this case is wide open. alison: what a mystery. thank you. meanwhile, they say there is not much parents wouldn't do for their children. today in kettering people helped pull a man from his car after it slipped on central avenue to watch him take off on foot. he was racing to get to the kids as the house caught fire. stephen tschida spoke to the father about what happened here. what a story! >> yeah. incredible. we have been working this all day to find out what happened at the burned out townhome. ten minutes ago, carlos pettigrew arrived here home from the hospital. he is behind us talking to his mily and his friends. he told me about the terror he felt when he got a phone that his home was inflamed. his three children and his niece were inside.

>> the s.u.v. spun out of control. >> stumble. >> they raced to help the driver trapped inside. after he got him out, he said he tried to keep the man calm. >> the s.u.v. spun out of control blocks from the burned-out townhome. he staggered to another vehicle and asked for a ride to his home. about a block from it, he bolted from the car and started to run. they were trying to get home. they wouldn't tell me. they brought me the back way. >> she says when she got to herhouse she had no idea whether her children or her husband were okay. she says her three children and her niece and the family

dog were inside the townhome when the fire broke out. >> it was in slow motion. >> carlos says he is okay. he was bloodied in the accident. but he says he is okay now. there is another bit of good news. the family dog was in the basement, trapped in the basement when the firefighters got here but they got if the home and opened the basement door. the dog got out and all are okay tonight. reporting live, stephen tschida, abc7 news. alison: thank goodness everyone is okay in the story. thank you. we have new information about a deadly crash this hyattsville. police identified the driver that caused the wreck as medardo flores. he died in sunday's crash with four other people. today the investigators released the frantic 911 calls from the night of the crash.

arrested yesterday who was charged with third-degree sexual abuse. this afternoon, denied bail in court. the video you saw was from a month ago. a man we met today told us he ran into those women over the weekend. >> when he saw the video of two women twerking and groping a man at the new york avenue shell station he recognized them as the same women who grobeed him last saturday outside another shell a block away. >> it was like, i was like please, leave me alone. i'm not into that. >> he said it wasn't just him. other men trying to gas up had to push them away too. >> none of the guys went for it. >> that park of new york avenue is known for streetwalkers and some women took off running as soon as they saw the cameras. police sat park watching a budget hotel lot. one mother said prostitutes are busy here.

alison: let's get to breaking news out of southwest washington. jennifer donelan arrived on the scene in mobile track 7. what is the latest? jen, can you hear us? jennifer: yes, i hear you. we are in the 100 block of m street southwest, right behind -- let me give you a shot from the roof. the police were just knocking on the door of the vehicle here. we are in mobile track 7. the first district station is home to d.c. homicide division. there is a shooting and the police were right here. i see crime scene tape and a number of police officers. we are waiting to get information now. as soon as we find out what happened we'll toss it back to

you. alison: okay. check back with us shortly. thank you. moving on, a major breakthrough. this is an airplane tracking. so today, the united nations agreed to set aside radio frequencies so airplanes can be tracked by satellite. not just from the ground. this change comes after malaysia airlines flight 370 vanished back in march 2014. the disappearance exposing weaknesses in air navigation systems. debris from the plane, though, was found in the indian ocean back in july. leon: a beautiful day here. but in other parts of the country they are dealing with snow. the snowstorms slamming part of the midwest and the planes including colorado, nebraska, kansas. between six and 12 inches of snow fell in colorado and wyoming. earlier in the week almost 10 inches of snow fell in reno, nevada. some of those places like having the snow because of the skiing. is there a lot of skiing in

reno? doug: not reno proper. 28 years ago today we had a veterans day snowstorm in the capital. a lot of snow. in the suburbs. kind of crazy. the day before that, i didn't work that day so my hands were clean. even on tv in washington the night before had it wrong. but my hands are clean. i didn't work. a whole lot prettier today. temperatures are around 60 degrees. this is a time lapse from great falls, virginia. blue sky and the sunshine gorgeous. breeze out there. going to have a bit of breeziness in the forecast here through the next several days. friday to saturday. right now 55 in great falls. a beautiful sun set. sun down 15 to 25 minutes ago. 57 degrees in leesburg. 53 in league league.

52 in fredericksburg. 60 in the capital. getting through the evening the skies are partly cloudy. fairly clear now. we pick up more cloudiness overnight. chilly, too, with a northwesterly breeze. 39 to 49 degrees by the morning. tomorrow the winds will turn south/southwest and get breezy from the system. not from the low pressure center pretty much is over omaha now where there are tornadoens on ground and outside of depoint. snow falling over east central nebraska. but from the cold front that extends south. that will rise in our direction quickly tomorrow. scattered showers and gusty winds. maybe a thunderstorm from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. move through the areas south and west of the region first. the sun will come back out. we have active warnings and heavy snow around the back side. really the first big storm that made it from the coast to

suffered a an injury to his arm. growburg left with a damaged leg. the brave i have earned him a silver star and thursday will deliver a medal of honor at the white house. growburg is only the tenth living person to receive it that served in afghanistan. but the resident says the award isn't about him. >> this gives me an opportunity to represent the true heroes that didn't make back that day. >> they are the true heroes. they ar that made the ultimate sacrifice. >> in arlington, kellye lynn, abc7 news. alison: so deserving of that honor. meanwhile a k-9 with d.c. fire and e.m.s. we have learned will be off the job for several weeks. the dog is named rue and a fire spokesman tells us the handler noticed that the dog was sluggish this week and he took him to the vet. raph a scan, surgery required to remove blockage from the intesteins. he will -- intestines.

leon: let's get an update on the breaking news. a shooting in southwest washington. jennifer donelan new on the scene of mobile track 7. what are you seeing? what have you heard so far? jennifer: we have an update for you, leon. we will take it to the rooftop camera on mobile track 7. my photographer jim johnson is going to pan back. the building that you see on the right side of the screen is the first district station. 100 block of m street uthwest andh to the d.c. homicide division. you see the flashes blue lights. that is where the shooting occurred behind the buildings. we understand the man that was shot in conscious and breathing. at the hospital. so that is the latest we have for you. if we get anything else we will be back in touch. back to you. alison: okay.

thank you. see you then. you want fries with that? that upsell is common with a lot of businesses but it gets complicated and expensive with our cars. consumer investigator kimberly suiters report that some local customers of a chain tire store are cautioning others to tread carefully. >> my concern is your calipers is blocked. >> we didn't plan to investigate mr. tire. >> i understand -- kimberly: that is my car. the manager gave me a good deal on high of end tires beating an internet price. >> tow it out. >> tow it out? >> unless we do the works on the brakes. kimberly: he suggested we spend another $739 to make it road worthy. >> i just had this car at the dealer and they said something about my brakes being bad.

>> i'll leave that up to you. i am looking at it right now. you have no brakes. >> we took a risk and went to a business up the road. what did you find wrong with the car? >> absolutely nothing. >> they had the mechanics do a thorough inspection. >> we worried about that as a safety issue. we took the tires off and took the brakes off. pressurized it. nice and smooth. nothing wrong with the brakes. >> when we showed th video to justin he couldn't help but laugh. >> how are you supposed to know? how are you supposed to know? >> he didn't know when he took his car to mr. tire for a basic alignment. his wife also took her car there for new tires. she got good ones. but they both were given suggestive repair list thousands of dollars long. >> they tried to scare me into having the work done by saying your car is horribly unsafe. we don't recommend you doing this.

trying to belittle me nd make me scared enough to pay $2,500 to get the work done. >> the only reason he didn't authorize the work he had just come from a trusted mechanic that records show had done extensive work on the car. mr. tire says thousands of people across the shop report back a positive experience on the customer survey. "7 on your side" found at least 20 similar complaints about two stores in arlington. filed with the better business bureau and written on yelp. customers believing they were sold unnecessary repairs, saying employees tried to scare them to costly jobs. and warn them without the repairs they could end up on the side of the highway. another customer cautioning forgive the pun but you should tread carefully in this tire dealership. when we went back to the mr. tire manager who handles my car, he stands by his words and all repairs are recommended. not required. "7 on your side" had several telephone conversations with the divisional vice president of mr. tire. and while he declined to go on

the first 100 customers wiive ak for a year. good luck. vomen tiers clearing up the mural. this summer vandals fired paint ball at the mural and it features the past 11 presidents. it took the artist three years to create that. police have not made arrests. alison: well, you can call her the welcome third wheel. amy downs of frederick maryland helped push a man in a wheelchair to the finish line of the new york city marathon. it all happened after the left rear wheel disintegrated on the wheelchair. they found it hard to make turns.

leon: as many as 100,000 americans live with sickle cell disease. a genetic blood disorder. for the vast majority there is no cure. we met a determined young girl living with the disease. she is on a mission to change that one step at a time. that makes them this week's harris tose hero. >> make a wish. [applause] >> london nichols is celebrating her 8th birthday. but is not the typical children party. >> what she said, she wants a circle cell -- sickle cell

walk and raise money to bring about awareness of the sickle cell disease. leon: it's a hereditary blood disorder. london was diagnosed just after she was born. they marked the walk starting point, thus the name london bridge walk. by the end her birthday walk raised more than 2800. >> thank you. >> which she presented to the head of the howard university department of pediatrics which was underfunded. >> every penny counts when it comes to fighting a chronic disease. >> you have to be making people away. without that, it is no success. >> for london it seems natural. to have children sharing the same thing she has. her birthday wish --

alison: right now two families are back in the u.s. after three years of waiting to be complete. they were fighting to get exit visas for their adopted children from the congo. brianne carter at dulles international airport now where the families cleared customs about an hour and a half ago. brianne: this is the moment that the family has been waiting for, for more than three years. >> we have been training every day, every day. every day. to come home soon. >> for the first time since they adopted him in 2012, their son isaac is finally home in the u.s. >> exuberance. i am so excited. we have been waiting for so long. >> in 2013, authorities in congo put a hold on exit visas for international adoptions. but just last week, the government cleared the way for more than 70 adoptions. today at dulles international airport three of the children arrived in the u.s. including isaac and the boys glute and andre.

however, there are still hundreds of families waiting. >> it's not our daughter today. but we're prayerful and hopeful it will be. >> she is still waiting to have her 8-year-old daughter at home in the u.s. she is rejoicing today with these parents. >> i knew i had to be here. to see the children come off the plane. brianne: what an emotional reunion it was for the family. for the family who lives in illinois they won't head back right away. they are taking advantage of being in the nation's capital and they plan to show isaac the halls of congress and other sight-seeing options including museums and other places downtown before heading back home. reporting live, brianne carter, abc7 news. leon: all right. that's great. thank you. well, see if isaac is going to learn how bad traffic can be while he is in washington. jamie: i think so. look at a lot of lights behind

me. if he is traveling from the stretch in virginia on 66, closer to the capital beltway this is what you expect. two of the right lanes are blocked off. i think now they have blocked off a third. everyone is squeezing by in the left lane and the left shoulder. this is 66 eastbound before the beltway. that is eastbound. so anyone heading in from fairfax or centreville trying to get to the beltway. move to the map. so the slowing behind this, of course, you have it and it is quickly building in. move no the map. you see the solid green line? this is heading westbound outbound on 66. it looks great. we are not seeing major issues right now. really anywhere. a little slowing on 395. that is it. the top of the beltway. i usually mention it takes 37 minutes. seven minutes right now to get from tyson to bethesda.

so because of this veterans day that is why we are seeing light traffic. 66, is a different story heading in. back to you. alison: okay. thank you. trending now, target is coming under fire again this time for a sweater that the critics say trivializes mental illness. a red, green, white sweater that says o.c.d., obsess i christmas disord -- obsessive christmas disorder and critics say it mights light of of obsessive compulsive disorder. bloomingdale is apologizing for its latest holiday ad. the critics say advocates date rape. you can see that the ad says, "spike your best friend's eggnog when they are not looking." it sparked immediate outrage online. the high-end retailer tweeted an apology and acknowledged it's in poor taste. but it's in a print catalog so

it can't be pulled. leon: oops. we'll see if we need sweaters or eggnog or whatever. alison: what is the latest? it's still warm. doug: 60 or so. friday or saturday and windy and chillier. it will feel like november. start with a word on the storm we have been following. heavy snow over eastern nebraska. violent weather over iowa. numerous tornado warnings in the afternoon. we show you storm chasers from kcti in des moines. the air traffic control tower in des moines spotted a tornado. we will stick with this for a couple of seconds to show you the action and the violent storms that are rotated in the area over south central and central iowa this afternoon. now the map shows a line of heavy storms over eastern iowa. clip northwestern illinois, southwestern wisconsin. we are on the extreme southern fringe of the system. cold front that is attached will come through midday tomorrow and showers or thunderstorms. mid-to-upper 50's across the area. partly cloudy skies.
