an epidemic and it's ruining lives. jeff: she said two years ago the drugs took over her life. she started with prescription drugs but when they were hard to find she turned to heroin. losing touch with family and friends, going break. >> you end up in jails, institution or death. >> the new numbers journaled score the deadly -- underscore the deadly toll. in 2014, 728 people died because of drug overdoses. many were due to overdose of

drugs. jane is the director of a drug treatment facility in arlington where the heroin epidemic hit hard. she hopes the concerted effort by the law enforcement to fight the problem make a difference state wide. >> i think everyone at this point recognizes okay, this is really a problem. reporter: as cat continues recovery at phoenix house, she is set on not turning back. >> when i feel like i'm a member of society again. i feel like i can accomplish anything. nearly 3,000 virginians lost their lives and the experts believe the problem will get worse before it gets better. live in the newsroom, jeff goldberg, abc7 news. maureen: thank you, jeff. now virginia isn't alone in dealing with the overdose epidemic.

governor larry hogan declared the heroin overdose a health emergency. leon: we have breaking news from northwest d.c. where portion of the southbound connecticut avenue is closed after a car crash involving a police officer. the southbound connecticut between l and m street is shut down. the witnesses say the officer was driving fast but it's unclear if the officer were responding to a call or lights or sirens were activated at the time. alison: the -- maureen: the police identified an 11-year-old boy killed in a weekend car crash. he was riding on a dirt in manassas when he lost control and hit a tree. two teens one fatal shot.

tonight investigators are trying to figure out which teenager shot a hunting guide. marvin bowen coppage died saturday afternoon and two 14-year-old fired almost at the same time. leon: maryland family is seeking justice after the elderly family member's body found in a park. lubin phipps disappeared three weeks ago when the assisted living center took him out for a picnic. the body was found yesterday. the family members hired an attorney.

maureen: breaking news in a crash investigation involving a d.c. fire truck. investigator found a fire truck involved in a police with a police s.u.v. had faulty brakes. report found a brake issue pulled the rig to the left and into the s.u.v.

the morning of the crash they found air leak. it was not sufficient enough to remove the truck from service. they are now checking the brakes of every vehicle in fleet. leon: i-95 is back over in south carolina for the first time in a week. ones of rose closed across the state for days after a rainstorm brought the flooding in south carolina. 19 people died in the flooding. the good news is the water are now receding. and dozens of firefighters from fairfax county coming to render aid. they returned from the flood zone 90 minutes ago. and sam ford was there. hey, sam. sam: they have parked the trucks there. they are offloading equipment as you said 90 minutes ago. the families were here and they gave them a grand welcome
