is integrity between the scout policy and the scouts. >> they are taught to be honest and trustworthy. you are taught to be generous and caring.

discrimination is none of those things. suzanne: with the decision looming the area residents are reacting to the change. >> your sexuality shouldn't matter. >> they qualify, why not? >> it doesn't matter. you are what you do.ong as you are a good person. suzanne: if passed the resolution would allow the local scout units chartered to religious organizations to set the own policy and perhaps continue to ban gay leaders. live in satellite center suzanne kennedy, abc7 news. leon: abc7 will monitor the story throughout the evening and bring you the votes immediately on wjla.com. we will get reaction tonight at 11:00. in an exclusive interview the mother of a man accused of attacking a couple inside a church said she feared with her own life. abc7 spoke to kim's mother on the condition we don't identify her. her son is accused of killing a man inside a prayer church and seriously injuring his

wife. the mother told us her son has a history of mental illness. he turned to the prayer center and when he confessed he thought of stabbing a dog and taking his own life. >> the police came. he was angry. he said he doesn't like to live in america. he likes europe. and saying all this nonsense about, you know, statements. that is the reason of my experience. yes, i had moments, fear. being with him. maureen: in -- leon: kim told them in charging documents he was tired of being ris respect -- disrecollected by koreans. two weeks ago we showed you a problem plaguing northern d.c. park that some refer to the park as "zombie park" in a reference of people seen high

leon: donald trump's comments questioning john mccain's hero status isn't hurting his popularity. a new cnn orc poll shows trump leading the republican fie with support from 18% of republicans. it's up from 12% last month. that has him overtaking jeb bush two weeks ahead of the first primary debate. presidential candidate mike huckabee doubled down on a controversial comment he made about the iran nuclear deal. today he defended himself saying it takes the israelis to the door of the oven reference to holocaust. the defamation league called the comments unacceptable. others said it was over the top and harsh. when asked about the comment in the visits to ath opennia president obama -- to ethiopia, president obama said it was sad. president obama: maybe it was an effort to push mr. trump out of the headlines but it's not the kind of leadership that is needed for america

right now. leon: in a joint news conference, the president urged the leader to encourage free speech and human rights. it's the first ever trip by a sitting president. he attended a state dinner and talked about terrorism in a meeting with the african union. human rights groups are upset about a report on human trafficking. they removed cuba and malaysia from the worst offender categories. the anti-trafficking activists and 200 member of congress say they were upgraded because of growing economic ties with the u.s.. five countries including south sudan belize and belarus were moved to the worst offender category. up next on "abc7 news at 6:00" -- saved from certain death. we take you inside the flames as the firefighter rescued two doings from a burning home. after an afternoon of storms what to expect from nightfall? chief meteorologist doug hill has the word on that and what to expect this weekend. lou: i'm lou holder.

leon: vandals struck a mont meant of men killed fighting for the confederacy in the civil war. the spray paint included a message. kevin lewis explains. >> i can't believe somebody did that. kevin: this is the talk of the down. the words "black lives matter" sprayed on the base of a monument dedicated to confederate soldiers. this weeks after montgomery county executive ordered the statue be taken down. >> i'm disgusted. kevin: peggy says you can't erase or de-face antiquity. >> they are taking down all the statues. they are taking the flags down. what are they going to do next? tear up gettysburg? get rid of everything that the civil war was about? it is part of history. kevin: yet others consider

this red and black paint symbol of free speech. >> i think people are taking stands for what they believe in and starting a conversation that needs to be had for the betterment of my generation and generations to come. kevin: rockville police say the 102-year-old monument had been vandalism free until now. the investigation is fresh. j i am -- >> i am sure spray painting public buildings would elicit a lively topic on any topic but that is not the democratic way. ultimately someone got their say but at the expense of the montgomery county taxpayer who has to clean this up. kevin: in rockville, i'm kevin lewis abc7 news. leon: a statement, montgomery county executive called it despicable and said those responsible will be brought to justice and the monument will be restored. a slower than normal commute

for drivers along king street in alexandria tonight. the far westbound lane is closed as the crews finished repair on water main. the water stopped gushing hours ago. repairs continue. water service was not disrupted. new develop in the the harper's ferry fire. the west virginia state fire marshal said thursday's fire caused $2 million in damage. it destroyed four buildings and housed eight businesses and several apartments. town leaders met in private to discuss recovery efforts. the cause is still not yet known. a helmet camera captured firefighters' efforts to save several dogs. take a look. is that amazing or what? that is a day at work for the

firefighters. helmet cam attached to a cr member responded to a house member sunday in fairfax. no one was home at the time. but firefighters rescued two of the family's three dogs. one of the dogs died in the fire. a second one from complications. but a third one did survive. the cause of the fire is not known. that gives you some perspective to do what it is like to do what they do. for sure. you handled yourself tonight. doug: these were storms that came through. that was the issue. flash flood warning. storm moving 5 miles per hour. be now we're good to go. let's start with a time lapse. this is what we found on the weather bug system today. washington lee high school from up the road in arlington. we started a loop around 3:00. you will see the clouds gath ir the skies darken. high winds. torrential rain. that fast sunshine. that is the way it looks now. beautiful, 81 degrees. mostly sunny skies.

on almanac page, 90 and 73. the lie and low. the average is 88 and 71. so a little above. we will stay 90ish, low 90's for the most part for a week or so. we settle in the heart of the summer season. it's 88 in fredericksburg. 82 in winchester. as far as the doppler, metro area. not much. a little shower. so nothing west. now that is that. the eastern shore a few storms. but stand down a bit. most of the activity is farther south and southwest in virginia. a little frontal system that is settling down in day. triggering a slow moving shower or storm. it's pushing this way. what we find in the next couple of days is that the winds will build out of the south. that is going to increase the temperature and the moisture.

as far as the storm chances through tomorrow i suppose there could be isolated thunderstorm. best chance that would be south, well south of the metro area. wake-up temperatures 69 and 76 degrees. the future cast by the clouds moving coming out of the southeast. fog and clouds in the morning. isolated shower or storm in the afternoon. by wednesday, haze and fog in the morning. morning hours will be really return to the humidity levels starting to increase. we expect the temperatures to climb in the 90's. 94 by wednesday. 92 tomorrow. 94 and 94. maybe thunderstorms by the time we roll into thursday. another frontal system is heading our way. but again that system is just going to have scattered showers. only put probability at 40% for thunderstorms. saturday, sunday, monday in the 90's. the heat and the humidity in a

lou: let's make things perfectly clear. number one. robert griffin iii is not the main reason that the team only won seven games in two seasons. number two -- well number one doesn't matter. number ten is and will be on a short leash to get the franchise back to the postseason. a few days before camp attending a taps vent, tragedy assistance program for survivors whose mission is to help military families who lost loved ones to battle or service. his mission this upcoming season, prove the naysayers wrong. robert: i think we will be as good as we want to be. i feel like the outside doesn't believe in us don't expect anything from us.
