and almost from the start he was challenging everyone. you have got to do better. you've got to work together. from his mouth to god's year, you love to know that perhaps they will come away with a message that all these lawmakers will figure it out and work together and start -- instead of bickering with each other, work for the greater good. people could say it was political. it was not. you talk about the environment, global warming, being good to others, or helping the poor. this is a discussion people have. these are not hot button political issues, or they should not be. i don't think it was heavy-handed. i think everyone heard the speech from both sides of the aisle and even folks over just bystanders that are not particularly religious founded inspiring. they said they really enjoyed with the pope had to say. ,hen you listen to him everybody has made a big deal about the fact that english is not his native tongue, yet he did such intelligent -- elegant job.
4:01 pm
i think you got high marks from a lot of people from all walks of life. we did not hear anyone saying, i disagreed. leon: we are watching as the pontiff is making his weight to the bottom of the staircase -- making his way to the bottom of the staircase. he is still meeting people. the man who speaks for the united states around the globe speaking to the man who speaks for 1.2 billion catholics. the pontiff about to take the stairs and head on to new york. alison: jonathan talked about the address to congress. the moment he stepped out on the balcony and addressed the thousands of people was remarkable at how humble he was. he asked those people to pray for him. and he is also inclusive. and he said if you're not catholic or believer, sending good thoughts. leon: i'm sure you are not surprised. reporter: he was everyone to know he is the people's pope and
4:02 pm
that means all people. catholics, but also christians, people of other faiths, and even people of no faith at all. people find it hard to believe he wants them to know he loves them and god loves them and he listened to feel they are loved. that is the message he is sending here. leon: the matter what your faith is you have to believe that positivity is possible. after what we have and felt of the last couple of days here, and particularly after what we heard this morning and this afternoon. alison: now a short flight of the new york city where he is a -- he has a packed agenda. i believe it started with a prayer service this evening, right? >> and evening prayer service. just like yesterday when he joined with the bishops and others to celebrate daytime prayer. this evening they are gathering in st. patrick's cathedral with cardinal dolan, the archbishop
4:03 pm
of new york. and they will end their day with a time of prayer. it will thank god and intercession. that will be his entry into new york. leon: he has a big speech ahead of him tomorrow where he will be addressing the u.n. we got today's speech with a big one, tomorrow might be bigger. is message isk inconsistent. the dignity of every person. he talked about god being present and everyone of you, and matter what your background and how much money you have, you are all the same in the eyes of god. i think he will say that once again on the global stage at the u.n. leon: he cap saying that she kept bringing up the idea of doing what we do in view of the common good. >> that is a catholic understanding of the goal of politics is. the goal of all that we do is to promote the good of all people.
4:04 pm
it is not as if we are in a zero-sum game where there are winners and losers. god created us in his image, give us the world as a gift to cultivate and serve our needs but the hand onto a future generation. the measure of our success is not to be measured about how well i do or we do as a society, but how do we help all of humanity to enjoy the gift of creation, the gift of life, and come together as a human family. all that god is created us to be. the common good. francis willpope certainly be reminding the world leaders. just as he reminded the national leaders today. jonathan: you might i jump in? it was so interesting to speak to congress -- speech to congress. he quoted thomas merton. he was a monk and his book terrific college students 40 or
4:05 pm
50 years ago. his message was simple, you have to do better. not to be narcissistic or weighed down with your own presence but to go out there and make a difference in other people's lives. and/or the day it was -- and dorothy day, she was an activist who lived among the poor to make a difference. he singled those two people out as a message for congress to say listen, there is a way to do things better. a way to think about others as opposed to thinking about yourselves. alison: he did say in the speech -- he did sort of say yes, business is a noble endeavor. but that noble endeavor has to be for the common good. it has to be keeping all people in mind. it has to involve treating jobs. it has to have good, noble components. not just making money.
4:06 pm
atre wrapping things up andrews. the pope has boarded the american airlines jet. tom is still out there. tell us what you are seeing. reporter: you are mentioning earlier how things were kind of it are sweet -- bittersweet. when the pope arrived it turned absolutely electric. both of the military members and their families, as well as local catholic children and young adults. they all let up huge cheers sustained over several minutes. the pope is now boarded that flag and you can see the is flying out of the window there. the stairs of been taken away so almost everyone is on although are some stairs in the right with folks were boarding. we are about to see something very unusual here. that is an american airlines, technically a commercial flight, taking off from a military base. it is actually american airlines
4:07 pm
flight 9420. you can track it online like a normal flight but it is obviously anything but as far as the folks who are on here besides the pope himself. members of the media who are traveling with him get on earlier. security and folks in the vatican will be traveling with him as well. this plane in the final preparation to get off. a lot of folks here to greet him. you can see that to the left. we are the governor of maryland and his wife, the secretary of eight. wurhl, and a lotrl of catholic schoolchildren. jfks leaving to flight to and he will not have a lot of downtime until he does some services tonight. -- whate over using

were you saying? he is showing john kerry right there as well as larry hogan. he is fighting cancer so he doesn't have hair on his head right now. ,ith the number of dignitaries not the president and his wife this time like when he arrived, but a number of dignitaries about to send him off. you can see the plane is not quite ready to take off because they still have stairs leading up to the back. it's quite a large plane. they are loading the final folks and they will take off from joint base andrews. this is where the president often flies out on air force one. you will see some very important people flying in some very big planes out of here. stairwell is where the staff that accompanies the rest of the folks on the plane. he is the front door and never by deals gets the back door. alison: one thing we are not mentioned about with the pope did today in addition to
4:09 pm
addressing congress and all the folks on the lawn of the capital is he had lunch, essentially, and the comedy of homeless people from -- company of homeless people from washington. >> before he even met with the people who are homeless he offered a beautiful reflection in st. patrick's church, reflected on st. joseph you to carry -- care of mary. he recalled how jesus was born. there was no place for him at the inn in a beautiful meditation of what was going through the mind of joseph. asking god, why am i homeless? why is there no place for me to give shelter to my family? you may ask where is god in all of this. he called upon all of us to remember people who are homeless, hungry, and we of the opportunity to really be like joseph. take care for them and provide shelter, provide food as joseph
4:10 pm
did for jesus and mary. he reminded us of jesus' word from the gospel. "you gave me hungry and you gave me semi-to eat." -- something to eat." and then he was among the people at catholic charity. people who are homeless, hungry, who come for the meal at lunchtime. as far as i could see there was no eating. when he walked into the room he was swarmed by people. he was overwhelmed by the wave of people in the wave of love. whollowed himself to be one had the wash all over him. i don't know how the security people had a chance. one person had a telephone that they wanted to use for a picture and they handed it to a number of his security detail and they obliged. the person might've been homeless but who knows. alison: the feeling of those hundreds of people who normally
4:11 pm
-- they obviously get services from catholic charities which is very generous. but for most people they don't get to have the pope in person. have the head of the church there. >> + he brought real pope -- hope to people -- a sign that he rot real hope to people was one of the people who was homeless was overheard saying, and this could happen, anything is possible. allison? leon and we were talking with father rezika, he travels with the pope. he has no him since he was elected, prior to being elected. he visited him in buenos aires. it was interesting to hear him talk about what the pope is really like when he is in an unguarded moment. he says literally he feels so much more comfortable. they went down to south america, and a very bad art of town, and the run hundreds of kids crawling all over the pope and
4:12 pm
the security detail started pushing kids off. the pope turned and said stop, this is the line which i speak. he feels so much more comfortable. his message to the bishops and cardinals was get out. we need you to meet these people. go out to the highways and talk to people you do not normally come across. it was interesting to hear that take on it. i estimate about how does he feel about the white house, the pomp and circumstance? he said he doesn't, he is not comfortable but he doesn't. leon: one of the things i noticed about his comments there is a patrick's and before congress -- st. patrick's and something before congress. i did hear it in it rings so true. he seems to be convinced that facts do not change people are move people, but stories do. he told stories before congress about people who are quintessential americans who
4:13 pm
reminded us of what this country is best be all about. and then he goes to st. patrick's and tells the story about st. joseph and jesus being born a homeless person. it seemed to me that he has this common touch. it all comes down to his belief. words and faxed it not move people or get people to change believe, but what does is story. >> story, and he is teaching us that our faith is not of faith that really is moved by ideas or creeds or doctrines. but we as christians who have faith in and love a person, and that is jesus. he is reminding us of that fact. we do have a body of belief in doctrine but that is not what moves or changes hearts. he is just saying we are here to fall above with a person. he made a good point yesterday when he was talking to the bishops. he said i am not telling you to learn from jesus, i'm telling
4:14 pm
you to learn jesus. he is saying go but -- go beyond the words of jesus and know him as a person and that is how you become holy. alison: his speech was very powerful, very well done. but in many ways very simplistic. i thought it was interesting that one of the moments that people remember is when he brought up the golden rule. leon: yeah. alison: people jumped to their feet and applauded. we learned as children but it was so powerful to see all these leaders of our country standing up any knowledge and -- and knowledge in. -- acknowledging. >> i think if they did that daily in congress it would be a better place for our country. leon: their reaction was a reaction they did need to be reminded. they admitted themselves they needed to be reminded. alison: so much of what it's -- what he said was so basic evil
4:15 pm
cannot argue. -- people could not argue. he warned against fundamentalism of every kind. he said no religion is immune from ideological delusion. there anding out saying we have to be careful about this stuff. leon: one of the things that keeps striking me is seeing all the young faces out there. we were talking about have on some undergo but the shrieking of the disappearance of the church, and the church is having issues with people leaving. and the church was not growing. it's amazing to see the magnetism he has and how extraordinary it is with these young people. do you think that courses been reversed? >> i think it is incumbent upon us to take up where he left off and continue what he has started as a trend.
4:16 pm
he taught us by example. people fall, with a person, not with ideas. he said that to be bishops and words that were encouraging. he was not scolding the bishops the reminding us we needed be who we are, the good shepherds, axis what he preaches. -- practice what you preach. he said divisive words do not fit the tongue of a shepherd. powerful words to congress today is not harsh or divisive words. he practiced what he preaches. the bishops were encouraged to do the same. help them fall in love with a person. alison: i agree with that. a think there is a special challenge with young people today for a number of reasons. yes, a lot of young people are getting away from organized religion. it's kind of do-it-yourself spirituality. that's a trend in general. we have diversity.
4:17 pm
there are many other things to pick from. i think the young people in particular are so connected and so distracted that they don't have time for reflection. they don't have time for prayer. they don't have time for religion to some degree. i think is incumbent upon the pastors, all the leaders to try to spread the good news and give them a reason to engage again. it's going to be a challenge. ways the way we are distracted by our cell phones and ipads, you name it, that makes these events that much more remarkable. the people have stopped and listened and watched. you have to listen to him speak slowly in his english. people were paying attention. jonathan: in talking with greta, that was one thing i really was struck by. i even said that. doesn't seem that the church
4:18 pm
seems to be seizing up a little bit, closing doors up to the young people? that the numbers are dwindling? he smiled back at me and said it is obviously a concern for us. a lot of the message the public pass along, especially in philadelphia to 1.5 million people, is that the family is so important. he mentioned that in congress today. what parents model for their children transcends the children and they will practice with the parents are talking about. if religion and faith is a big part, perhaps that will carry on. he said to me you're speaking length of the 21st century. we understand there are a lot of broken families out there. even those with faith in god get lost. us, the bishops, the cardinals, all the missionaries to go out and let people know there is room for you whether you have been modeled by it or not.
4:19 pm
voicethat was tom's alerting to us what we are seeing on the screen. the plane beginning to turn around and make its approach to the runway. the pope is about to practice what he preaches on going out. he is about to go out of here from joint base andrews. heading up to new york for another series of historic moments. alison: in addition to the address to the human we know will be visiting ground zero which will be poignant. that will no doubt be a special moment for new yorkers, americans in general. he will be in the ppe opemobile touring around central park. leon: i know the people in the crowds with the walkie-talkies, along with the mayor, they will
4:20 pm
breathe a huge sigh of relief once the plane is off the ground. -- theurity here security demands here have been unprecedented and yet they have gone off without a hitch. reporter: we should really give a big at a boy to all the folks. they've been planning for this anywhere from 8-10 months. it is been nonstop. s withave had huge pow wow all the agencies. leon: that is saying something because this is a region where every single head of state has been to at some point. oft we've seen in terms security demands and the pressures of being completely off the charts. completely unprecedented. alison: we expected terrible gridlock in traffic tieups, and we have seen some but it was not as a lot of people anticipated. leon: can you talk that up to divine intervention? >> i did.
4:21 pm
i think the pope actually blessed the metro. i think you may have. leon: he did not bless the nats. jonathan: there was a great tweak the other day. "is it bad minutes ago lord's name in vain because it was caused by the pope?" [laughter] thomas still standing by. have the people left? or are they still in the stands? reporter: a lot of folks are starting to leave. a lot of people are seeing the take off in the distance but the dignitaries like secretary of state has walked out. as well as the governor of maryland. i do not see the catholic guide notes -- young adults or schoolchildren. i guess most folks are not waiting for the plane to take off. you can probably see it in the distance from where i am at. taxiing and getting ready to
4:22 pm
take off in just a moment. leon: when that plane takes off his trip is ended but your work is really just beginning. thatid something yesterday we did not get a chance to chat about. we were watching yesterdays event and we talked briefly about what happened when you spoke to the bishops that were assembled. he said they will be seminars taught for years to come from some of the things that were said here. what about the challenge of picking up some of those messages? what were some things ever said that will be transformative? >> there was nothing new that he said, but the things he chose to talk about where important reminders to the bishops that they in turn will hand off to the priest. when he said to the bishops about their identity. he said member who you are. you are people of prayer, people who are called to preach, and
4:23 pm
you were called to be shepherds. many people might take it for granted. we spent all of our time praying. things get dizzy and people need to be reminded. your work will not a fruitful unless you begin with prayer as pope francis gave us the example. early in the morning, 4:30, that is when he found the energy to do what he did during the day. when you look at every time he was about again -- begin prayer with the people, he began prayer himself with the lord. he spent time in personal prayer before the mass yesterday. he prayed before so dreading mass with thousands of people. they give us an example of preaching. he gave a wonderful homily for the bishops. while it was not necessarily preaching he taught -- talked to the congress today and he talked about the contents of what he wanted to hand on. dignity of the human person and all the indications.
4:24 pm
-- in vocations. he also told us about the voice in which to offer it. finding that common ground in which we can go forward. in trying to build a better society, finding the common good. he is reminded us we are called to really care for the people entrusted to us as pastors. a good shepherd is one for whom the sheep know his voice. i think he was to be present among people. he wants people to be able to recognize our voice. the voice that preaches god's word in the right tone. it's joy and hope and never divisive. he's often a person that speaks of healing. people are broken and hurting. using -- besides using the words "go out," he talked about being anointed by the spirit.
4:25 pm
often times it's a sign of healing. often times it's the message that god loves us and it's revealed in his desire to heal our wounded and broken hearts. he is a god of consolation, a god of mercy. mercy is really a theme of his preaching that we will be focusing on a lot and upcoming years. december 8. alison: one of the things i was left with from his visit is the feeling like he was reminding america, north america, united states that it is not just about us. there is a big world out there. just because we are americans does not mean we are the best and the brightest on everything. there is the plane taxiing down the runway. american plane is about to take to the air. shepherd one is what i believe
