it's tuesday, july 28th. from abc news this is "world news now." with t.j. holmes and reena ninan. >> good morning to you all. the west is burning. that's where we need to start the battle against these wildfires out there. heat and wind causing all kinds of problems with these flames and causing problems with the firefighters out there. >> that's right. this morning, 23 significant wildfires burning in five states in california conditions so dry, the heat alone can spark new trouble. abc's matt gutman is right there. >> reporter: an onslaught from the air, and the ground. those flames fueled by heat and 30-mile-per-hour winds proving too much for four firefighters badly burned when the fire overran them. undaunted, brigades of firefighters continue to troop up the sierra nevadas to battle the lowell fire.

hundreds evacuated with the fire only 20% contained. the willow fire near fresno also breathing flames torching more than 1500 acres and forcing the evacuations of people from 450 homes. 23 significant wildfires lighting up the west. >> authorities tell us those fires were mostly started by lightning but this one may have been started by a car's exhaust. that heat about 150 degrees can ignite grass like this. back in grass valley, we caught up to logan tony in his tractor. i see you've cut a bunch of trees down. how many have you felled? >> about 70. >> reporter: 70 trees? hacking down his livelihood to save his home. those helicopters buzzing have been dumping a tremendous amount of water on that fire. the goal is to prevent it from creeping up this hill and keep it contained. matt gutman abc news grass valley california. there's no break for western firefighters with hot weather and gusty winds.

>> from the midwest to the northeast, heat indexes heating triple digits. minneapolis sweltering. justin pavek with the outlook for us. good morning to you. >> thanks and good morning to you. heat continuing to affect much of the northeast over the course of the next couple days. in fact, an all-out heat wave on the way. many spots well into the 90s each afternoon through thursday temperatures getting into the mid 100s especially from new york city south and west. boston could feel into the upper 90s. not expecting a lot of wet weather here the next couple days, but there will be gusty thunderstorms later on this afternoon into the upper midwest, eventually getting into the western great lakes, as well. damaging winds and hail the big threats. dealing with more dry conditions. not good news for fire danger here in northern california where temperatures will be quite hot and there could be some gusty winds, as well. t.j. and reena back over to you. >> thank you so much. breaking an awful news out of northern california now. an end to the search for a

missing 8-year-old girl. police in santa cruz say they've found the body of madyson middleton last seen roo riding her scooter outside her mother's apartment complex. the police chief provides details of the discovery at a late night's news conference. >> this is extraordinarily heart breaking news i'm about to give to you. our detectives discovered the body of a young female inside of a dumpster at the complex located behind me. >> the police chief says a 15-year-old boy who lived at the apartment complex is now being questioned in connection with the murder. well the search is continuing through the night for two 14-year-old boys who wentmying during a fishing trip off florida. coast guard says the water's relatively warm and the teens could likely survive about five days hanging on to a cooler or wearing life jackets. perry cohen and austin steven knows were last seen friday when their capsize boatas found

charging documents describe that hebert said he was as a dibbled and that he couldn't walk properly and had no income. in all it alleges hebert took in $44,000ed in social security and medicaid benefits between 2010 and 2013. >> $375. >> reporter: tv's spotlight has burned other people, too. when kathy showed up on the price rate right, despite claiming 3g grabbed a month for a shoulder injury boy did she spin that wheel. she pleaded guilty to the fraud. former nfl lineman brad culpepper sued his insurance company after they saw him dominating challenges on "survivor." culpepper maintains he suffers long-term physical injuries and did nothing wrong. hebert's attorney says his client is innocent. neal karlinksky, abc news seattle. so the thing is in his application in 2009 he said he couldn't walk.
