>> it's wednesday october 28th. >> hello, derek. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." we do say good morning for you this wednesday. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm reena ninan. we're going to get right to our lead story. upheaval in the republican presidential politics. the third gop debate tonight, at the university of colorado in boulder, and there's a bit of a shake-up. >> the stage is all but set. donald trump is no longer the front-runner. a "new york times"/cbs news poll shows ben carson is on top. it's "your voice, your vote." and abc's tom llamas who is following the republicans. >> reporter: donald trump saying it loud and saying it proud. >> i'm number one in every poll. >> trump on top. >> your numbers are unbelievable. >> boom, boom, boom. >> really amazing numbers. >> i've been winning every single one of them, right? >> reporter: but with that new national poll showing dr. ben carson in the lead, trump

bashing the poll and attacking carson's plan to replace medicare with health savings accounts. >> he wants to abolish medicare. abolishing medicare, i don't think you're going to get away with that one. it's actually a program that's worked. >> reporter: but listen to what trump said on "this week" just days ago. >> do you also agree with ben carson when he says medicare probably won't be necessary? >> it's possible. you're going to have to look at that. >> reporter: carson brushing off the attack. >> it's just propaganda. i don't want to abolish medicare. >> reporter: trump also talking about carson's opposition to abortion. >> i'm a reasonable person and if people can come up with a reasonable explanation of why they would like to kill a baby i'll listen. >> ben was -- he was pro-abortion not so long ago, and all of a sudden he's so hard on abortion, under no circumstances virtually can there be exceptions. and you say, well, how does that happen where you were pro and not long ago? >> reporter: i asked carson about that. >> when did that sort of change in thinking happen? >> a little more than 20 years ago.

i was staying up all night long sometimes operating on little premature babies trying to keep them alive and i began to really think about the potential in each one of those lives. >> reporter: but trump has also reversed his position on abortion. back in 1999 he said he was "very pro choice" but hated the concept of abortion. he now opposes it. he spoke to more than 2,000 people here and vowed to win this state. tom llamas, abc news, sioux city, iowa. the democratic front-runner was on a different stage. "the late show with stephen colbert." >> she talked about her favorite television shows, political and legal dramas not surprisingly, but colbert pressed her on presidential politics. >> who would you rather run against, donald trump or ben carson? [ laughter ] >> i'm going to leave that to the republicans. >> but you can picture either one of them in the office, right? you can picture either one of those guys in the office. [ laughter ]

>> well, i can picture them in some office. >> clinton also talked finance and the economy. she said the minimum wage is not enough to bring people out of poverty and if there were another recession clinton says she'd let the big banks fail this time. there's growing uproar over the violent classroom arrest in columbia, south carolina. the officer who flipped the female student out of her chair and dragged her across the room now at the center of an fbi investigation. the confrontation escalated when the girl refused to turn over her phone. the sheriff could determine as early as today if senior deputy ben fields will be fired. he says another video shows the girl hitting the officer. >> it just shows that when the officer puts his hands on her initially she reaches up and she pops the officer with her fist. it makes you sick to your stomach when you see that initial video. but again, that's a snapshot.

>> a lawyer for the student says his client was brutalized, her arm in a cast, she has a rug burn apparently and is suffering neck and back pain. deputy fields has been the subject of two earlier lawsuits involving allegations of excessive force and racial bias. also in south carolina no state criminal charges will be filed against a police officer who fatally shot an unarmed 19-year-old teen. the teen gunned down in his car while on a date. the officer says he feared for his life. abc's pierre thomas has the details. >> reporter: the young couple was sitting in the car after buying ice cream on a first date. it all goes down in seconds following a sting in which undercover police allegedly sell drugs to a woman riding in this car with 19-year-old zachary hammond. seneca, south carolina police officer mark tiller with his handgun drawn tries to make an arrest. briefly stepping in front of hammond's car. but hammond attempts to speed off. officer tiller fires. hammond struck twice in the side and back dies.

a south carolina prosecutor concluded the shooting was justified, that officer tiller had reason to fear for his life and that he had a difficult decision to make in just three seconds. a justice department investigation continues, so federal charges could still be brought. hammond's parents say he was shot after his car passed the officer. they are suing, claiming the officer's life was not truly in danger. pierre thomas, abc news, washington. human rights groups are reporting more atrocities at the hands of isis. the militant group is said to have tied three prisoners to ancient columns in the city of palmyra and then blowing them up. those columns dating back at least 2,000 years. and new talks aimed at ending the four-year-old civil war in syria could have a new participant. for the first time iran has been invited to join the discussion. no word yet on whether the iranians will take part. a new round of negotiations starts tomorrow in vienna. secretary of state john kerry, his russian counterpart, and the european and arab diplomats will be there as well.

south carolina's low country can expect more flooding today. the area had one of the highest tides on record yesterday, swamping cars, flooding homes, and snarling traffic in downtown charleston. despite signs warning against it, some motorists drove right into the flood waters. residents say the water came in very quickly and the flooding was worse than the historic flooding earlier this month, and that flooding was pretty remarkable. >> that was pretty intense. rained nonstop down there, and flooding downpours cover a wide area this morning from the south to the great lakes to the northeast. >> the leftovers from hurricane patricia are on the move. accuweather's justin povick has the latest. hey, good morning, justin. >> reena and kendis, thanks and good morning to you. a wet day setting up all throughout the northeast, and not just your run-of-the-mill showers. we're talking about torrential downpours advancing from southwest to northeast. there's going to be major travel delays and the potential for a thunderstorm or two as well. and then we look at low pressure and high pressure. and when you have the two pretty

close together, that normally is a cause for concern with regard to gusty winds and also rough surf. reena and kendis, back to you. >> all right, justin, thank you. well, game 1 of the world series is in the books, and it was an eventful one. all was going just dandy until this happened. until the bottom of the fourth, when viewers saw this on their screens. fox sports experiencing technical difficulties saying please stand by. that had technicians in the fox compound moving quickly to fix the problem. the network later said an electronics failure caused generators to lose power. when fox picked up the international broadcast feed, the game was in a delay because of a problem with replay cameras. soon after the broadcast returned back to normal. and did we mention there was also an outstanding game too. >> started off in the first when mr. escobar of the royals gave k.c. a 1-0 lead with an inside the park home run.

see, what happened was -- well, that red ford mustang coming to a stop on the roof of a house in michigan. the driver lost control, came through a field, and ended up on the roof of the house, which backs right up to a hill. only minor damage to the house. no one was injured in the accident but quite interesting to try to explain how that happened. and there was a new safety warning for drivers, and it has to do with the tires on your cars. >> turns out millions of tires have been recalled without drivers ever hearing about them, and those tires could be a lot older than they appear. here's abc's brian ross.

>> reporter: members of a florida church group were on their way to a weekend retreat when a tire blew and the driver lost control of the van. ten-two adults died, ten teenagers were hospitalized. investigators say the church never got the word that that tire had been recalled a year earlier. investigators for the national transportation safety board said it happens all the time. millions of tires are under safety recall, but the vast majority of owners never find out about it. >> that system's not working. it's completely broken. >> somebody lost control of their vehicle. >> reporter: the ntsb investigation also found motorists are in the dark about the potential dangers of tires that look new but are actually quite old. the tire that failed in this california accident was eight years old. killing a young mother. >> my grandson's growing up without his mother. >> reporter: safety engineers say tires can begin to break down after six years even if
