questions. norm ledado took the stand at 2:30. when he did everyone in court sat up. everybody's focus intensifying knowing he was going to speak. norm was calm and composed. recalling the moment found out that something was terribly wrong. he describes getting a call from a neighbor who said there was an incident at your house and you need to get home right away. he rushed home to find police everywhere. when asked about their history, he said they had been married nearly 37 years, meeting in alexandria at elementary school. ruthann lived on their street for her entire life. she was a well-known and well-loved music teacher for years norm said. she had no enemies. he also testified that ruthann's father and brother are judges in alexandria, which is key to the prosecution contention that charles severance hated members of the system and

wanted to commit violence against them. today we heard from authorities that investigated the shooting. officer patrick lennon holding up a bloody shirt recovered from the home. testifying also that he discovered intact .22-caliber bullet in the kitchen and living room as well as bullet fragments. also a police sur jent who rode with her to the ambulance before airlifted to the hospital center and she was gasping for air, moaning as if she was in severe pain. we also heard from investigators who said they found no d.n.a. evidence or fingerprints of charles severance at the lodado home. perhaps the prosecution wanting to underscore to jurors that there will be no d.n.a. or fingerprints connecting austin stephanos to any of the three -- connecting charles severance to any of the three murders. we saw a very unusual piece of evidence brought in the courtroom. more on that at 6:00, until

then live in fairfax, jeff goldberg, abc7 news. alison: okay, jeff. see you at 6:00. thank you. two police departments investigating three different police involved shootings in the last 24 hours. one this morning in howard county. the other, two, in the district. early this morning and late last night. stephen tschida live at one of those scenes along bladensburg road northeast. stephen: who police-involved shootings. one in southeast and the other here on bladensburg road this morning. one suspect is in custody. that is when a man with a bullet wound showed up at a hospital. other suspect remains at large. two times within hours d.c. police opened fire on suspects. one of them apparently took a bullet. in both incidents, police say the suspect pulled guns on the officers. >> terrible, terrible, that's terrible. stephen: the first incident went down in southeast d.c. 9:30 last night. while police chased a suspect they say he turned and opened

fire. one of the officers shot back. the suspect got away. the officers did recover a couple of guns. >> even here, innocent people could have been hurt. stephen: before 1:00, northeast d.c., in a traffic stop on bladensburg road, a suspect pulled a gun. police say he took aim at the officer. the officer pulled his service weapon and fired. the suspect pulled off and crashed a couple of blocks away. then fled on foot. a while later a man walked into an emergency room with a bullet wound in his arm. police arrested him. meanwhile, along bladensburg road today some residents are anxious for a slowdown in the number of shootings. >> it's become so common. stephen: police say they did recover a gun, apparently in vehicle of the suspect who took off on food.

now that suspect that was apprehended does face assaulting an officer. charges with the other suspect from southeast d.c., the search for him continues tonight. reporting live, stephen tschida, abc7 news. leon: thank you. also one man is dead following a police involved shooting in columbia, maryland. this was shortly before 11:00 this morning. officers were called to a home where they were threatening someone with a knife. the officer shot and killed him when he refused to drop the knife. the man's name has not been released. leon: one person is dead and two others in custody after a shatting near texas state university this an. this came less than 24 hours after another shooting at northern arizona university claimed the lay of a man from maryland. diane gallagher has more. >> this is too much. this isn't true. >> it's going to happen. diane: just before 1:30 friday morning, 189-year-old freshman -- an 18-year-old freshman shot four students at

arizona university after an argument in a parking lot. one of the students died. the campus police chief called it'slated incident but -- >> prohibit anyone carrying guns on campus. the arizona law allows you to have a gun in your car in a locked compartment on campus. but that is where it has to stay. die yang: a second deadly shooting happened friday near texas southern university. that as president obama was on his way to roseburg, oregon, where eight days ago a 26-year-old student shot and killed nine people at umpqua community college before killing himself. >> i don't think he should be here. diane: some there protested the visit because of president obama's call for gun control in the aftermath of recent mass shooting. >> this is a mental health issue. a young man screaming out for help. slipped through the cracks. this is not a gun issue or a political issue. diane: andy parker whose daughter was shot and killed on live tv in august

disagrees. >> every country in the world has people with mental health. we have the market cornered on people with mental health issues that can have access to guns. that is the common denominator. diane: the white house says the president's visit is intended to comfort the survivors and the families. leon: abc7 cameras on the scene this morning when a drone landed on ellipse near the white house. secret service agents and the park police officers there fanned out to investigate after it land and they found howard solomon iii of b.c. saying he was trying to take picture of the washington monument when the winds carried the drone across the street. police confiscated the zone and slapped him with $85 fine. alison: meanwhile, down the street on the ill, a bit of leadership almost bow, to -- leadership limbo. the republican party in search of a speaker of the house. the heir apparent dropped out of the race and the push appears to be on to draft another person for the

position. >> paul ryan answered the call when he was asked by mitt romney to be vice president. i believe he is going home to soul search with his family about whether or not he can in fact accept the job, a job he doesn't want, he isn't seeking but is seeking him. alison: house republicans did meet this morning to discuss the next steps. congressman kevin mccarthy who dropped out yesterday who said that he thinks congressman ryan would make, "a great speaker." as you might imagine the leadership limbo is fueling comments online. congressman tweeted "music blaring in the house gym. another one bites the dust." as the colleagues exercise i suggested they consider another song." and another tweet was the race in the house is more riveting and unpredictable and bloody than "shark week." that prompted the former maryland lieutenant governor and head of the republican national committee to reply, "at least the sharks know what

they are doing." leon: 20 years ago this month the million man march enveloped the nation's capitol organizers plan to follow that up with the justice or else march. and sam ford joins us live with a look at others planning a return trip of their own. hi, sam. sam: hello, leon. the music is loud down here as they are getting ready. for many, the million man march 20 years ago was a unique historical event that can never be repeated. but it is different this time. it's not a million man march but it is for everyone. it is expected not to be as big. but to have a lot of meetings for the many people who will attend this time. >> the people preparing for tomorrow's march came from many walks of life? some were member of the men in the 1995 at the first million

brutal chemotherapy schedule she launched a crusade to get the nfl to expand the program. >> that is what it boils down to. not being against color pink and breast cancer but every type of cancer needs awareness and research and the money. reporter: she hopes the nfl will hear her plea. why couldn't each team for instance take on a different color ribbon and take a different type of cancer and build awareness. reporter: our calls to the nfl about the topic were not return. she meanwhile has taken to the web. hoping professional football can tackle all cancers for what she calls a win-win. in frederick county, abc7 news. alison: well, the self-proclaimed fat guy across america has made it to the east coast. eric heights who weighed 567 pounds when his wife left him. he was 40 years old. he was unemployed. he decided to mike across the country to win his wife back

and lose some weight. well, he started riding in massachusetts in early june and has lost 70 pounds. he also won his wife back. she met him in rhode island last month and joined him on the ride. leon: all right. alison: all working out. leon: left quite a bit of halftimes in rhode island -- bit of himself in rhode island. looking good. alison: congratulations. >> inspiration from a tom hanks film from way back then. we are tracking the possibility of storms coming in. the latest indications are we should see the storms explode like doppler radar. heaviest storms from the north/northeast. thunderstorm warning earlier. severe thunderstorm watch in new jersey. this is usually the case in some setup. once the showers move out of the blue ridge, start to sea them explode moving in the warmer, humid air. from now until 6:30 we will closely watch what is going on northwest of washington.

alison: we got complaints of unfinished work. chris papst has more. reporter: hours after "7 on your side" reached out to washington gas asking why the street was not fully prepared after the maintenance work was done a year ago those guys show up to fully repair. this sound is too familiar.

a year ago washington gas did work on the street. never finished. this part of the road was left as a hole. >> when did it get hit? >> a few months ago. somebody was avoiding that. >> the neighbors say they contacted washington gas and nothing was getting done. chris: to try to get some help, she contacted us during a phone bank and we contacted washington gas on her behalf. minutes later this man arrived in the neighborhood with signs saying fix the street as scheduled. >> that was fast. >> really fast. if you need help call "7 on

"7 on your side." leon: he walked away from a senior picnic three weeks ago today. tonight, friends and family are still holding out home that he is out there somewhere safe. horace holmes is in upper marlboro tonight where the family is gathered for a vigil right now. horace: we are at watkins park. this is the last place he was seen three weeks ago.

every day since he disappeared his family has come out here, searched the entire park. right now friends are joining them to pray. >> it's more than three weeks than michelle is scared for her father's sake. >> i am just hoping that we will find him safe. our life has been turned upside down. >> from the center where he lived. known as l.p., he is 80 years old and he suffers from dementia, his family doesn't know where he is. phipps moved in the woodmore assisted living home in upper marlboro shortly after he moved here from the united states virgin islands five years ago. employees at the facility took him and other residents to elder picnic in watkins park three weeks ago. his daughter says he asked to go to bathroom while there. >> it seems that the person sitting there with him didn't look to see which direction he was going.

and didn't escort him. horace: he hasn't been seen since then. but the family and friends have searched the area around the park and the assisted living center. they have gone from rural to d.c. to find him and get answers. >> we check here every day here at washington park, every day. he can be anywhere at this point. and we're just asking people to keep an eye out and keep looking for him. >> so if you will, take another close look at this picture. his family says he is out there somewhere. he has been missing for three weeks. we have talked to the assisted living center where he was staying. brought him out here to the park. they had no comment today. reporting live in upper marlboro, horace holmes, abc7 news. alison: thank you. a special tribute in the skies today to honor our nation's veterans. the 17 world warii-era

aircraft took part in what is called the potomac flight. flew over the potomac river. the flight took the aircraft over the pentagon and arlington national cemetery. this special event is part of the pepco airfest that kicks off tomorrow. leon: if you are ready for the metro stations to close over the weekend. they will be closing after midnight tonight. they will be reopening on monday morning. that is not the only change to deal with on the rails. the system will open up at 5:00 on sunday morning to help people get in the miler. on monday the trains will run on saturday schedule between 5:00 a.m. and midnight. the parking is free on columbus day. if four-wheel transportation is more your style, check this out. they may have the model for you. they unveiled a car made

birthday. lined up around the world to honor. alison: bill cosby testified under oath for the first time since mounting allegation of sexual abuse. the embattled comedian gave a deposition today in a california courtroom. brandi hitt has the latest. brandi: bill cosby ordered to answer questions on camera and under oath. the comedic television star is deposed today about allegation he sexually abused judy in the playboy mansion in 1970's when she was 15. >> the lawsuit is moving forward. alison: this is part of a civil lawsuit against cosby. more than 15 women who has come forward to accuse him of drugging and sexually assaulting them.

he has never been charged with a crime. cosby's lawyers call this an unmerited unsupported 40-year-old claim. >> this is something i didn't think could happen to me. just knowing there are others out there. there was another civil suit that claiming she was assaulted by the playboy mansion in 2008. she may pursue criminal charges. >> she is squarely within the statue of limitations. >> this isn't cosby's first deposition either. in documents released from a 2005 civil lawsuit cosby admitted to obtaining quaaludes to give to women. that case was settled out of court. >> malcolm jamal warner who played his son said the allegations tarnished the hit series legacy. bill cosby's deposition location is kept secret and the content will be sealed until december and a judge
