the new starts now. >> from abc 7 news, this is a breaking news alert. from canada, at least three people are dead after a whale watching boat sank off vancouver island. 27 people were on board. it's not clear what caused the boat to sink. also breaking tonight, in montgomery county, a 26-year-old man is in the hospital after he was struck by a car in kensington. the victim and the driver knew each other and the police say the incident happened after an argument. the man was taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries and the police are talking to the driver. nba players and teams across the country are reacting to the death of former wizards coach flip saunders, who passed away today months after being diagnosed with cancer. erin hawthorne joins us with a look at some of his

accomplishments. a lot of people heartbroken. erin: the nba world has shown an outpouring of support, losing an all-time great coach. just as they are about to start a new season, former wizards coach flip saunders died at the age of 60. let's look at his remarkable career. saunders first became an nba coach in 1996 with the timberwolves, leading the team to eight straight playoff appearances. he specialized in coaching point guards, and under saunders kevin garnett developed into one of the best players in the nba, becoming an m.v.p. in 2009, saunders was hired as the wizards head coach, where he was instrumental in the development of john wall. five years later, he returned to minnesota to once again become

the timberwolves head coach come in addition to front office duties. in august, saunders underwent for hodgkin's lymphoma, and today it was announced by the team he died at the age of 60. there have been many moving tributes to flip saunders today, none more so than this photo from kevin garnett. it shows how devastated he is by the news. he posted this picture on facebook, which reads, "forever in my heart." so many moving tributes to flip saunders, and that was just one of them. kellye: as we look back at flip many highlights, he was a great friend to many people. jay korff has that part of the story. kellye, wizards head coach

randy wittman issued a statement in regard to his friend flip saunders, saying in part, "it was an honor to coach with him for 10 years and a privilege to call him a friend for life." 1000saunders won more than games in a coaching career that spanned decades. when flip saunders comes to mind, this person does not think about wins and losses. he was the public relations director for the wizards during that time, working closely with saunders, loved for his friendly demeanor on and off the court. vibrant, quick to smile, and easy guide to get to know. jay: in august, he was diagnosed with lymphoma. cancer considered his treatable and potentially curable, but there were complications from chemotherapy in september.>

of metro employees for stopping a suspected armed robber on a train. roz plater has the details from northwest. to: this had the potential turn deadly, but ended peacefully. nobody was hurt thanks to the quick action of the metro workers being called heroes tonight. interceptedt police the train at the gallery place metro station saturday evening, resting the robbery suspect. the police say he was armed with a loaded semi automatic handgun. the drama began an hour earlier when he flashed a gun in his waistband and robbed a man of the anacostia station, then jumping on a northbound green line train, getting into an altercation with other passengers. metro workers jumped in to intervene and the male worker pinned the suspect to the floor while the female worker radioed for help. the mill worker noticed the suspect trying to reach into is pocket.
