and we do say hello to you this morning on a thursday. i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm reena ninan. let's get right to our top story. last night's republican presidential debate. it was supposed to focus on economics and finance. but the candidates soon became combative. >> yeah, and some candidates behind in the polls may have emerged. abc's brandi hitt has the latest live from colorado. brandi, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kendis. this third debate here in colorado did seem chaotic at times last night. you had ten republican candidates on the same stage, talking over each other, fighting for time and throwing punches. >> do you want me to answer or do you want to answer? >> round three and the gop presidential candidates didn't hold back in a debate focused on the economy. >> this stuff is fantasy. >> reporter: ohio governor john kasich going directly affront runners ben carson and donald trump's budget proposals. >> you can't do it with empty promises. i went into ohio where we had an $8 billion hole and now we have

a $2 billion surplus. >> his poll numbers tanked. that's why he's on the end and he got nasty. so you know what, you can have him. >> reporter: carson has proposed imposing a flat tax, but the cnbc moderators argued his numbers don't add up. >> the rate is going to be much closer to 15%. >> 15% still leaves you with a $1.1 trillion hole. >> let me finish. you also have to get rid of all the deductions and loopholes. >> marco rubio also answered calls from his hometown newspaper to resign from the senate for missing too many votes. >> it's actually evidence of the bias that exists in the american media today. >> when you signed up for this this was a six-year term. and you should be showing up to work. >> someone has convinced you attacking me is going to help you. >> carly fiorina was questioned about her record as ceo of hewlett-packard. >> i was fired over a disagreement in the boardroom. i will run on my record all day long. >> after infighting and aggressive questioning, ted cruz had enough. >> this is not a cage match. and you look at the questions,

donald trump, are you a comic book villain, ben carson, can you do math, john kasich will you insult two people over here. it should be, what are your substantive solutions. >> that was a big moment during the debate. right here in the spin room afterwards, donald trump was making the rounds and he says he thought the debate was fair. they will do it again in less than two weeks in milwaukee, reena and kendis. >> brandi, some of the candidates including cruz lashed out at the moderators. has there been additional response to this? >> reporter: oh, definitely, reena. the rnc even came out with a statement right after the debate and called the moderators that they should be disappointed in themselves even with this quote, "cnbc should be an shaped in how the moderators handled this had debate and the questions that they were asked," reena and kendis. >> they did come under fire. so many moderators. ris christie had an outspoken moment.

we vant haven't heard much from him but he had a moment tonight. >> a very big moment. it was over fantasy football. that was the question he was asked. he says, when you talk about isis and what's been going on in iraq and this is the type of question you want to ask me about, fantasy football regulations, really? that response got the biggest roar from the crowd and it lasted several seconds. again, that backlash over the questions that were asked, i mean it was about the economy and it was supposed to be focused on jobs, but a lot of people just weren't happy with the back and forth with the moderators tonight. >> a lot of people tuned in wanting to hear how their pocketbooks would be affected by these candidates. >> the moderators came armed with a lot of facts. brandi hitt reporting live for us from the republican debate in colorado. let's make it a date in two weeks, brandi. >> let's do it. >> thank you. we'll look for more coverage of the republican debate in our next half hour. we're going to have much more analysis from our political team on "america this morning" as well as, of course, on "good morning america." now to another top headline this morning.

the effort to recover a military surveillance blimp that floated away and was out of control for hours. >> yeah, it was floating above aberdeen, the proving ground there in maryland when its tether broke. the blimp then drifted all the way to moreland township, pennsylvania. abc's linsey davis with the details. >> reporter: for hours a mystery. just where was the $175 million military blimp? >> it knocked down our power at school and it knocked down all of columbia's power. >> reporter: 12:20 p.m., the blimp comes unhinged, detaching from its station at aberdeen proving ground in maryland, traveling north, 16,000 feet in the air, floating into pennsylvania. >> it's going to land right in the corn field. >> reporter: the blimp floating over a high school in bloomsburg, pennsylvania. >> oh, my god, it's going down! >> reporter: dragging a long metal tether, a cable several thousand feet long, wiping out power lines along the way. >> lights out for us at fowlersville and 47. >> they lost power out there, also. >> route 11's dead. >> reporter: listen to this

neighbor's recording from the ground. >> whatever this thing is doesn't appear to be attached to anything. there's a line dragging. >> reporter: the top secret balloon cost $175 million. the program, more than $2 billion. the balloon is equipped with high tech radar. an early warning system that can search an area the size of texas for incoming cruise missiles, unfriendly aircraft, even tanks on the ground. it is filled with helium. 242 feet long. three-quarters of a football field. the secretary of defense telling reporters he's seen these balloons break free in afghanistan, something that can happen in bad weather. retired colonel stephen ganyard saying, make no mistake -- it was a lot of taxpayer money floating for much of the afternoon. >> so, this protects the national capital region but it's a very sophisticated military technology. very classified. it's the best capability in the world. >> reporter: shortly before touching down, the tail fell off a quarter mile away from the massive balloon's final resting place in moreland township,

pennsylvania, just after 4:00 p.m. a 150-plus mile journey from that base in maryland, sending f-16s in the air and officials on the ground scrambling. it was not far from here, in columbia county, pennsylvania, when the aerostat started to deflate on its own. and now a warning from officials for people to stay away from the balloon, even with it now back on the ground. linsey davis, abc news, columbia county, pennsylvania. a lot of questions over how that gotot loose. all right. lindsay, thanks. an attorney for the deputy who was fired for throwing a student across a clam says what the officer did was lawful and justified. his attorney says ben fields' actions were carried out professionally and he was performing his job duties legally, but in a statement released late last night, the school board chairman said educators and police must be held to a higher standard. and three students were arrested after this fight at a sacramento high school. the scene videotaped and posted to youtube. the principal was pushed to the ground while trying to break up

the fight. he was not seriously injured and quickly got back on his feet. the three students in their teens facing some serious charges. now to a consumer alert. about half a million allergy injectors are being recalled all injectors sold under the brand name auvi-q. they are recalled because had he may not deliver the right amount of life-saving medicine. they contain epinephrine needed during a severe allergic reaction. the recall follows more than two dozen complaints. there's also a recall for kids' water bottles sold at pottery barn. they feature images of avengers and darth vader. the gray paint on the metal portion of the bottles may contain too much lead. customers should return them to the store. >> kids of all ages and adults are getting excited for saturday and the trick-or-treating that comes with halloween. this is really cool. a dad in oregon is working to finish up some very special costumes. >> what he does is design elaborate creations fitted around a child's wheelchair.
