today they faced a judge on the charge that king killed matthew shlonsky. stephen tschida stepped out of the d.c. superior court where moments ago king faced a judge. steve: even though he -- stephen: even though he did not spend to kill shlonsky, opening fire on busy street required him to remain in custody. a gun battle raged across 7th street northwest on saturday at 5:00 p.m. 23-year-old shlonsky got out of a cab and walking up seventh street when a bullet tore through his chest and ripped apart his lungs and

heart. investigators collected evidence off of a street blanketed in shell casings and spent bullets. his grandfather spoke about the loss of matthew shlonsky. >> it's a tragedy. >> during questioning king told investigators he had been shot days prior and was involved in a beef with a rival crew. he told how vims in a bargendy car and he exchanged gunfire. when he admit head fired in the direction of shlonsky the investigators determined they had enough evidence to charge him with second-degree murder. stephen: when he described his actions and defend what he said king yelled out to people on the street to get out of the way before he opened fire.

he will remain behind bars until september 23 when he appears for his preliminary hearing. reporting live, stephen tschida, abc7 news. leon: we are still following that breaking news now in northeast washington, where a standoff has been underway for hours. near a home on the corner of 18th and otis street. inside was the suspect in the district 99th homicide this year. police believe that the suspect scholl and killed a woman around 10 -- shot and killed a woman around 10:00 this morning. her name has not been released but police say she did know her killer. with a sudden increase in homicides in the district comes an increase in the number of funerals as well. today the reverend steve young presided over a service for 33-year-old eric jackson shot to death two weeks ago. reverend young says it's reminding him of the dark days in the height of the city drug war and murder epidemic from 20 years ago. when he had a wall filled with the homicide funeral programs. he says it is time to fight

back. >> we have so many killings but we have stopped counting. they keep happening. we need to come together and realize we have to work together. leon: for the murder of eric jackson, so far the police have not made an arrest. two women have been sentenced for february's murder inside d.c. upscale donovan hotel. in may, jamyra gallmon pleaded guilty to killing david messerschmitt. a judge ten sensed her -- sentenced her to 24 years in prison. her partner will serve six months in the gait. gallmon stabbed messerschmitt but he fought back. they found each other on an ad on craigslist. wall street reeling as the dow plummeted 530 points, 3.5% loss on the heels of yesterday's 350-point selloff. they combined to give wall street the worst week since 2011. oil prices dropped today

2-year-old rottweiler. jessica loved her 10-year-old son. >> frankie rides him around on the skateboard. jennifer: saturday, the dog was shot and killed by a prince george's police officer. >> how do you tell a 10-year-old the cops shot and killed your dog? jennifer: police came to the house in beltsville after gonzalez's adult brother suspected of vandalizing a neighbor's car. the brother appeared to be under the influence of drugs. in the arrest report officers said beyond the screen door there was a big route wileer getting a -- rottweiler getting aggressive and the officer screamed "get your dog, get your dog" as the defendant discharged the dog toward the officers by opening the screen door without controlling the dog. it went on to say the officer shot the dog in the head after it ran toward him in an aggressive manner. the sister believes the dog just wanted to go to to the bathroom but she wasn't there. there is another mystery with the story and it's about the home surveillance video. parts of it, critical parts of it are missing. officially police tell us they
