on your side. leon: up first, launching a momentous occasion for d.c. and the united states, pope francis is finally here. alison: he landed this afternoon at joint case andrews, shaking the hands of the first family, then hopping into his mode of transportation, that chrysler fiat. leon: we have been covering his landing and reception through the evening, and we begin this hour with life team coverage. we are at the theological college in northeast. jonathan: good evening, a gorgeous night at a spectacular scene at the basilica. the stage is set for a big visit. ine francis has never been the united states, that is history in the making. this is not only the largest church in america but the largest in north america, one of the largest in the world. today he was all smiles, walking

up the steps, and the first handshake with president obama and the first lady and his daughters. that was a scene that will be picturesque. the other scene from the tarmac that made everybody smile is when all the security vehicles, the suburbans and bulletproof cadillacs, and the pope rolls into a small four-door fiat, rolls down the window, and immediately proceeds to where he is staying at the vatican embassy. team coverage begins with jay korff, who was at the vatican embassy, where the pope will spend tonight and tomorrow. when he got there, it was rockstar status for the pope. jay: indeed, electricity in the air, and many of the followers who were standing where i am right now, here is some of the fencing holding them back. the vatican embassy is just over my shoulder. this is where pope francis will

sleep, eat, ponder what was a rerkable and historic day. it would be an image for the ages. after landing for the first time on american soil, pope francis joined the motorcade traveling in a small black fiat, a clear symbol of humility from the pontiff who has preached service above wealth. just before 5 p.m., the pope arrived at the enunciate your in northwest washington, vatican embassy, where more than 1000 followers greeted him. >> it was amazing. the crowd, you could feel the energy change. jay: the spiritual solidarity she felt in the crowd was inspiring. >> even the crowd, it was touching everyone. he is sending a message that everyone can approve.

tomorrow at st. matthew's cathedral. it is 11th hour preparations on rhode island avenue, workers putting up risers directly across from st. matthew's cathedral, one of the major enues for pope francis' visit to the nation's capital. it will be a busy day for the pontiff and d.c. area catholics. among the highlights, a parade at 10:30, then a prayer service at st. matthew's at 11:30. at theere is a 4:00 mass national to look of the immaculate conception, expected to draw thousands. >> the people are expecting some changes in the church, and he is making all these changes for the good. i think it is what we are expecting. richard: security will be tight at many locations. these empty seats will be filled with the faithful. even though there will be

logistical and traffic issues, there is a sense of anticipation. hope withinke he is a very conservative church, and i'm excited that he's here. traffic will be an issue tomorrow. we have a couple of maps. first, around the basilica, parts of michigan avenue, look out for that area. at the white house, long stretches of constitution and parts of new york avenue will be jammed up. you will want to avoid that area. coming back live, this is m street just off connecticut. this is symbolic of a lot of the road closures that you will see. it will be tough to navigate. the best advice, we are told, take mass transit and leave the car at home. jonathan, back to you. jonathan: and that is tomorrow. thsday, the pope has and

stored meeting. havebenedict and john paul both been to the united states, but they never did what pope francis is going to do, is standing in front of the house and senate to listen to the pope speak. has been outspoken on a number of issues including immigration and global warming. it is not clear what he will say, but on the plane coming from cuba to the united states, he was asked about u.s.-cuban relations. he was not offering a preview of what he will say to congress. i will not reveal at this point what i will be talking about, but i am trying to think about what i'm going to mention. obviouslypope francis as somebody who has been very outspoken on a few issues. he is not shy about bringing up things to talk about.

at the same time, he is probably one of the most popular popes in modern times with over 67% approval rating. people seem to like him and he has the right message at the right time. a lot more coverage of the pope online at wjla.com. meanwhile, i'm jonathan elias, leon, allison, back to you. leon: developing news, another major issue on metro. alison: a power outage left a train trapped in passengers forced to evacuate. tom roussey has the scary moments they are talking about tonight. tom, tell us about it. tom: we have a latebreaking news, a few minutes ago after being shut down five hours, a woman opened the gates at the petworth metro station and the green line, both open. metro says they believe that it was a remote terminal unit, something that allows them to control the power, that is what they believed failed, leaving a

lot of passengers in a scary situation. passenger shot this video after d.c. firefighters arrived to evacuate the 500-plus passengers stuck more than an hour. above ground, worried relatives the firer news as trucks swarmed georgia avenue outside of the petworth station. passenger say is the green line train headed through worth, it suddenly stopped. >> sitting, it got real hot. >> the emergency lights were on, then they went out. they sat iny darkness, trying to avoid panic. >> we were talking to each other and keeping each other ok. tom: finally, firefighters arrived. >> they seemed a little slow. tom: firefighters tried to make sure the third rail was all. >> they said we do not trust
