maureen: lots of emotion on the witness stand today at the trial of accused serial killer. this afternoon the widower of the final victim ruthann lobado recalled the moment he learned his wife had been killed. jeff goldberg is live outside the fairfax countyhouse. we understand today's trial included bringing a car bumper into court. what was that about? jeff: that is right. the bumper of charles severance's late 1990 ford escort brought in the courtroom by the prosecution to further tie him to the ruthann murder through circumstantial evidence. this afternoon, we heard from ruthann's husband who talked about losing his wife. the woman he met in elementary school. this photo of norm and ruthann was taken not long before her death on february 6, 2014. on that day, norm was on his way home when he received a frantic call from a neighbor.

there has been incident at your house and you need to get home right away. composed and direct on the witness stand, norm lodato answered questions about his wife of 37 years. well-known and well-loved music teacher in alexandria. she had no enemies. he also testified that ruthanne's father was and her brother is a judge in alexandria key to the prosecution's contention that charles severance hated members of the system and wanted to commit violence against them. late today they brought in the bumper of severance's car on it a city sticker reading "assassination city derby" to prove that severance's car is the same one on the surveillance video near the sodato home on the day of the murder. late today we heard from a corporal with the west virginia police department who talked about the local and the federal officials taking

severance into custody more than a month after the murder. no court on monday because of the columbus day holiday. it resumes on tuesday. jeff goldberg, abc7 news. leon: thank you. the inmate who escaped custody at inova fairfax hospital this spring setting up a massive manhunt will send 30 years in prison. wossen assaye pleaded guilty to charges he overpowered a guard, took a gandgun and fled the hospital. he was arrested hours later a of a manhunt that shot northern virginia, the district and maryland. he was already in custody for bank robberies and ordered to pay restitution for the crimes in addition to the 30-year sentence. maureen? maureen: abc7 has now learned the fraternity member killed in a shooting at northern arizona university last night is from anne arundel county. he was killed and three others

were hurt when the police say a fellow student opened fire in a fight. the student 18-year-old steven jones is charged with murder. meanwhile, president obama is meeting with families of the nine people killed at an oregon college last week. the president's arrival wasn't welcomed by all. several dozen protesters were there. they are opposing the president's support of gun control. leon: rumors are swirling on the hill over a who will step up in race for house speaker after kevin mccarthy dropped out of the race. senior political reporter scott thuman reports tonight there is new movement on the hill to draft a familiar face. scott: a day after kevin mccarthy's shocking withdrawal from the speaker's race, a fractured house g.o.p. scrambled to renew plans. >> it's unclear how the process will work from this point on. it's unclear if the various groups within the conference will get together to say look, here is a list of people

leon: the outbound lane of the suitland parkway reopened in the past two hours after things shut down all day because of a tractor trailer crash. this happened at 4:00 this morning. the truck careened off the beltway and onto the parkway. the driver was killed. no one else was hurt. maureen: covering metro tonight. the department of transportation has rejected a request to take oversight of the transit agency. in a statement released today, the d.o.t. says it did not see the plan as the wisest or the fastest raise to bring about the necessary safety improvement at wmata. it would have given oversight to the federal railway commission. leon: it has been 20 year sings the million man march came to washington. tomorrow, we will mark the anniversary with another march. it's called justice or else.

the million man march is organized by louis farrakhan. among those planning to attend is barrett who arrived on board a bus today from montana with his family. >> i don't want my children to go through what i went through. i believe that change is due. leon: planning to attend is mother and sister of sandra bland. the mother who died in police custody in texas after a traffic stop over the summer. they dispute the police claim she committed suicide in jail. maureen: there was a security scare when a drone crashed at the white house. maureen: one person is dead and another person after 24 hours after violent altercation between officers. they opened fire on twice in district and once in maryland. in the incident they killed a man they say confronted him with the knife. the identity had not been released and the officers were not hurt. the district police shot a man on bladensburg in northeast just after midnight last night. investigators say the man pointed a gun at officers. he ran away but he was arrested when he went to a hospital. he is expected to survivor. in the third incident the officers exchanged shots with a suspect in a foot chase in southeast.

no one was hurt. the police dropped illegal guns as he fled. he is at large tonight. leon: baltimore interim commissioner praising officers for the action in violent encounter. take a look. >> he hit him. leon: now this moment you see here more than 90 seconds in the video that was posted. it has already gotten a million views since yesterday. police were called to the scene because this man was screaming obscenities at everyone around him. the commissioner says the officers knocked him to the ground. the officers was knocked to the ground. other officers subdued man and they arrested him. maureen: thousands of doses of a drug blamed for a jump in violent crime is off the streets. prince george's seized 1600 packets of synthetic drug. ephen tschida gives us a look. stephen: the police displayed a bounty of synthetic drugs.

they were confiscated from three establishments across the county. they wanted to get the word out about the synthetic drugs because they want you to take a look at the packaging. the marketing. they appear to be directly marketed to children or teenagers. prince george county police say they want parents to know of the dangers. it's not sin themmic marijuana but more like sin -- it's not synthetic marijuana but more like synthetic p.c.p. they said we see 1,8020 packet of synthetic. it is not like marijuana. it's 100 times more powerful than marijuana. almost like crack on steroids. >> though they confiscated it, the abundance of synthetic drugs, no one so far has been charged. that's because some of the substances may not be deemed illegal.
