we thought the storm was going to pass florida and not make landfall but it looks like if you're tracking tron cal storm erika, it could turn into the first hurricaning to hit florida in about ten years. >> the storm has already left four dead in dominica and could bring heavy rain to the virgin islands and puerto rico from before taking aim on the southeast. here's rob marciano. >> florida's fear, scenes liking this tropical storm erika hammering the eastern caribbean with up to 15 inches of rain in 24 hours on the island of dome nick ca. rivers of muddy water washing over cars, trees and debris covering roads. terrified residents watch as the flood when suddenly, the side of this church sheered off. on the island at least four people killed. 20 missing. in florida, it's been 3,595 days since the state's last hurricane. >> we've been very fortunate for a long time that we've got to get prepared. >> reporter: preparations well

under way as officials watch the storm's every move. clearly lots of moisture with tropical storm erika. prosecutor needs the rain. they may be getting too much today and this storm forecast to strengthen as it approaches the lower 48, florida, georgia, south carolina in the path come sunday, monday and tuesday. rob marciano, abc news, new york. that is not the only trouble in the tropics. in the pacific, ignacio strengthened into a hurricane. the storm's maximum sustained winds increased to about 90 miles an hour. the storm is east-southeast of hilo, hawaii. ignacio could bring dangerous wind gusts and rain to the hawaiian islands at the beginning of next week. former president george w. bush returns to new orleans to help the city mark the 10th anniversary of hurricane katrina. yesterday president obama praised the city for its ability to bounce back from the effects of the storm. he spoking in an area of the city that was once 17 feet

underwater. >> if katrina was initially an example of what happens when government fails, the recovery has been an example of what's possible when government works together. >> tomorrow is the actual anniversary of that deadly storm. new orleans is hosting a power of community gathering which is the city's signature post katrina event. former president bill clinton will also be there. now to the investigation into this week's on air shootings in virginia. police discovered items in a car rented by gunman vester flanagan that suggest he wanted to evade authorities. among those items found, a wig, sunglasses, a shawl, a black hat and three additional license plates. they also recovered a glock .9 millimeter pistol and six magazines of ammunition. >> the challenge for the colleagues of the shooting victims allison parker and adam ward is to continue working while going through an emotional ordeal. the challenge was there for all to see as abc's jim avila

reports. >> good morning, it is just after 5:00 on thursday -- >> reporter: the early morning team at roanoke channel 7 minus two on the day after. >> we come to you this morning with very heavy hearts. two of our own were shot and killed during a live shot yesterday morning. >> reporter: murdered on live unedited tv, a fatal interruption during a simple feature about tourism. gunshots and screams. leaving the reporter and photographer dead, the shooter's image briefly captured by the wounded photographer's lens and almost immediately identified as a former employee -- >> so i immediately think is he coming to the station. is he coming to the station to kill us all. >> reporter: roanoke police ring the station, employees warned to stay away from windows. news crews kept on base. that violent suspect now on the loose. >> the suspect is believed to be armed and dangerous. use caution. >> reporter: tracked from southwestern virginia, in total traveling 200 miles. but shooting himself fatally just before the trooper could

get to him. >> it's affected everybody in this community and i think everybody across the country. i mean, because she was such a kind and sweet person. >> i texted her that i loved her and to have a good day. and she said, "good night, sweet boy." and that was the last that i ever heard from her. >> reporter: now some good news about the third victim in the shooting. survivor vicki gardener woke up from a medically induced coma and is now in good condition. jim avila, abc news, roanoke, virginia. and vicki gardener has been speaking out about the attack for the first time. gardener was shot in the back and she's told her husband that the gunman's pistol misfired as he stood over her. eventually she got up and walked to an ambulance after being wounded. she has lost a kidney and had two surgeries since wednesday. tim gardener says his wife is now surrounded by family. the campus of savannah state university was on lockdown overnight after a shooting.

a spokeswoman says one person was taken to the hospital. the victim's injuries are not known. police say no arrests were made in the lockdown at the georgia school was lifted after a few hours. jurors in new hampshire began their first full day of deliberations of the sex assault case at an elite prep school. it was part of a tradition called senior salute. he denies they had sex despite the fact he bragged about it on social media. jeb bush picked up the endorsement of former republican heavyweight eric cantor. the pair are campaigning together today in canter's home state of virginia. captoras once the house majority leader. he left congress after a stunning upset. on the democratic side, hillary clinton attacking her republican rivals on the issue of women's rights. this as her poll numbers start to slip. here's abc's cecilia vega. >> reporter: in the swing state of ohio, hillary clinton coming
