[captioning performed by the national captioning institute, which is responsible for its caption content and accuracy. visit ncicap.org] >> that breaking news is from woodson high school in fairfax county. five students taken to the hospital after a fire. this is a live look at the scene from news chopper seven. our suzanne kennedy is at the school this man. suzanne. suzanne: we are getting ready for a briefing that we are going to receive from the police department and the fire department about exactly what happened here. ands take you to 9:40 a.m. that is when this all started happening here and a chemistry lab at the high school during seventh period when a fire

started inside of the chemistry lab. we are not sure how that fire started five students are injured and two of them received life-threatening injuries. three of them were transported by ground to a fairfax hospital. threateningok-alike injuries, they were transported to washington hospital center's earn unit. we did get to talk to a student and a parent and here's what they have to say. i the fire alarm went off and thought it was just a drill, but we were hearing from people that someone caught on fire and we realized it was serious. i just went to my car and drove over here to see what's going on. it's crazy. when's always concerning you get a text that the school has been evacuated because of the fire. when i heard it was a chemistry lab, i thought it was a gas-fired. from the information i heard from the stands, there are a lot of rumors going around and it sounds more chemical and gas. we also know that a

teacher was injured in this incident. however, the teacher remained here on the scene. this was an early dismissal day for students. they evacuated them and they remain over my right shoulder here at the football stadium. all of them are being kept there until what was scheduled to the a 12:55 p.m. dismissal this afternoon. parents were notified of the incident by way of a text. they were told there was a fire in the chemistry lab and we are told that is the total of the extent of injuries. we are taking on stop of the situation and we will bring you that briefing live in the next 10 minutes p reporting live, suzanne kennedy, abc 7 news. jummy: we will check back in with you in just a few minutes. this was a frightening scene at woodson high school and it's getting a lot of potential -- media.on on social our coverage continues with josie and the newsroom. josie: people who tweeted out pictures had to be close by after this happened.

we are seeing some of the images that came through on social media, including this one. someone put on instagram that this is a big fire. this video is the emergency response to woodson high school this morning. you can see the fire trucks rolling in. all hands on deck for a situation like this at the high school. you can see a little bit of chaos as people arrive and they stand outside trying to find out exactly what has happened. these are high school kids and they are hoping everyone is ok. the students basically tweeting about their activity and we are continuing to follow this what if you come to bt woodson high school. they said that they were still waiting for fairfax fire and rescue to give them the all clear to go back into the building could w. we are going to monitor the social media channel and others and any images that we find. back to you. remind our viewers to follow us for these and breaking news by signing up

several reported tornadoes left damage in parts of texas today. and counties near san antonio, a flood emergency forced people to evacuate homes. officials are investigating the extent of the damage and to see if anyone was injured. let's get a check of the roadways now. jamie sullivan joins us with a look at traffic. jamie: we are seeing a lot of heavy volume southbound on 95. this is what what you will happen to get into heading south near the aqua quad. once you cross and continue closer toward woodbridge, that is where you get a little bit of relief. let's talk about how slow we actually are. it is the stretch between morton and continuing south toward woodbridge at about seven miles per hour. as far as the capital beltway goes, we are clear in virginia and getting closer to the wilson bridge. no delays and continuing north on the inner loop, no delays gw parkway.he we are mostly in the green. i want to go to maryland through montgomery county and it's not too bad working through the best

chief in the fire chief stepan along with dr. francis ivey. >> good morning, everyone. and it is still morning. >> it is afternoon, ok. inky. thank you. of fairfax county fire and rescue department. earlier this morning around 9:40 a.m., we had an incident that was reported by 1 from hg woodson high school that there was a fire in the bot building. the school did exactly what they were supposed to do. they evacuated the structure. our five response and medic units responded to the scene. arriving on the scene, the first engine reported an active fire in a classroom and one of the chemistry classroom areas of the school.

they were greeted unfortunately with several students that were injured. two of them were transported by helicopter to the washington turn center and they are now at the burn center in what we will describe right now from the preliminary reports in a serious condition with serious injuries. they are not life-threatening injuries. the remaining students that were injured, the three others, were then treated and also transported to a nearby hospital. there was one other exposure injury and that was to a staff here at ht woodson high school. that person was treated and cared for and not transported at this time. preliminarily, the investigation activityhat classroom was occurring during school hours.

subsequently, a fire, chemical of nature, did occur. as i indicated, there were several injuries. the fire is still under investigation. we have numerous investigative support here at the scene. certainly with great support from the fairfax county police department. our hazmat units are also on the scene to help with mitigation and we expect that to occur for several hours to come. i am also happy to report that with the great practice of fire drills and the execution of the that all the students were safely evacuated into their area they were designated for. at this time, we have no further reports of injuries whatsoever to the remaining students.

concludes thech briefing. other like to turn it over to roessler. can i let him give his briefing and then i will come back? chief roessler: on behalf of fairfax county government, our hearts go out to the students that were injured and the staff that were injured and all the parents and everyone in the community. we hope for their speedy recovery and our prayers and thoughts are with them at this time. from a police perspective, as wers indicated, there was no evidence of criminal activity and this appears to be a chemical fire accident in nature at this point in time. office has thels primary investigator lead on this with support from the police department. thank you. chief bowers: now i will take questions. >> were any students in

halloween costumes? not to mysler: knowledge. >> where the kids playing around? chief bowers: to the best of my knowledge, they were in a classroom activity and that is all we can report at this time. one of the injured student said that they were experimenting with changing colors and fire and that the injured were in the first row of the classroom. can you support that? i cannot.rs: no everything is polin neri with the investigation. what we know is that there are five injuries in two of those injuries are serious burn injuries. i do not know the specific activity. can you explain if the two severely injured was a girls? or boy? chief bowers: not at this time before we alert the families.

theey talk about experiment? chief bowers: the school has a curriculum that they certainly practice safe activity. i cannot say that we directly communicate with them, but i will say that they do know how to and what to do in their classroom activities and they are very, very safe. >> were there any efforts made to exiting was the fire by the teacher or to render aid to the students that were injured and was this immediately and evacuation out of the classroom? chief bowers: to really respond to your question, it was all the above with respect to notify 911, a vacuum waiting and also providing immediate care in terms of school staff. they did a magnificent job. they did exactly what we have asked them to do, which is notify 911, do what you can to prevent further harm, and then thirdly get out of the school, which they did. the teacheralled by

in the classroom or students in the classroom or outside of the classroom? chief bowers: i'm sorry. i cannot confirm right now how the 911 call was re received. >> we heard a story and i've no idea of this truth into it. the students hair got caught on fire? chief bowers: not to my knowledge at all. injuries, no,ific i can only tell you was a burnt injured. -- a burn injury. >> hang on one minute. so it's not an explosion, but they were doing some kind of chemical experiment. was there a chemical that caught on fire? chief bowers: again, preliminarily in the investigation, we know that we had a chemical fire, whether that was a reaction or something that actually caught fire, i cannot comment on that because i do not know and i do not want to be speculative. i only want to give you fax. >> did you say there was maybe a

flash? how do these kids get hurt? chief bowers: i'm sorry, i can't. i do not know the physical place that everybody was at. i did get my eyes on the room in which the fire occurred, but i cannot tell you at this point it >. >> can you describe what looks like? chief bowers: a general classroom that's a chemistry lab. studentard reports of a with 23% of burns on her body. can you speak about the injury and the good news that they are not life-threatening? chief bowers: i can speak to the 23% by saying that there was a chemical fire and there were chemical burns. i do not know what extent it because of the excellent treatment provided initially as fireas the first paramedics i got here in the subsequent transfer to the police helicopter and burn center, they are doing very well. it may see comment to you

what the room look like, but could you describe for us what you saw in the classroom, maybe a percentage of the room burned and where was in the room? any details on what you have eyes on? chief bowers: i appreciate your question, but i hope that the same time that we are also concerned about details. with an investigation going on, i do not want to -- i want to make sure that i do not give inaccurate for mash -- information one way or another. with respect to question, i cannot tell you. >> when will you have details? chief bowers: the investigation is ongoing. they could be a matter of hours or days. i don't know. we have to make sure -- number 1 , young the children adults that were injured, that they are taking care of. second, we want to make sure and the school children adults that are still in the school or work and school are safe, which they are. third, we want to make sure that the staff here is good.
