from abc news, this is "world news now." happy friday, everyone. i'm reena ninan. >> and i'm phillip mena. congrats making it to friday on the cusp of the weekend. >> i don't eat hot dogs but you're looking forward to the hot dogs. >> i haven't eat in hours waiting for this. can't wait. we begin this afternoon -- this afternoon? we begin -- almost. already looking forward to it. this morning with those firefighters killed in washington state. a silent procession of emergency vehicles rolled through the town of twisp, washington, late yesterday honoring the three men who died wednesday. >> they were part of a special unit that goes into dangerous areas to scout the wildfire situation. that's what they were doing when they died. here's more everywhere abc's lauren lister. >> crews face fast moving winds and worsening conditions as they continue to battle a wildfire raging in central washington. the blaze turned deadly near the

town of trips. >> it hurts deep. but the job goes on. >> three firefighters including 20-year-oldia tom by chef ski were killed when their vehicle crashed and they were overtaken by flames. >> he was the center of our lives. >> we're going to miss him more than anything in the whole world. >> four more were injuried with 25-year-old daniel lyon suffering critical burns and flown to a hospital in seattle and now fighting for his life surrounded by family. >> this was his first season as a firefighter. he's the kind of kid that his mother and i are and family are so proud of. >> a female firefighter was pulled off the front lines after learning her own husband was among the seven victims. in california, fires have forced evacuations of national parks. east of oakland, billowing smoke could be seen for miles and air tankers are being used to help try to contain the blaze.

in eastern oregon, three dozen homes were destroyed including carolyn hodges. >> obviously, we're going to have to find a place to live for probably a couple years. >> reporter: the heat and drought in western states are making this fire season one of the most explosive in recent years. right now, close to 29,000 firefighters are fighting about 100 large fires. lauren lister, abc news, los angeles. >> thank you. flash flooding is possible today from washington, d.c. up to boston. things were pretty wet already last night in the small town of bel air, maryland where up to 6 inches of rain fell. cars were caught on flooded streets. rescue crews pulled 1 people safely from their vehicles. no one was injured and there were no reports of serious damage. the storm system could make a mess out of the morning commute for millions in the northeast. >> as town bowers fall on philadelphia, new york and new england. accuweather's justin pavek is following it all. >> thanks and good morning to

you. on this friday continuing into the start of the weekend, we're concerned about drenching downpours along the interstate 95 corridor. more specifically new york city to hartford to boston where there could be flash flooding. but to the west, we're in good shape with lots of sunshine and low humidity. that's bad news in the northwest. we need the rain. unfortunately here we're concerned about more extreme fire danger. >> thank you. 1 soldiers are recovering after being struck by lightning during a training exercise at fort bragg. the strike hit the ground about 20 feet away from where the soldiers from the 82nd airborne were standing wednesday night. eight were treated and released. the other ten went to the hospital. a dramatic rescue on lake michigan. surf so rough, two teenagers got caught up in. the strong rip currents near muskegon. a surfer pulled the 13 and 14-year-old girls from the water with the help of public safety officers. one teen wasn't breathing but is now in stable condition.

what you're looking at is wreckage from a mid-air collision in western slovakia. two planes carrying dozens of sky dive ears crashed. seven people died and 31 survived. some survived by deploying parachutes and jumping to safety. investigators want to know if one or both of the planes were overloaded. a gas explosion during a construction at a new york city high school has seriously injured three workers. firefighters were still searching the rubble late last night looking for clues. the fifth and sixth floors of
