longhorns football team has this weekend off. but that doesn't mean there won't be any football being played in austin. >> that's because hundreds of amateur australian rules football players are headed there for the season's championship tournament. but what's the sport of aussie rules all about? here's abc's nikki battiste on this try day, friday. quickly inside. >> he took it. >> don't be fooled. this isn't soccer or rugby. america, let us introduce aussie rules football. commonly called footie, australia's most popular sport is now gaining ground in the u.s. so we decided to crash this practice and collect it out.

jordan mcintyre coaches the new york mag pies, one of more than 30 teams in the united states australian football league. >> in american football when you finish high school, college, there's no real am stur sports afterwards. this is a nice out let for people who want to continue into their 20s and 30s. >> why play as you i don't have rules footbtball instead of american soccer or football? >> i just found it to be the purest sport. the most fun to play. >> reporter: this is how the game works. there are 1 players on an oval-shaped field, probably bigger than any other turf you've seen. ball is egg shaped and if you're running with it, run rule is that players must bounce the ball every 15 yards. >> it's sort of the only sport that does that. this side of the ball hits the ground. that's it. >> not easy. >> reporter: there are two ways to move the ball from player to

player. >> the first one is handball. so rather than throw the ball in rugby or overhand in american football, you hold it down here and you come through and punch the ball. >> reporter: the second option, give it a kick. >> wow. >> i did it. >> reporter: footie allows bare bone body tackles but only between the knees and shoulders. that's because players do not wear helmets or pads. >> it's a lot of knee injuries. australian rules football because your feet sort of get wedged in the turf and you get twisted around. >> reporter: a goal is scored when a competitor kicks the ball between two goal posts. to popularize the sport in the u.s., league rules require at least half the players on the field be american. aussie rules football is also showing some love for the ladies.

women, you can play, too. as long as you're up for a few bruises and tackles during late night practice. >> that's the great thing about footie there is a place for every body type on the field. it's such a dynamic sport with so many different kinds you have positions that anybody can play it. >> reporter: and these women are proving this rough and tough sport isn't only for the boys. >> everybody bring it in. >> i love american football. and i was never allowed to play it. it just wasn't something that girls could do, but girls can do it. >> reporter: besides being fun, competitive and a great washingout, there might be one other aspect of the sport that keeps these players in the game. >> so there's a women's team there, a men's team there. how many people are dating? >> that's funny. to be honest, i don't really know. i think the players keep a lot from the coach. at least three 0 or four couples among the two groups.
