3:31 am
from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning. we begin with the debate, number two for the republican presidential hopefuls trying to distinguish themselves in a three-hour primetime face-off. donald trump. >> three hours. >> -- told a reporter that it was longer than "gone with the wind." >> that's pretty long. he looked exhausted by the end of it. by the way, the candidates did mix up a lot of insults with issues as carly fiorina really stole the show. we talked about trump. he was again short on specs and heavy on personality. more now from abc's dan harris. >> i wrote "the art of the deal." i say not in a braggadocious way. >> reporter: after an uncharacteristic attempt at modesty in his opening statement, it took just minutes for donald trump to start engaging in his trademark verbal trench warfare. >> first of all, rand paul shouldn't even be on the stage. he's number 11. he's got 1% in the polls. >> his visceral response to

attack people on their appearance, short, tall, fat, ugly, my goodness, that happened in junior high. >> reporter: but the clash that will perhaps be best remembered came from carly fiorina, the only woman on the stage, a woman about whom donald trump recently told "rolling stone" magazine, look at that face, would anyone vote for that. >> we are the majority of the nation. >> reporter: in response to which she's been running these ads. this is the face of a 61-year-old woman. i am proud of every year and every wrinkle. >> mr. trump later said he was talking about your persona, not your appearance. >> i think women all over this country heard very clearly what mr. trump said. >> i think she's got a beautiful face and i think she's a beautiful woman. >> fiorina wasn't even included in the main debate last time around on fox news. she made the most of her airtime weighing in on everything from putin to planned parenthood.
3:33 am
>> as regards planted parenthood, anyone who has watched this vid toe tape, i dare hillary clinton, barack obama to watch these tapes, watch a fully-formed fetus on the table. its heart beating, its legs kicking while someone says we have to keep it alive to harvest its brain. this is about the character of our nation and if we will not stand up and force president obama to veto this bill, shame on us. >> i thought carly fiorina was the clear winner tonight. i thought her answers were crisp, her answers were clear. she took on everything, her record, foreign policy. i thought she was by far the standout. >> reporter: that notion is bolstered by the fresh stats out of twitter. the company at thing us the two most tweeted responses of the night were fiorina responding to trump about her looks and talking about planned parenthood. the question will be will her performance tonight change her

standing in the polls? as of yesterday in a national poll, she was at 4%. trump was out front at 27% followed by dr. ben carson. a pediatric neurosurgeon who has been on the rise of late. tonight, however, dr. carson was not heard from that much. >> i think he kind of disappeared. i don't think he hurt himself. he definitely didn't help himself. >> by far the most pressing question will be, did trump hurt or help himself? the early analysis we're hearing at this hour is not good for him. >> i think donald trump probably is going to drop in the aftermath of this poll. i think mainly because of his mannerisms and facial expressions and how he treated the other people on stage. i think this performance would have been fine in the first debate. now that time has gone by, i think people were expecting more. so i think he actually hurt himself in the course of this debate. >> reporter: dan harris, abc news, new york. let's talk about the facial expressions from donald trump because there were many where he looked smug.
3:35 am
>> that's smug look. >> i assume that's a smug. there's the angry look or the bad hair day look. and the let me make a point but i really have nothing to say. >> what do you call this one? >> that i have no idea. because the one thing about this one debate that cnn did, and bravo to them for this they did a lot of split screens. i don't know if trump realized he was on the split screens when other candidates were speaking like here but you not only got to see the top of his head but you also got to see those really weird facial expressions. like what is that? >> i wonder if his camp would say that's what people love about donald trump. he's unfiltered. he doesn't feel he's got to be polished. i think to get a little bit more insight we've got to go right on the ground straight to our brandi hitt who was actually able to see the whole thing. brandi, how did it go last night
3:36 am
? what was your sense of it all? >> reporter: hi there, reena. it was an interesting debate. man, did they go after donald trump on all sides on the stage. there were quite a few attacks, one of the big moments of the night was of course, the donald trump, carly fiorina moment. donald trump telling "rolling stone" magazine, how could you vote for that face? and he got so much backlash over that. carly fiorina was asked about that and her answer was very stoic. she covery attacked donald trump on many fronts tonight and she actually said that the voters should be judging whoever's up there on character and make their decision with their vote. she said the voters obviously women in the audience heard what he said and they can make the decision on their own. that was an interesting moment. the big attack i think came right out of the gate. donald trump was on the attack. he told rand paul, you don't even need to be on the stage. you shouldn't be here. that threw many in the audience off guard, especially in the press room. we heard a huge roar. rand paul went back after donald trump and said is this a person

you really want to give nuclear codes to as president. he makes fun of how people look, how they act. this is not somebody who's presidential. that went back and forth. then there was the jeb bush, donald trump moments that went back and forth. trump i should say, i like calling him the donald because i'm so used to him on the "apprentice." he said you have more energy now, jeb. this is great to see. joked about that because jeb bush was a little quiet in the last debate. so jeb bush also stepped up to the plate, went back and forth with donald trump. it was kind of a slugfest tonight. >> yeah, and speaking of jeb, he was making news, as well, i follow him on twitter. he tweeted an apology to his mom, barbara bush. >> reporter: yeah, that got so much attention. sorry mom was the tweet. everybody was like why are you apologizing to barbara bush. we went back and realized okay, he was on camera today and admitted that 40 years ago, he smoked marijuana. they were talking about federal regulations on marijuana. he said okay, i did it.
