group of biden supporters is out now hoping to convince the vice president to run. >> you're on the cusp of some of the most asston issue? ing breakthroughs in the history of mankind. >> reporter: for republicans dr. ben carson continues to defend his remarks suggesting the victims of the oregon campus massacre could have done more and advocating a lets roll strategy. those words echoing back to 9/11's flight 93. >> from the indications i got, they did not rush the shooter. the shooter can only shoot one person at a time. he cannot shoot a whole group of people. >> but carson didn't seem to know about chris mints, the army veteran who did in fact rush the shooter saving lives. carson now says mints dollars exactly what should be done. the countdown is onto the first democratic debate and joe biden may not be there. his decision whether to run could stretch to the end of this month with the first filing deadline to appear on a ballot november 6th.

kendis and marci. >> brandi hitt reporting from los angeles for us. in the garden state, firefighters had their hands full with an intense tanker truck fire on the new jersey turnpike. police say the truck struck a honda vrv, flipping over a guardrail and erupted into flames. the driver of that tanker truck was killed. the driver of the hon dab suffered only minor injuries. a potentially crippling strike at fiat chrysler factories across the country has been averted. 40,000 workers had been set to walk off the job at midnight but negotiators for both sides reached a new contract just in the nick of time. the uaw tweeted it secured significant gains over the last proposal. and the chicago cubs are moving in on baseball's playoffs. they're moving ahead after beating the pirates last night. the cubs got things started quickly scoring a run in the top of the first. same batter though.

officers, one tv show had a lot to do with their choice of career. >> adam 12 went off the air four decades ago, but its co-star recently passed away. so los angeles police were inspired to pay tribute in a special way. kabc's rob hayes has the story. >> reporter: lapd memorial services sadly are not rare events but what is rare is when the department mourns the death of an officer who was never an officer. >> 4,000 block. >> actor martin milner became a household name playing officer pete malloy. the show "adam 12." >> 1 adam 12. >> miller died last month at the age of 3. hundreds packed the auditorium
