>> not to be forgotten. yesterday's storms, just the flooding. not the flooding but we had strong downpours, very strong winds. you are looking at if damage done in maurel. is it a mess. brad bell joining us from frederick which had flooding damage. the weather service determined the storms we saw. straight line winds or very strong winds? what happened? >> laurel looks like straight line winds. i want to explain why we're in frederick. look at this garage. this is where the floodwaters got to last night. a problem here. big problem acontrol the street at the ymca. they are throwing out the furniture from the daycare. water was the problem here. in frederick it was the wind. the winds came through and they were centered in the interselection of 197-1978.

matthew back in charlottesville courtroom for two previle hearings. he is accused of raining and killing college students morgan harrington and hannibal. -- hannah graham. stay with abc7 for developments on the story. another attempted abduction in arlington. last night before 10:30. a man tried to pull a woman in the bushes. she screamed. the guy ran off. police are not confirming this is related to that of yet. we are looking into this and have a light report on "abc7 news at 5:00". alison: convicted killer alprito making an appeal to save his life. a federal judge issued temporary restraining order against the state according to a dispatch report. there will be another hearing tomorrow ahead of the

scheduled execution. he is already on death row in california when the d.n.a. evidence linked him through the 1988 murder of a couple in virginia. jonathan: there is a last minute appeal to safe the man of a man in oklahoma. richard glossip scheduled to die this afternoon but the supreme court is weighing in so it has been put on hold. he has been convicted to death for ordering the killing of his boss. the pope, actors and activists and 250,000 moveon.org petitioners supporting this stay of execution. alison: a live oak at the capitol for you where the house will elect a leadership to replace john boehner october 8. right now the house is getting ready to vote on a spending bull to avoid a shutdown. they are cutting it close with the midnight deadline.

doug: this is moving south. let's talk about what will happen with the short-term. this one is going to get only so far off the coast and get stationary. it will stop the movement in this position and this is going to create problems for us in the next few days. future cast shows more rain coming in, not tomorrow morning but by the average and the evening hours. the front will come backwards and move west. this is potential for all kind of rain developing on friday, friday night and saturday. this is before the effect from the hurricane. so heavy rain through saturday

southwest and is expected to make a turn and head north. so until it makes a surge and heads up the coast, it's uncertain. hopefully in the next 48 hours we'll get an idea. weather wall. the top winds are 85-mile-per-hour. new update from the hurricane center coming out shortly. it could stay out to sea totally or making landfall of the carolina on new jersey. so as far as what wi know now, we think it will make landfall and then narrow down where it is. so it take a little bit. almost all operational models make it for a u-turn and have it heading north. this is the center line. there is a chance here as out

jonathan: yet another jury duty scam. calls claiming you missed jury duty. alison: how do you respond to these? it could cost you. john matarese shows what to do and not to do so you don't waste your money. john: we all know what a jury duty summons means. it means you have to report to court under penalty of the law. what if someone calls and says you missed the summons and you face arrest? stim was stepping out of the car and the cell rang. >> the guy said excuse me are you tim overmeyer? i said yes. that is my name. >> he said i'm the sheriff and i'm issuing you a warrant for your arrest for skipping jury duty. >> uh-oh he thought. he might have missed the let every because he cently moved. >> the caller asked for his birth date and the social

security number to confirm the identity. john: he said he thought the call was real. i was a live person and not a recording. the person spoke perfect english and seemed to know what they were talking about. >> he said, sir, if you don't give me the information i'm going to send a cruiser to your house and arrest you. >> at that point he was so shaken he hung up. good thing. when he called the sheriff department he found out he almost fell victim to i.d. theft scam. the local sheriff offices and the jury commissioners say they never call anyone threatening arrest. nor do they send e-mails. that is another scam. a real jury summons comes with a letter like this followed by a second letter. who was it? >> i googled number and nothing comes up. >> likely a scammer using a device to change the aer i.d. ready to go after their next victim. don't ignore jury duty but be skeptical of calls saying you are late or you missed so it you don't waste your money.

i'm john matarese, abc7 news. announcer: from abc7 news, this is a breaking news alert. alison: the breaking news is from the national hurricane center. we are learning that the hurricane updates are there on joaquin. tonight the weather service is surveying the damage in laurel. let's get to doug hill who is watching joaquin. doug: it's cloudy and breezy. we will take that because we have to see what will happen with the storm. show you details on the latest update of the hurricane center stilt has the track southwest moving from the atlantic ocean to the bahamas but it is expected to make a uturn to the right to head back up the coast. as far as the numbers go, the top winds are 85 miles per hour. gusting to 105. moving southwest at 8 but it is expected to make the turn.
