has more team coverage in just a moment. suzanne kennedy is in new york city with what to expect in the coming hours. reporter: we are just two hours away from the holy father's arrival at st. patrick's cathedral. the streets are shut down. the catholic schoolchildren are lined up. everyone is anxious for the holy father's first stop in new york city. papal preparations underway. the 136-year-old catholic churches where pope francis will hold evening prayers. fifth avenue around the cathedral has been closed down. there is enhanced security throughout the city. >> i think it is fantastic. i think it is going to do absolute wonders for new york city. >> i am catholic so i'm very excited. maketer: the pope will five stops here, including the u.n., ground zero, a harlem school, and mass ride evening at

coming up at 6:00 am of that special invitation in the message that one little boy had for the holy father. leon: maryland governor larry hogan is blessed tonight. the catholic republican governor had a brief meeting at the pontiff's afternoon and during the meeting he received a blessing on the half of all cancer patients. -- on the half of all cancer patients -- behalf of all cancer patients. the pope was as possible for some very positive moments on capitol hill today. reporter: it was history in the making. he met with speaker john boehner for a few minutes and then walked out to -- the gallery was on their feet on both sides of the aisle. a standing ovation. he delivered a message of hope and inspiration in challenged lawmakers to work together. not everyone could get into the chamber's watch the historic moment. hugee west lawn they had a

probably had just enough time to eat. he gets more than peanuts. alison: it was a quick flight. he probably needed to rest and not enough time for that. he has a full schedule ahead in new york city once he touches down. he will be holding the evening prayer service at st. patrick's cathedral this evening. tomorrow morning at 8:30 he will be headed to the united states -- united nations where he will be addressing the general assembly. then he will be taking part in a multi-faith service later in the day. even more importantly is where it will be taking place. that is at ground zero, the 9/11 memorial and museum at the world trade center. he will be visiting some schools in new york and then a huge mass at madison square garden. certainly not a restful trip. it was certainly not restful --e in d.c. bahia, shallot.

but he accomplished a lot. leon: he will be greeted at every turn by lots and lots of young people. some kids there awaiting the flag.lag -- papal we've not seen any other national flag. at least not here at this point in new york. there are a number of bishops awaiting for the plane to make its turnaround. he is in the biggest city that he will be visiting on this trip but it will not be the biggest crowd. the interfaith service will be a big one but they are saying philadelphia, the crowd could theone million people at family's convention he will be participating in. alison: we are waiting for the plane, shot of the plane. he will then be taking one of

these helicopters into manhattan. tothat point heading over perform the prayer service there a little later. will we be seeing a fiat in new york city? leon: that's a good question. i don't know if a fiat could handle the potholes in new york. it'll be interesting to see what he will use up in new york. alison: the popemobile will make an appearance in central park. this will be a little shorter than it was here in washington. about one day in new york. leon: some 200 people got a chance to see pope rance is in person went -- pope francis when he was visiting catholic charities. it was a great seeing. alison: outside thousands more, including a will or two veteran and his son were trying to catch a glimpse. jennifer donelan reports of the paper try to re-create their own brush with history.

arlington. it is gorgeous in alexandria. we had some video from new york in a beautiful there. the weather pattern is about to undergo a change. right now it is comfortable. 75 degrees at belle haven. 79 degrees in frederick. this is probably the warmest day we will have for a while because conditions will change somewhat i tomorrow morning. we will see partly cloudy skies. wake up temperatures on friday at 56 in gaithersburg and columbia. 60 in upper marlboro. a cool start through the day. the clouds will start to increase. it was her to get breezy in the afternoon. 15 miles per hour at times. dry, comfortable, and definitely a all-like day. -- fall-like day.

in the area of low pressure pushing in for the atlantic coast into portions of south carolina and georgia, it is spinning a bit and it will have a tendency to move to the northeast. at the very same time a large pressure of high pressure crossed -- across new england will try to push back into our area. the computer models are not helping as much because they are not in agreement. high-pressure will be out in keeping it really cloudy in driving cool, or will this system win out and have enough speed to go north to give us rain over the weekend? at the very least will be mostly cloudy. highs about 70 degrees. a 30%-40% chance of showers getting here saturday and especially into sunday and in clearing out on monday. because of the convocations of this system, it is not guaranteed. we will get into this pattern where it will be cloudy and breezy. cool as well and less than 50-50

alison: looking live at new york city and pope francis has arrived in new york. he just left d.c. a little over an hour ago and is now preparing for quite a few events in new york city. suzanne kennedy is live there and we will check in with her in just a little while. back at home some other news of the day. investigators in maryland are sifting to rubble to find out why a house exploded. abc 7 was first on the scene after a blast on sleep before slain in columbia. it happened -- sleepy horse lane. an inspector got everyone out of the home and when he was walking back to his car a fiery blast corrupted. >> it shook the whole house. we ran to the front door. we saw flames coming out of the bottom floor. the house was gone and minutes. alison: the fire and blast

impacted all six homes in the row. two people suffered nonlife threatening injuries. leon: a former falls church democratic leader -- marker gardener made it plea while on try for the sexual abuse of a female family number in 2009. he also waited guilty to the listing girls at his daughter summer party in 2011. the plea deal means that gardener will now serve 20 years in prison. the man the fbi dubbed the black cat and it was also going to prison. -- black hat bandit. he was suspected in a string of armed robberies across the area earlier this year. he is facing up to life in prison when sentenced in december. alison: a two-year-old boy is safe after being left in a locked car. his mother is charged with reckless endangerment. it happened in the parking lot at the glen -- courthouse

appreciative. everyone gave him a standing ovation. his message was practice the golden rule, protect each other, protect the family, and protect the planet. then he drove around in his little black fiat. he performed the first canonization in america, elevating a priest to a saint. he did that in front of 25,000 people just outside the basilica. he made so many memories for andle as he made his way walking outside the vatican embassy in rushing over to shake hands and let them experience the pope of close and personal -- up close and personal. he will good to new york and philadelphia are he will be in front of a crowd of more than 1.5 million people. as we have these pictures the pope driving round yesterday, at a great day. the question is how did d.c. do with the popes visit? sam joins us now.
