this is what we're talking about. a glum handshake and this. they're calling it a steely eyed toast. i don't know. they delivered dueling speeches sharply disagreeing on the future of syria's leader. we have more from abc's jonathan carl. >> they're not known for their personal chemistry but obama and putin did get together tonight for their first formal meeting in two years. the face to face was just hours after the two presidents went right at each other on the world stage. obama slamming russia's invasion of crimea. >> we cannot stand by when the sovereignty of a nation is flagrantly violated. >> reporter: and vladimir putin, who likes to play tough guy and literally flex his muscles back home, is now making a move in the middle east, sending russian military equipment and troops to support syrian dictator bashar al assad who putin said today is doing more to fight isis than the united states. "no one," putin said, "but president assad's armed forces and kurdish militia, are truly fighting terrorists in syria."

obama says the opposite. that assad, backed by russia, is himself behind much of the terror. >> when a dictator slaughters tens of thousands of his own people, that is not just a matter of one nation's internal affairs. president obama has said he's willing to work with russia and even iran putin supports is syrian president assad. >> the overwhelming majority of deaths in syria have been attributed to president assad's forces, not isis. jonathan carl, abc news, new york. things could get heated on capitol hill today when the head of planned parenthood testifies for the first time since those secretly recorded videos. cecile richards is expected to tell lawmakers that donation of tissue from aborted fetuses is a minuscule part of its work providing health services for

the vote in three polls. that the debate is october 13th in las vegas. there was quite a scare for travelers heading to ireland last night. an air ling gas jet had to return to jfk airport about 15 minutes after takeoff. the boeing 757 reported landing gear door problems and no flaps. the plane came in faster than normal and its brakes overheated causing a small fire in the landing gear. it was quickly extinguished. >> extreme sports star and tv personality killed in a sky diving accident in california. eric, ronner died after striking a tree. he was part of the group plating in the opening ceremony of a goal of event. witnesses say he slammed hard into a tree about 30 feet off the ground. once he was brought down, he was pronounced dead at the scene. the daughter of paul walker is suing porsche over the deadly scent accident that claimed her

father's life. he was killed two years ago when the porsche he was riding in crashed and burst into flames. his daughter claims the car suffereded from numerous design detects including safe guars to protect the people inside. she is seeking unspecified damages from porsche. >> turning our focus to the weather and the deep south will see more heavy rain to send the month. we're seeing some of this extreme weather's impact. a mudslide in western north carolina destroyed a parking lot. the tons of mud and pavement narrowly missing a homeless veteran living on the property. he heard a noise, grabbed belongings and fled. there are no reports of vehicles being damaged, as well. as much as eight inches fell in mobile, alabama causing significant damages to homes and apartments and even a college dorms. many roads and, paing lots flooded. more rain expected in the gulf region again today.
