"world news now." >> and we do say hello to everyone on this friday. it is a very sad friday for many across this country. paying attention to all the developments that are happening in oregon. that's where we'll begin on this half hour. the shock and grief. yet another american school shattered by deadly gun violence. >> we're learning this morning the gunman allegedly singled out christians in a classroom at umpqua community college. one survivor told her dad the shooter asked them about their religion before opening fire on christians one by one. >> by the time it was over, ten people were dead including the gunman and seven others were wounded. >> the sheriff is so angry he's vowing never to utter the shooter's name saying he's not going to give him the credit for the act that was so horrific. >> more now from abc's neal carlin ski reporting from the campus in roseburg, oregon. >> reporter: 10:30 a.m., the frantic calls started coming in.

an active shooter on the rural oregon campus. >> copy, active shooter at ucc, 1140 umpqua college road. >> reporter: within minutes, students inside umpqua community college were tweeting their terror. "oh, my god, there's someone shooting on campus," tweeted one. "students are running everywhere. holy god." >> my teacher came running in and only told us to get inside the teacher's office and get down as fast as we could and drop everything. >> must be terrifying. >> oh, it was. it was horrifying. and being locked in there and not knowing if my friends were okay, i, of course, was bawling my eyes out. >> 1174 medical aide, this is for an active shooter at ucc. >> reporter: emergency vehicles flooded the scene. radio traffic indicates the shooter was still firing. >> this is going to be the synder hall. somebody is outside one of the doors, shooting through the door. >> reporter: amber adams is a student at the school. >> shots were being fired. we heard shots and immediately took cover.

went down and heard just multiple shots going off. a lot of screaming. >> reporter: lori risner, another student, describes chaos. >> a lady just went running by me, crying, saying, there's an active shooter on campus. everybody get into this hallway. >> reporter: authorities saying the 20-year-old male shooter engaged in a shoot-out with police before being shot dead. >> code 4. suspect is down. >> our number one priority right now is to make sure that the scene is secure and the victims are treated and that we continue to make sure that there are no additional threats. >> reporter: students could be seen being led out of the school, their bags being checked by police. canine units sweeping the campus. investigators establishing crime scenes. the college of about 3,000 students is in a rural area, about 180 miles south of portland. and it took some time for emergency officials to make sense of the scope of the carnage.

the injured arrive on stretchers. >> the work that first responders have done is harrowing. >> on the campus, students hugging, scenes of incredible grief. >> in the coming days we'll learn about the victims, young men and women who were studying and learning and working hard and their eyes set on the future, their dreams on what they could make of their lives. and america will wrap everyone who is grieving with our prayers and our love. >> reporter: this is a town in grieving. the gunman, we expect to learn a lot more about him in the hours and days ahead. neal karlinksky, abc news, roseburg, oregon. >> those scenes there from a late night candlelight vigil that was held. we're now hearing from the gunman's family, apparently just as stunned as everyone else is about the shooting. >> mercer's step sister said the news left her shaking. she described him as a nice guy who put everyone before himself. the word of mercer's involvement

also took a dad by surprise. >> obviously, it's been a devastating day. devastating for me and my family. shocked. shocked is all i can say. okay? >> shocked. i can't imagine a father getting that type of word and the fact that he had such a good reputation apparently with his family. >> yeah, but you wonder if there were any signs that they knew. his dad, by the way, lives in southern california. of course, mercer lived in oregon. so definitely shocking. you can hear it in his voice. this is the 15th time this incident that president obama has hato make a statement following a mass shooting, and he was visibly angry and frustrated as he spoke about the incidents of gun violence in america happening all too often. and he said we've now become numb to it. >> earlier this year, i answered a question in an interview by saying the united states of america is the one advanced nation on earth in which we do not have the sufficient common

sense gun safety laws even in the face of repeated mass killings. and later that day, there was a mass shooting at a movie theater in lafayette, louisiana, that day. somehow, this has become routine. >> the president took on the gun lobby directly appealing to american gun owners to think about whether their views are properly being represented. and a national guard specialist who helped take down a gunman on a paris bound train says he wishes he could have been there to help. >> we're talking about alek skarlatas who is studying for a career in law enforcement at ucc and is a contestant currently on "dancing with the stars." he was in rehearsals when he got word of the massacre. he sent out a tweet offering condolences and headed home to offer support for his school. >> stay with abc news for continuing coverage of this tragedy in oregon. >> we'll have more updates later

on this hour and on "america this morning." we move onto the major hurricane that is working its way north in the atlantic ocean right now. the latest forecast is good news for millions of people. joaquin will stay out to sea, not making landfall in the u.s. but this category 4 storm could still bring heavy rain, strong winds and heavy surf to the east coast. a state of emergency already declared in several states and residents filling sandbags to prevent flooding. w jersey isn't taking chances with this. the governor also declaring a state of emergency. the memories of the destruction from superstorm sandy three years ago all too fresh. even if joaquin stays out to sea, flooding and beach erosion are likely particularly along the jersey shore. officials also expect high winds to damage trees and knock out power. >> let's get the latest on the path of the hurricane from justin povick. morning to you. >> thanks and good morning to you. joaquin still very powerful now beginning to churn its way off

people dead, including the gunman. witnesses say the shooter deliberately targeting christians when he opened fire inside a classroom at umpqua community college. hundreds of people gathered last night to remember the victims. the gunman has been identified as 26-year-old chris harper mercer. this tragedy took center stage among the presidential hopefuls. hillary clinton wasting no time in attacking the nra calling for a national gun control movement. bernie sanders he went a step further calling for improvement in mental health services and on the republican side, ben carson criticized the reaction for more gun laws focusing instead of mental health. donald trump told "the washington post," "it sounds like another mental health problem." >> trump in the meantime is sounding off against two of his republican rivals yet again, jeb bush and marco rubio. >> he's apparently taking a new hard line position on the syrian refugees. here's abc's tom llamas.
