northern virginia bureau chief jeff goldberg stepped out of the courtroom. what did he have to say? jeff: it happened at 2:30 in the afternoon unexpectedly. the witness was compose and he talked about the shooting he received when he was on his way home from a doctor's appointment. he said he received the call from a neighbor who said, ":has been an incident in your house. you need to get home right away." he was asked if anyone had problems with his wife. she had no enemies he answered. he said they were married nearly 37 years and met in alexandria in elementary school. and she lived on the street her entire life. without -- it was not uncommon

for people to come and go from the home. but he did not know ron kirby. he knew nancy dunn. because the children attended the preschool. this is a key to the prosecution contention that charles severance targeted member of the system and wanted to convince violence against them. the defense attorneys did not ask any questions at all of norm lodato. before he took the stand we heard from investigators who were looking at the crime scene following the shooting and the particular evidence they discovered while looking at that scene. we will have more on that coming up at 5:00. until then, live in fairfax, jeff goldberg, abc7 news. jonathan: thank you very much, jeff. developing this afternoon, three police involved shootings in less than 24 hours. alison: two in d.c., one in

maryland. the one in d.c. involved a shoot-out with the mpd officers. stephen tschida is live with more on this. stephen: police opened fire twice in a matter of hours. this is where i'm standing there was an incident. an officer pulled someone over. at some point police say the person was pulled out a gun and took aim at the officer. the officer pulled his service weapon and opened fire. the suspect took off in the vehicle and crashed a couple of blocks away and took off on foot. a couple of hours later, someone walked into a hospital with a bullet wound. that individual was arrested. last night, a similar situation played out. a suspect shot an officer and the officer shot back but that individual got away. >> it's uncalled for. it is.

it's uncalled for. stephen: the individual took off on foot in southeast d.c. the search remained on for him. charges are pending. they haven't been worked out. we don't have an i.d. on the suspect yet. reporting live, stephen tschida, abc7 news. jonathan: thank you. the other shooting was columbia, maryland, where the police confronted a man in cardinal lane. shelly is joining us live from columbia. why were the police called to the scene in the first place today? shelly: well, jonathan, officers received a 911 call around 10:40 this americaning. the caller telling police that a man with a knife was inside his home threatening to kill

him. when they arrived, the man was in the driveway. they said he refused to drop the knife and he advanced on the officers. that's when one fired on him and killed him. they searched the home after the shooting and say no other people were inside. officers responded to the home and they were confronted with a man with a knife in driveway. the man approached him. they directed him repeatedly to drop the knife. he refused. one of the officer was forced to fire his weapon. the police are still on the scene and they will open this road to traffic within minutes. the man's identity is not released and the officer is an eight-year veteran with the department and he has been placed on routine administrative leave while this is investigated. reporting live in columbia, abc7 news.

alison: you can get updates away from the the by going to wjla.com. jonathan: a d.c. police officer is in trouble. he is facing assault charges after investigators say he got in a fight with an employee at cell phone store wednesday night in northeast. the store worker said that he made inappropriate comments to his girlfriend who also worked in the store. alison: in the district. a big weekend planned. we have the taste of d.c. it marks the 20th verse of the million man march on the national mall. all the preparation has been underway for days. what did they say at the news conference today? sam: they had a lot of things to say. we will look at some of them.

i was going to say this is not a million man march. in is a march for everybody this time. they are not expecting a million people to be coming here. but the people here are gathering, socializing, listening to music and getting ready for tomorrow's big day. on the west front of the u.s. capitol, organizers and workers are busy getting ready for tomorrow's 20th anniversary march. october 1995, men came from coast to coast and packed the national mall left-hand by louis farrakhan. he was criticized by many then and this time slammed for a march called justice forever. >> let's see what mr. farrakhan has to say. sam: in a news conference they raised the issue of interim news conference from the capitol police that accused

farrakhan of inciting violence and that there are concerns that the second march may not be as peaceful. they met with the nation of islam about it. >> the chief decided to issue an apology. sam: march attenders arrive to mark the ceremony. it will involve the full day. there is concern to the nation of islam authorities and police are called from the anti-muslim group for protesters to come to area mosques in d.c. in this case, muhammad said to the marchers here do not come with any guns, no alcohol, and don't come with large bags or containers because he says it

"paul." we know him as paul ryan. all the talking about the candidate and paul ryan's name keeps popping up. it's not clear if he will seek the speaker nomination. this is video you saw first on "good morning, washington." who men cited after crashing a drone in the white house. jeanette reyes with the video and the story. jeanette: authorities of a drone. authorities scrambling trying to find it. now we know who is responsible for it. the cameras were rolling as the exhausting and the tedious one-hour search was underway for the drone the size of a small bird. it crashed landed after the operator lost control. witnesses helped locate it. it happened at 1:30 this morning. the u.s. park police were told by the secret service about the illegal drone activity on the south lawn of the white house. he was detained on 15th and east street northwest and

fined $85. >> around 1:20, the united states park police received an alert from the secret service about the drones flying in the area of the washington monument. the park police were able to locate howard sullivan iii in possession of a black remote control. that was in control of the drone. jeanette: it happens more than you think. this year alone it happened the nine times, this is the ninth time. it happened 26 times since 2013. that is just the case documented by the u.s. park police. moving forward i ask them if there are plans to make this, the consequences more severe. they tell me there aren't any plans. however, they are working with the f.a.a. to get the message out there that this is illegal in the district. jeanette reyes, abc7 news. jonathan: coming up, an exclusive one-on-one interview with republican candidate alessandro --

alison: "7 on your side" getting results after unfinished utility work. jonathan: unfinished because the work left a hole in 35th street northeast. we got a call from a viewer wanting something done. item investigator chris papst took a look and got good news for the neighborhood. this is 35th street in northeast d.c. when they did this work for some reason, this patch of road was never completed.

it has been like this for a year. when people come by here, they swerve out of the way. a couple of neighbors we spoke to, the vehicles were damaged. you see how the car has a side view mirror tilted in. other vehicles just come through here. they do a classic thump-thump. it feels like your car is being rattled because this right here, this is about a two-inch drop in this street. here comes the car right here. you will be able to see. he is swerving out of the way. trying not to go into this ditch too far. after a year of calling washington gas the neighbors called out to "7 on your side." this is one woman we spoke to said today. >> when you hit it, the car rocks. i rocks -- it rocks and creeks. we're doing damage. chris: we will tell you how washington gas responded minutes after we made the phone call. this has been like this for a year. the guys are now here to do something about it.

the accident took place this morning. the driver was pronounced dead on the scene and has not been identified. there was only one witness. that person was depriving on the beltway and called 911 when they saw the truck go over the side wall. as a result, suitland parkway was closed for more than six hours affecting the morning rush hour. in prince george's county, suzanne kennedy, abc7 news. jonathan: check on the traffic situation this afternoon. robertrobert altman keeping an e on thing. from the picture it looks like they are moving. robert: a few moments ago. all lanes reopened. the inbound side was shut down this morning. outbound was closed for 112 hours and now reopened. we are looking at slow traffic around the region. look at the beltway. this starts on the inner loop to 66 and 270. and 202. all the way out of virginia to

montgomery county. prince george's county continuing out through the area up i-95. southbound 95 is jammed up solid. leaving the area of woodbridge, dale city through fredericksburg. northbound 130 in fredericksburg, it continues. outbound 66 through the metro toward the area route 28 in centreville.

devon: hagerstown getting the heavier rain. there is a creep next to the showers. next up is fredericksburg. charlestown and winchester and loudoun county as well. leesburg, we'd get the heavier showers in the forecast. looking ahead to temperatures we have reached 80 degrees. maybe the cloud cover and the sprinkle activity we wouldn't get there. we had the clouds. the sprinkle activity. what we are tracking here is the movement in the showers and the storms closer to washington. what we are seeing is movement at 30 miles per hour. it is 80 miles away. puts them here in two hours at 6:00.

families from umpqua community college shooting. >> as presidents obama arrives in oregon this afternoon, the white house says he will be focused on traumatized survivors and the grieving families he is there to meet privately. the nine killed in last week's massacre at a community college. but just hours before his troop -- >> an emergency call. one dead, three others wounded in shooting overnight near a dorm at northern arizona university in flagstaff. >> this is not a formal day. >> the 18-year-old gunman a freshman now in custody opened fire and a fight escalated. >> two separate student groups got in a confrontation. it turned physical. >> while president obama is not expected to discuss gun control in oregon the staff is looking what he can use the

executive actions to expand the background checks without waiting for congress to act. most say the focus should be on mental health. today, dr. ben carson is defending his recent suggestion that part of the solution to mass shootings could be more guns. >> do we need mechanism in schools or other places where you can defend yourself? should we have trained people there? i have no objection to that at all. >> there have been ten school shootings this year. in arizona, place have not said what led to deadly fight. in northwest, abc7 news. jonathan: on the issue of gun control we heard from presidential candidate ben carson. he had a lot to say. a controversial comment people are taking issue with. he said with the hol cast and guns in jews, he said 6 million jews would not have been slaughtered if they had guns and had a chance to

defend themselves. abc7 got exclusive access to dr. carson this afternoon and got to press him on the issues and a few others. >> i don't think it's controversial at all. what i said is that before tyranny can take hold, the tyrants generally disarm the people. and that happened in germany as well. >> dr. carson standing by his comments suggesting that 6 million jews would not have been slaughtered if they had had access to guns. the candidate for president saying the media is blowing this out of proportion. >> the press has an agenda. that question is a perfect example of it. taking something that most americans understand what i'm talking about and trying to make it into a controversy. jonathan: abc7 also asked carson about the comments about arming teachers in schools.

test next month to see if the treatment was successful. in a facebook post he said he is excited to beat the defense minister and work hard and change maryland for the better. howard county teacher under arrest after a sting operation. richard kemp was arrested for prostitution and sexual solicitation of a minor in montgomery county. he is an english teacher in howard high school at glenelg high school. a letter was sent home to parents yesterday explaining the situation. a long-term substitute will take over kemp's class. jonathan: developing story now. the national transportation safety board is examining the sister ship of the cargo ship that zapping in hurricane joaquin. el unique arrived yesterday. in the meantime, three el faro former crew members say that the ship never should have been out on the water. a former quarter master says that the chief cook's room was constantly leaking water and the ship's drainage didn't work very well. >> all that we do is mask the problem. we paint over rust.

jonathan: must-see news. folks in ohio are freaked out by hall bean display. a -- halloween display. this body upazoid dune, this one nailed to a cross and this is nailed to a pole. they freaked out kids in the neighborhood in spirit of halloween. neighbors are not happy by it. they are bothered how graphic the display is. this house is a block from elementary school. a lot of the kids are too scared to go by the house now. >> i felt scared because i thought they were real people. >> shock. you take a double take because it's very realistic display. jonathan: city officials are weighing in saying there is nothing they can do about this because it's freedom of expression. the homeowners were asked and they were nice about it. they said they didn't realize the display was so upsetting. they didn't mean to frighten children. alison: they didn't know it

alison: wow! you might remember this scene. february 16. mount carbon, west virginia, a train carrying dozen of cars filled with crude oil derailed. then the huge fire. i burned for days. now the ntsb says the tracks

alison: montgomery county toys for tots campaign said there may be no give-away for children in the county unless someone steps forward to help right away. "7 on your side" horace holmes explains. horace: he has a lot of toys. >> left over from last year. horace: a big problem on his hands. >> i have been to burtonsville and silver spring. horace: but he hasn't been able to find what the montgomery county toys for tots needs. awareness. >> i'm worried. >> it's october and they should have already been collecting toys for the give-away at christmas. >> the children, you can see them. let me loose in a candy store and instead you can have all you want. horace: these are pictures from last year give- away. it was filled with toys and people. the owners of the warehouse

decided not to make it available this year. even though toys for tots has been frantically looking for another, they had no luck. >> we need a warehouse yesterday. horace: right now they only have a small rented locker at the germantown storage facility. the toys for tots would love to have a permanent warehouse so they would haven't to go through it every year but that is down the road. the focus is on this year and a place to store and distribute toys for kids this christmas. >> we don't have a place to go this year, that means that there would be no toys for tots in montgomery county for children. >> in germantown, horace holmes, abc7 news. jonathan: be nice to see them get the help they need. alison: absolutely. jonathan: they need it from now until the end of december. if you can donate the space or if you know someone who has space to do it, give them a call. it is tax deductible, by the way. alison: great organization. jonathan: it is. alison: still to come at "abc7 news at 5:00" today -- a frederick woman seeing red.

at 5:00 -- our small stretch of summer is ending in a summer-like fashion with the possibility of thunderstorms tonight. meteorologist devon lucie on storm watch for us. devon: the heftiest storms well north/northeast of washington. that is where we have severe thunderstorm warnings, watches from new jersey. if you watch the heavier showers north/northwest of winchester, martins burg, they close in on the metro. those are expected to flop through in the heavier thunderstorm but this is still a ways away. so live 7 doppler radar, it's west of washington. the hev heaviest storms north and west. we have the rain sliding slowly. frederick, the main moving through. we haven't seen lightning. heavy rain extends to charlestown. winchester has the rain moving in as well. as this moves out, expect heavier storms to fire. temperatures because we're right around 80 degrees.
