in a few minutes. kimberly: thank you, steve. tomorrow is the big return. terrible traffic tuesday. and all the kids will be back in school. wake up with "good morning washington." eileen whelan and julie will have the forecast. and the travel times. jonathan: the other big thing going on in baseball. this week is just as good as playoff baseball on the waterfront. it is crunch time for the nats. kimberly: they trail the mets in the standings. but a key three-game series underway right now. suzanne kennedy live at national park. the pennant race is really heating up. suzanne: it may say september on the calendar but it feels like october here at nationals park as the washington nationals are facing off against the n.l. east rivals the new york mets. we had a great fourth inning here. with wilson ramos hitting a ground slam but it deteriorated. we are in the eighth inning and now the mets are up by three.

the nationals but they still have five games left against the amazings. two more in d.c. then they will finish off the season in queens. the final three-game series of the year is at citifield beginning friday, october 2. kimberly: now a former member of the loudoun county board of supervisors is apologized after he was arrested. shawn williams admitted to confronting a friend and neighbor after a party and police say he strong-armed his way in the man's home. in a statement he released today he said in part this poor decision highlights a personal shortcoming that can no longer be denied or compartmentalized. it has become painfully clear i need help with my alcohol abuse and i am getting professional help. quite an admission there. he resigned shortly after the incident. jonathan: d.c. police arrested a man in the 107th murder of the city. etheridge is charged with first-degree murder. police say he shot and killed another man in northwest. another man injured and is expected to survive.

keep in mind 105 people were murdered in washington of all of 2014. a horrible crash to tell you about in maryland that claimed the lives of mother and father yesterday afternoon near kirby road and tinkers creek drive. a stretch that is known for being dangerous. brianne carter spoke with the mother of the woman who was killed and she joins us live. brianne: tonight, two families are in mourning. this crash claimed the life of a husband and wife. take a look here. you can see the tire marks and the class from a car and debris that remains here along the road. according to prince george's county police the accident happened just before 2:00 sunday afternoon. prince george's's county police tell abc7 a lexus and suv were involved. the circumstances of what led up to this are still under investigation. the couple in the lexus been identifieded by the family

members and the toby. they were taken to an area hospital where they died. the mother says her daughter worked at an area bank and the couple had three children. >> the crash to devastate my family and the son-in-law family. my daughter was a perfect daughter. just like the rest of my kids. perfect to me. brianne: back live, you can see there is a speed camera along the road. i asked police whether or not speed was a factor in this. this afternoon they tell me that is still part of the ongoing investigation. what we do also know at this point, no word from prince george's county police on whether or not charges will be filed. reporting live, brianne carter, abc7 news. kimberly: heart-breaking. jonathan: very sad. well, the three-day weekend mark the end of summer is

about over. kimberly: hundreds of thousands from the area hit the road with some of the lowest gas prices in more than a decade. kellye lynn in mobile track 7 on i-95. do you have company out there? kellye: yes, indeed. a lot of company as you might imagine. hundreds of thousands of people were expected to travel this holiday weekend. now many of those people are on their way home. it's congested and we are moving. we're moving at about 40 miles per hour. so that is pretty good. i will give you a look at the traffic right now. you can see plenty of cars out here. we have seen a good presence by the virginia state police. six cars since we got on the road. we have been on the road for the last hour or so. the traffic would be heavier after noon. people on the roads have been

warned about this. the traffic probably won't die down until the afternoon. the gas prices are down. average price is $2.40. a gallon. back to you. kimberly: safe travels. thank you. this is hard to believe. it has been a year since these two beautiful children went missing. sarah and jacob disappear and the mother kathryn is believed to have been the last person to see them. coming up at 5:00, their father speaks out. diane cho has that report coming up in the next hour. jonathan: person was hit and killed by a pickup truck. these are not vehicles that are supposed to be driven on the roads. they are made for offroads. no word on the pickup truck

driver. police searching for the killer in temple hills. they found a man dead in front of an apartment building on dallas way. another guy was shot and a third man was stabbed. >> no threat to the community. this is not random. there is $25,000 reward leading to arrest. jonathan: there may have been witnesses since it happened in open building. but no one has come forward to assist. kimberly: crime alert in d.c. robberies in northwest washington overnight. both crimes the police are looking for three men. the descriptions are vague but similar.

sam ford spoke with one of the victims and he has his story at 5:00. >> now a story only on 7. there is a violent assault at montgomery strip mall. kevin lewis reveals the bizarre weapon in that attack. kevin: a road rage beat-down. police say the male victim waiting to offload his delivery truck. at the grocery store loading dock when frederick cut the line backing up his truck inside. the men exchanged words before he shouted, "you koreans should go back to korea." the 66-year-old grabbed a metal club and allegedly went on to hit the victim over the head twice. >> no answer at the home that he respects. we called his employer.

"7 on your side" investigator chris papst explains. chris, what happened? chris: a lottery says this ticket worth $20,000 was, id in error -- was,, issued in error. they never think the money won't be paid off if they hit it big. august 22, ardella newman bought this ticket in shoppers on alexandria off route 1. one of the winning numbers was 16. when she matched that number and saw she won $20,000 you can imagine just how excited she was. she is retired and on a fixed income. $20,000 would mean a lot. not only to her but to her family. >> i was so excited. i called my sister and i said hit the lottery for $20,000. she said, "stop lying." chris: but when newman went to cash in the ticket, she got bad news. at 6:00, we'll tell you why the lottery said the ticket is

not valid and she will not be getting her money. chris papst, abc7 news. jonathan: thank you. police in kentucky investigating a drone crash. this happened at a football game over the weekend. the drone flew straight in the press box saturday night as the team was about to take on louisiana lafayette. it was privately owned. police are considering what to do and try to find the owner. >> there are all kind of things that can go wrong. clear example of what happened. you have a full stadium. shortly before the kickoff. drone clearly got away, which can happen. something bad can happen. jonathan: scary. nobody was hurt. this comes a week after a drone crashed into empty seats during the u.s. open. kimberly: kayaker is sharing his story after a close encounter with a shark. this happened in california. that is dylan marks. he is recovering from a nasty shark bite. it happened saturday while he was fishing off the malibu

coast. although he was hurt, mark says the 10-foot long hammer head shark that sunk the teeth in his foot is if real victim. >> i swung my body around. when i was doing that, it got scared. it thrashed around and i was in the way. kimberly: kimberly: he was airlo the hospital. the run-in with the shark comes a week after california kayakers in another area spotted a hammer head circling their kayak. jonathan: that is the first one that we heard the victim feeling bad for the shark. feel bad for that guy. kimberly: environmentalist. amazing video from this weekend. the lsu football game was canceled. you will see why. jo kimberly: yeah, that's why. cameras capturing several lightning strikes including these. play was halted in baton rouge less than five minutes in the game. the school's athletic director says the decision was the right one. jonathan: you think? kimberly: because of concern over the players and the fans' safety. look at that! wow! jonathan: i love it when we say it's the most prudent

jonathan: as the candidates are out there running for president and hitting the campaign trail this labor day, busy time for them. new poll numbers show hillary clinton may be in trouble. we have the new numbers. reporter: hillary clinton laboring for votes in iowa. new poll numbers have the percentage dropping in that state and new hampshire from bernie sanders is leading by nine points.

7:20. >> i get more sleep. i usually stay up late to do homework. i don't get a lot of sleep. but the time change is good. >> after ten years of sometimes emotional debate. the fairfax county school board voted last fall to push back the high school start times by an hour. citing scientific study show later start times often lead to improved academic performance. while many look forward to the extra sleep, these high schooler haves other ideas. >> i thought mostly segtive. >> all three take part in the extracurricular activities that will also start lately so they won't get home close to 7:00. >> it will push everything back. >> we'll go to bed later. >> many agree on a benefit, not having to wake up when it feels like night. >> that is a positive. we don't like waking up in the dark.

jonathan: this is not only stupid but it's disgusting. two teens attacking a referee in football game and caught on camera. kimberly: this is upsetting to watch this over and over. boys have been suspended. as brandi hitt shows us, they could face criminal charges. jonathan: they should. brandi: the texas referee blind sided, hit not once, but twice. you first see a john jay defensive back take him down and then a second player dives in to him. last friday night's game is still the talk on espn.

>> nobody condones it. even i talked to, nobody had seen. >> hard hate came after the teammates were ejected from the game against marble falls high school. the john jay players involved are now suspended from the team and the school. according to the austin football officials association the referee is wanting to press charges. >> there are 23 states around the country that have decided to create laws that make it a criminal action to assault a referee. texas is one of those states. >> in 2011, florida youth football ref filed a lawsuit after being tackled on the field by the players and the fans unhappy with a call. he settled this case for more than a quarter million dollars. in texas, the northside independent school district investigating this incident tells abc7 news the video is extremely disturbing. it's not the good sportsman like behavior we teach students. it will not tolerate this kind of behavior.

of year ago? the tech company apple holds a press vent on wednesday and could unveil the next iphone and could announce a new apple tv and launch a larger ipad. the event is 1:00 p.m. eastern and will be streamed online. jonathan: everybody will look for a new phone. if you feel trapped by the cell phone contract, you are not alone. good news is some carriers are getting rid of them. kimberly: it's not all good news. consumer reporter john matarese tells us about a big change coming so you don't waste your news. john: verizon and sprint are joining t-mobile to get rid of the two-year phone contact and the end of the $199 smartphone. what does it mean for the phone owners? next time you need a new phone? it's a right of fall. apple releases a new iphone and the smart phone frenzy is on. for $199 millions upgrade the phones but that is about to change.

offering entrepreneurship as a minor. according to the daily progress, they have to take initial class on startup and can break to one of two concentration. social or technology entrepreneurship. the school what been offering informal programs for a while but the minor allows for more collaborations within different schools in the university. sign of the times. this labor day, president obama signed executive order requiring paid sick leave for employees of the federal contractors. he made the announcement this morning and the workers will get a minimum of one hour of paid leave for 30 hours they worked. the white house says 300,000 of those people will be getting the benefit for first time. overweight adults are encouraged to exercise for their health.
