170 people on board and burst into flames on the tarmac. you see the passengers streaming off the plane and abc's matt gutman on the scene in las vegas. good morning, matt. >> reporter: hey good morning, george, investigators already here on the scene likely going to investigate why the fire seemed to spread from the engine to the fuselage. now, earl quarter this morning we got up to see that plane up close. you can still see the smoke smudging the fuselage. now, ba calling this a technical issue but the pilot credited with saving 170 lives called it something different. a catastrophic failure. >> speedbird 2276 heavy, we are evacuating on the runway. we have a fire. i repeat, we are evacuating. >> reporter: this morning the scramble to explain why this jetliner turned foo a fireball. >> mayday, mayday, speedbird, 2276 request fire services. >> speedbird, 2276 heavy fire services are on the way rfrjts flight 2276 bound for london

bursting into flames on the runway in las vegas. you can see them here scrambling to safety. >> what we had here was an uncontained explosion of a jet engine on takeoff roll and that means it came apart catastrophically creating fire and the necessity for the flight crew to stop the airplane on the runway and get everybody off the airplane. >> reporter: 157 passengers and 13 crew aboard the 777 starting its takeoff with a belly fuel of fuel. more than a dozen were injured but all of them were in mortal danger. experts tell abc news a mechanical failure could have caused the engine to come apart spitting out fire and pieces of hot metal which in turn could have sparked a separate fire in the cargo hold. quick thinking crew helped the passengers flop down the emergency slides to the tarmac. >> is everybody okay? we jumped down. you could see the flames and smoke and that's when it sort of hit me anyway it was pretty scary. >> reporter: survival instinct

kicking in with this mother. >> it was so instinct, literally it was fight or flight and i just jumped. i couldn't even say i felt anything. that's how fast it happened. >> reporter: friar crews sprang to the scene and bystanders, even passengers on other planes watch in horror. that billowing column of black easily visible from offices a mile away. the fire paralyzing the airport. now, the airport has re-opened the runway. can you probably hear the plane above me and ba is saying it's going to try to get those passengers back home as quickly as possible and while investigators begin their work, what is clear is had that plane taken off on fire this would have been a very different story. robin. >> you're right about that. thank you. abc news aviation consultant colonel stephen ganyard joins us from washington. give us more details on what happened here, steve. >> good morning, robin. very interesting because what happened is early in this takeoff roll as the airplane ras running down the runway only

going 90 miles an hour we say it was an uncontained engine failure. what that means is the engine really just exploded and it sent hot metal into the fuselage and started a fire in the fuselage itself so the fire you see in those pictures is really the airplane itself not the engine that's on fire and after they put the fire out you could see how clearly that fire came to almost penetrating into the cabin which meant this could have been a very serious, serious accident. >> oh, absolutely. as matt was saying, as well. you said they put the fire out quickly. they were on the scene like that and the crew and passengers did a great job of getting off that plane so quickly. >> he did. apparently what happened is, well, they were right on the middle of the runway so the crews were right there, the rescue crews right there to put the fire out. when the cabin crew opened the door they saw the smoke on the left side of the airplane and so they got everybody out the right side, closed that door back up to keep the smoke out of the cabin. crew did a great job in this instance but now it's going to

be up to the ntsb to figure out why did this engine actually blow up. >> we want answers to that. all right, steve, thank you so much. >> such a strange one. we move to the race for president now. "your voice, your vote" and hillary clinton finally apologizing for using that private e-mail server. admitting it was a mistake for the first time in an exclusive interview with abc news, cecilia vega here with that. good morning. >> reporter: she had said she would not apologize for that private e-mail and home server but now changing her tune with her poll numbers slipping. this is a new contrite hillary clinton. >> that was a mistake. i'm sorry about that. i take responsibility. >> reporter: hillary clinton doing exactly what she said she would not do, apologizing for that private e-mail and server not just once but twice. >> in retrospect certainly as i look back at it now even though it was allowed i should have used two accounts. everybody in the government, i communicated with, and that was a lot of people knew i was using

stretch of highway urged to use extreme caution this morning. authorities are saying with no pattern of days or times, everyone is at risk. this morning, arizona drivers on edge while authorities are investigating what they consider a possible act of domestic terrorism. >> any time that you have multiple shootings against american citizens on a highway, that's terrorism. they're trying to frighten or kill somebody. >> reporter: officials reporting nine possible shootings incidents over the last ten days, vehicles struck by projectiles as they drove along a short eight-mile stretch of i-10. the major thoroughfare in the heart of phoenix, arizona. >> i don't know if it's a copycat crime. >> reporter: starting august 29th a bullet shattering this windshield injuring a 13-year-old girl and a minute later one hits this tour bus. luckily the driver was the only person on board. >> the person almost took me

away from my family. >> reporter: and tuesday, two more shootings, one of the cars hit was a police sergeant's personal vehicle. >> both vehicles were hit in the driver's side passenger window by a projectile. i would call that related. >> reporter: the fbi and atf now joining the investigation, police warning drivers to be extra vigilant hoping they can catch the alleged shooter or shooters before it's too late. >> somebody will get hurt or somebody will get killed if this continues. >> reporter: so authorities are now offering up a $0,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest and also, robin, they put up a tip line on tse electronic billboards so people can call if they see anything suspicious. >> hopefully that will help. all right, kayna, thanks. now amy with the other top stories starting with a growing situation over one of the nation's biggest airlines. >> the ceo of united airlines and two others have resigned amid a growing corruption

scandal accused giving preferential trement to the port authority which operates in the new york area. at issue is whether united flew a dedicated nonstop route to south carolina where the chairman had a vacation home so that the airline could win his support for airport improvements. that former chairman was also linked to the so-called bridgegate scandal in new jersey. united says it is cooperating with the investigation. and new frustration in europe as more refugees pour in from the middle east. tempers flaring in hungary with hundreds again breaking through police lines near the border. that country will soon be deploying military forces. a half million refugees have now entered europe this year alone and today the head of the european commission called for a redistribution plan that would require european nations to accept a minimum number of refugees. back here in this country teachers in seattle are walking the picket lines on this first day of school. contract negotiations broke down over pay, teacher evaluations

parents. who does that? this video showing both young men being booked at the county jail. cameron's high school friends say they're shocked. >> i couldn't imagine cameron doing something like that. >> reporter: both boys played football. christopher seen in this ncaa recruiting tape even getting a scholarship to the college of charleston in west virginia. when police arrived at the house there was a strong gas smell and they later found a gas line tampered with. police suspecting the brothers may have been trying to burn down the house. they've been charged with aggravated assault and arson. they're due in court for a preliminary hearing on friday. george. >> boy, that is such a strange one. okay, thanks very much. we turn to that murder mystery in dallas. a young dentist gunned down in her apartment complex. question about a possible link to a love triangle. police have interviewed and searched the home of her boyfriend's ex-girlfriend. abc's ryan owens has the latest. >> reporter: kendra hatcher posted smiling pictures of her and her new boyfriend on facebook. she was a dentist. he a dermatologist.

the question this morning, was jealousy of their young love a motive for her murder? abc news obtaining just release search warrants from dallas police that claim hatcher was followed, tracked by her boyfriend's ex-girlfriend before she was gunned down in the parking garage of her dallas hiisgh-re. >> female is laying next to a silver chevrolet sedan with the door open. >> reporter: according to the documents the 33-year-old ex-girlfriend used a black iphone to follow hatcher's movements last wednesday, even allegedly paying an unnamed gunman $500 to rob the pediatric dentist and bring her hatcher's driver's license as proof. the search warrant also says she ended a two-year relationship with hatcher's current boyfriend earlier this year. dallas detectives say they have interviewed the ex-girlfriend, searched her apartment and seized a computer, but have not charged her with any crime. >> we have a shooting.

we're looking for a black jeep cherokee. >> reporter: so far the driver of that jeep caught on surveillance tape leaving the murder scene is the only one charged. 23-year-old crystal cortes has not yet entered a plea but police say she's confessed to conspiring with the ex-girlfriend. this morning, police are still trying to find the gunman and now trying to figure out if a jilted lover masterminded the murder. for "good morning america," ryan owens, abc news, dallas. >> our thanks to ryan and now the latest on that high school football referee blindsided on the field by two players. those players now allege the ref directed racial slurs at them. and one of their coaches has been placed on paid leave for what he allegedly said to them. abc's t.j. holmes has the details. >> reporter: the two players responsible for this vicious takedown of a referee tell school officials they were retaliating for bad calls and his bad words. >> the players were feeling lots

rescue." this morning is all about muffins and you can grab them on the go but are they a smart choice? abc's becky worley is here with some answers. good morning, becky. >> reporter: good morning, michael. muffins, sweet, filling, homey, like a little piece of grandma sending out into the world each day but wah, wah, these muffins may be a huge contributor to that muffin top you're trying to get under control. from a staple at your morning meeting to grab and go food at the coffee shop, but -- >> you're grabbing and going but you're really not doing yourself any favors. >> reporter: we bought them from starbucks, dunkin' donuts and crossco. what's a food equivalent. >> you'll be so surprised. >> whoa. >> believe it or not -- >> reporter: wait, this ee ways to that? >> that fact, these onion rings have less fat than this muffin. this muffin is weighing in at 32

grams of fat. >> but there's also sugar in here, right. >> absolutely. let's bring that cooler right on in. >> and the soda. >> reporter: compared to store bought onion rings it's close. the muffin has 32 grams of fat, 40 grabs of sugar and 600 calories. >> imagine an average man or woman around 2,000 calories for the day, 600 calories, boom. right there that's a third of your food intake if you're a woman. >> exactly. >> reporter: the starbucks muffin comes in more modestly at 380 calories with 16 grabs of fat but 30 grams of sugar. from dunkin' donuts this is their reduced fat muffin and does have the lowest fat at 10 grams but piles on 40 grabs of sugar and 410 calories. >> people think they're doing themselves a favor because they're choosing the reduced fat option. >> oh. part of the issue is the size. 30 years ago a muffin was 1.5 ounces. now the starbucks muffin is 4 ounces and this one from costco, the size wasn't posted on the box so i had to call and ask. one muffin they say is 5.75

ounces, almost four times the size of our '80s muffin but get this, they say a serving is half a muffin and contacted all three muffinmakes. starbucks said we're committed to offer ago a swied variety of food in the stores. the starbucks blueberry muffin is a favorite. dunkin' donuts says they offer a wide range of choices including better-for-you items from our ddsmart menu and costco declined to comment. i don't want to be the calorie cops. >> boo! >> i'm ruining your muffin routine. but, hey, that's the point. if you add something to a routine you have to know what you're doing. if you have seven muffins, pumpkin and coffee cake, even more calorie dense, seven a week adds 4,000 calories to your daily ee teen much that's the equivalent of tah-dah, a stick and a half of butter. >> okay, some of us do have a little sweet tooth in the morning so what is an alternate. >> i'll let you do the honors. so one alternate is smaller

johnson made history and broke color barriers becoming the first african-american woman to grace the cover of american "vogue." more than 500 covers later in a career spanning nearly four decades johnson has more than cemented her place in fashion history. now in her new memoir, "the face that changed it all," johnson is opening up about her early years growing up in buffalo, new york. her meteoric rise to fame as well as her recent return to the headlines in december as one of the more than two dozen women who accused comedian bill cosby of drugging them or sexually assaulting them. >> it was almost like a family member had betrayed me. it was such a huge sense of betrayal for me. these women gave me the courage to come forward. >> reporter: to date cosby has not been charged with a crime in connection to the accusations of drugging and sexual assault and his lawyers have dismissed the allegations. and beverly johnson joins us now. thank you for being here. >> well, thank you for having

me. >> we just heard you say in the piece that you felt like cosby was a family member who had betrayed you. >> yes. >> you called him back then. you never got to speak with him. you just spoke with his wife. >> yes. >> what would you say to him now? >> i forgive you. >> what do you think should happen to bill cosby? >> well, i'm going to leave that to the justice department and i just feel that he's a lightning rod for a much bigger conversation and that conversation would be the rape culture in america. >> you also write so much about your life as a supermodel and it really sounds like august the things we hear about are true, cigarettes, champagne and drugs. does that pretty much sum it up. >> yes and no food. you left that part out. what d >> what did you eat. >> nothing. we thought water was fattening back then. >> how did you sustain yourself? >> youth. >> youth. >> youth. >> but describe what a typical day was like. >> well, a typical day is, you

know, waking up at 5 a.m. and going on a shoot and, you know, traveling the world and working with amazing photographers. i do remember sleeping a lot in between shooting but it was just a wonderful career, of course, what happens with the wonderful career, you have a personal life also, so i got married very young at 19 years old and, you know, i had an ex-husband that didn't get the meaning of ex and that kind of was, you know, a little complicated but basically it was really an extraordinary life. >> extraordinary. extraordinarily glamorous and incredible but also painful. i mean, the drug addiction was real and serious and life-threatening. >> well, absolutely. i think that people and particularly in the '70s, remember it wasn't addictive in that it increased your intelligence. >> made your eyes sparkle. i read -- >> you thought you looked better when you were on drugs. >> and you lost your appetite so i mean we know more now than we

did then. we lost a lot of people to and we are still losing a lot of people to drugs. >> you say the '70s but is that culture in the modeling world still happening now. >> i don't know. i'm not there in it but hopefully people understand the complications of drugs and the dangers of drugs and -- and basically that's why i really wanted to do my memoirs and that's why i really wanted to share my sobriety with everyone. >> how did you turn your life around and find sobriety? >> i found sobriety in a 12-step program and i found sobriety with the spiritual path that i started to go on and also with the strength of my daughter and my family a also just wanting to, you know, have the life that i always wanted and the life i think i deserved. >> well, you certainly put it all on these pains. it's an incredible read. beverly johnson, thank you very much? thank you very much for having me. >> "the face that changed it all" is in stores now. coming up we've got taylste
