this morning on "world news now," dire warnings about diet. >> who is linking processed meats to cancer. and why bacon, sausage and lunch meat could be as dangerous as cigarette smoking. a worldwide respected study and the backlash. >> developing overnight, an officer caught on camera using force to remove a student from a classroom. the video that's going viral and what investigators are saying. republican showdown. dispute between donald trump and ben carson before tomorrow's debate. controversial comments and new trend in the polls. and later, spying on your baby-sitter. it sounds extreme but some moms and dads say their children's safety comes first. it is tuesday, october 27th. from abc news, this is "world news now."

>> all right. and we do say good morning on this tuesday. i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm reena ninan. do you remember that commercial that woman who would say where's the beef. >> yes, yes, she's now no longer with us. of course, we get these geyer warnings coming out this morning about meat, still the centerpiece of most american diets. the world health organization reviewing the data and finds troubling links to colon cancer and possibly other cancers, as well. abc's linsey davis with the details. >> reporter: alarming news about foods so many of us eat every day. bacon, hot dogs, lunch meat, all now classified in the same category as cigarettes and asbestos. they can cause cancer, according to the world health organization, and that's not all. the w.h.o. advisory committee also finding that unprocessed red meat is probably carcinogenic. the report, which was based on an analysis of more than 800 studies, asserts that simply eating 50 grams of processed meat each day can increase the

risk of colon cancer by 18%. here's some food for thought. the 50 grams cited in the report is the equivalent of 1.8 ounces of meat. but a typical deli sandwich has more than 4.5 ounces of meat. and this is what 1.8 ounces looks like. according to the report, 34,000 cancer deaths could be attributed to diets high in processed meat in 2012. that's out of the 8.2 million deaths caused worldwide by cancer. to put that in perspective, a million of those deaths could be attributed to smoking. the w.h.o. panel did say red meat does have nutritional value. but the meat industry is crying foul. the north american meat institute telling abc news in a statement that classifying red and processed meat as cancer hazards defies both common sense and numerous studies showing no correlation between meat and cancer. it's also recommended that you not fry or grill your meat on charcoal which can release

carcinogens. linsey davis, abc news, new york. >> the death toll is expected to rise following a powerful earthquake that struck parts of south asia. between 300 and 400 people are confirmed dead so far, most of them in pakistan. and in afghanistan, there were 33 victims including 12 schoolgirls who were trampled trying to leave a sway agbuilding. the 7.5 quake the strongest to hit the region in recent years. this morning, canadian authorities say the investigation into the sinking of a whale watching boat could take several months. a survivor of the incident claims a sudden wave capsized the boat sending everyone on board into the water. at least five people were killed. one remains missing. abc's neal karlinksky is in british columbia this morning. >> reporter: tonight, the only part of the 65-foot boat that didn't sink. just the bow, upside down and sticking straight out of the water. >> it was pretty scary, knowing that i have a friend that drives that boat. 27 people bobbing in the 55-degree water for those frigid

30 minutes. the distress call coming and immediately every boat in the area rushed in to help. the company's owner writing on the website our entire team is heart broken over the incident and you're hearts go out to the families. >> five are confirmed dead, all british citizens from 18 to 76 years old. one person remains missing. amazingly, 21 were rescued. four are still being treated at local hospitals. the rest just lucky to be alive. company officials say the boat was operating as normal right before the accident. in fact, they say this ship has done the exact same trip twice a day for the last 20 years without a problem until now. neal karlinsky, abc news. >> the suspect in that deadly homecoming parade crash appeared before a judge this morning. it's the first time on monday that adacia chambers was ordered held on a million dollar bond facing four counts of second degree murder. the prosecutor said chambers

purposely drove around a barricade and ran a red light before plowing into parade spectators. her father says she suffers from mental illness. >> a school resource officer has been placed on leave after a video shows the officer trying to remove a student from class by tipping her desk backward till she falls on the floor. he tosses the girl several feet across the floor until he eventually handcuffed her. so hard to watch this. the south carolina aclu calls it an aegregrious use off force. could you imagine if that was your child and you saw this video? >> i can just imagine the parents are screw upset by that. school is promising a full investigation into that. still, we move on now to the remnants of hurricane patricia still menacing millions of people after unleashing heavy rain and flooding across texas and louisiana. the storms are now moving into a

wide area of the southeast with downpours from louisville down to the florida panhandle. here's abc's rob marciano. >> reporter: rain and wind pounding the gulf coast states. 50-mile-per-hour gusts overnight. near baton rouge, that school bus getting stuck on a flooded bridge. the sheriff's department using a pickup to bring 20 children to safety. south of new orleans, whole neighborhoods submerged. and south of dallas, more than 70 rescues over the weekend, including this man and his dog. floods even derailing the cars on that freight train. in part from the remnants of the most powerful storm ever recorded in the western hemisphere, hurricane patricia, striking mexico with winds gusting over 200 miles an hour. our matt gutman right there. >> those winds so powerful, they pulverized concrete power lines like this. ripped off rooftops like this one here. brick walls came tumbling down. anything that wasn't nailed down, sent flying. even boats like that. but the reason so few people we hurt? look around you. for dozens of miles around, forest. >> reporter: the country getting

lucky. the compact, fast-moving storm passing over a sparsely populated area. and what's left of patricia coupled with this gulf storm is heading northeast. the next couple days very wet in spots from the mississippi river all the way 0 maine. rob marciano, abc news, atlanta, georgia. >> turning now to politics and donald trump losing more ground in iowa ahead of tomorrow's gop debate. trump blasted pollsters who reported him trailing carson by double digits telling supporters he's still in first place. after refusing to apologize to carson for remarks about his faith, trump is raising eyebrows with his latest comments on religion this time talking about muslim women keeping their faces covered. >> it's easy. you don't have to put on makeup. wouldn't it be easier, right? >> wow. trump is facing criticism for saying it hasn't been easy for him even though his father gave him his start in e.r.a. with

what he calls a small loan of $1 million. >> a small loan for a startup. >> so walmart the latest big retailer to explore using drones. a spokesman tells abc news walmart may use the drones to fly online orders to customers' doorsteps. or to fly to pick up orders out to the parking lot at their stores. the aircraft may also provide aerial surveillance at distribution centers. am son is also looking into the use of drones as you know. fedex which still delivers the old fashioned way using humans is predicting a record holiday season. it expects ship 317 million packages up 1% from last year. not all that surprising considering the popularity of online shopping. and if you're planning ahead, the busiest shipping days will be the mondays after thanksgiving and the first two mondays in december. >> okay. get those packages out. get strong language is included in the nfl's appeal of a judge's

ruling which cleared tom brady in the deflategate scandal. the league says commissioner roger goodell acted within his discretion to suspend brady for four games. nfl calls it unfathomable that i an judge would lift that suspension saying its conclusion explicable. argues in the case won't be heard till february which means he can play the entire season. >> monday night football the ravens taking on the cardinals. picking it up in the fourth qule carson palmer found john brown with a four-yard touch down pass. baltimore answered with a touchdown of its own. arizona almost sealed the dial with an interception in the end zone. the cardinals hold on for a 28-16 win. >> cardinals looking good this year. >> you like your cardinals, don't you? >> yes, they're looking good for arizona. we have more evidence that
