>> good tuesday morning to you. i'm reena ninan. >> i'm phillip mena. the stock market on everybody's mind this morning. >> china the secd largest economy in the world. a lot of people anxious. it's been a great six years with the stock market in the u.s. very, very strong. some people are saying it's just correcting itself right now. it will be fine. wait it out. this very moment, lots of people watching to see how the stocks will be performing. it's been a mostly positive day on the asian major marks so far. >> the only exchange suffering a seriously sharp decline shanghai, china, where the main index plunged more than 6% right out of the gate before recovering somewhat. >> all that followed by a wild ride on wall street. the dow plummeting it nearly 1100 points yesterday befor closing down 588 points. abc's rebecca jarvis has all the details. >> reporter: it started with a plunge. the dow cratering an unprecedented 1,000 points just minutes after the opening bell. >> it give you little butterflies in your stomach. >> reporter: even veteran

traders stunned by the drop. what's one word to describe the feeling on the floor today? >> anxious. >> reporter: moments later, stocks clawing back, reversing some of the losses. >> people were nervous, but there was not that sick feeling in your stomach that sometimes you get at times like this. >> reporter: before plummeting yet again. so what's driving the volatility? triggered by a massive sell-off that started in china last week, the dow now down more than 16 points in just five days. traders fearing the slowdown in china could lead to weakness here. the white house trying to calm those nerves. >> what i would encourage people to evaluate is the ongoing strength and resilience of the u.s. economy. >> reporter: but to many on wall street, with stocks up nearly 60% over the last five years, this slide was long overdue. there feels like there's this disconnect. the economy's chugging along, but the market has gone up exponentially. >> the market has gotten ahead of where the actual economy is. >> reporter: ending with an

unusual sigh of relief. the dow down 588 points. but it could have been so much worse. the typical 401(k) is now down about $9,000 in just the last week. all eyes now on china. what happens in their markets and the federal reserve's next move. when do they hike interest rates from 0% where they have been for the last six years. phillip, reena. >> rebecca, thank you. with oil prices plummeting, impacting the stock market, the dramatic downward price trend continues at the gas pump. the average price for a gallon of gas nationwide is now $2.59. the lowest average for this time of year in 11 years. analysts predict it will drop below $2 by christmas even though the demand for gas remains high. >> that would be a great christmas gift. >> it appears vice president joe biden is leaning towards a run for the white house. there are reports president obama has given his okay and the white house saying even in a

primary battle between biden and hillary clinton, the president may pick sides. biden is expected to announce his decision before the first democratic debate in mid-october. hispanic voters are showing little support for republican donald trump in a new poll. the gallup survey shows just 14% have a favorable opinion of trump. two-thirds view him unfavorably. 34% of hispanic voters consider jeb bush a favorable candidate. 23% think otherwise. the only democrat firmly recognized by hispanic voters hillary clinton. 58% have a favorable opinion of her. devastating news from the world of auto racing. driver justin wilson who was seriously injured in a race on sunday has died. wilson was hit in the head by a piece of debris from another car's crash during a race in pennsylvania. he was airlifted to a hospital where he was in a coma. he died of his injuries last night and he was 37 years old. >> so heartbreaking. a lot of people refer to him as the gentle giant of nascar. he has a wife, two young daughters.

they are all heartbroken, the debris hit his head and he died so suddenly. >> our thoughts too them. a new york traffic controller directed a pilot with engine trouble to a nonexisting landing strip at a closed airport just before the small plane crashed. that's the preliminary result of an ntsb investigation into the crash which killed a pilot earlier this month. experts say the final decision of where to land the plane rests with the pilot. >> you don't know exactly what he was dealing with. his passenger will be able to tell the ntsb what he saw. >> the passenger told investigators he heard some sputtering before the pilot lost control. some expect that the air traffic controller will get a letter of reprimand. no more victims have been found following that crash at a british air show. officials had feared the death toll would soar past the 11 confirmed dead. so far, that's not the case. abc's terry moran reports from the crash site. >> reporter: at the crash site, a crane gently lifted pieces of wreckage from the

roadside. they're still looking for human remains here from that almost surreal moment at saturday's air show, the 1950s hawker hunter t-7 high in the cloudless sky performing a thrilling loop above the ground, then failing to pull up and exploding on to a highway. >> oh! >> reporter: a terrifying, traumatizing sight. >> oh. >> there's nothing we can do except stay where we are. >> reporter: the huge fireball of impact, the plane, loaded with fuel. this whole scene is now a memorial, people leaving flowers and notes of sympathy and prayer. the inferno of the crash, just a couple hundred yards back there, and given that this is an area of many villages, local businesses and busy roads, it's a miracle there weren't more victims. alish southall was on that road when the jet came down. >> we just ran and just protected ourselves from the debris. >> reporter: survival and loss in an incomprehensible instant.

terry moran, abc news, england. >> japan is the latest victim of a killer typhoon that battered the southern parts of japan with rains and powerful winds. thousands were forced to evacuate their homes. the typhoon has been spinning in the pacific. it killed at least 26 people in the philippines including a 9-month-old boy and his sister. help is arriving from near and far in the northwest wildfire zone. 70 firefighters from australia and new zealand are doing orientation in boise, idaho before heading to the fire lines. some of them could be deployed to what is now the largest fire in washington state history. it's burned more than 400 square miles. thousands of volunteers have answered washington's call for help. so far hundreds with the right experience have been approved to work. >> sexually suggestive banners from members of a fraternity in virginia with going viral this morning. reading hope your baby girl is ready for a good time and freshman daughter drop-off hung at an off campus house where
