6:05 pm

oldest ally. president obama: we have seen an outrageous attempt to terrorize civilians. this is an attack not just on the people of france, but this is an attack on all of humanity and the universal values that we share. maureen: a lot of what we are learning from france is on social media. chris papst continues our team coverage with that. chris? chris: terrifying situation. a lot of information we are getting is coming from the people on the ground. they are sharing the videos, sharing the pictures. we are sharing their information with us. this is what we have here. this is a small area. the people that are tweeting and instagramming about this. this is after midnight now. now it would be on a saturday morning in france. this was supposed to be a beautiful friday night in the city of light. unfortunately it turned out
6:07 pm
not so much to be. this gentleman said, "paris attacks on our street. in paris. in kamikaze," an interesting word they used. "kamikaze. please stay at home my friends." if we keep going a lot of these are in different languages. we have english, french, spanish, german. germans were in town playing the soccer game. we look at this one right here, we can see i was there by coincidence. just left the zone. pray for peace. this has become the #people are using. #prayforparis. these are streets cordoned off. people taking pictures of what is going on. see the e.m.s. the emergency crews, the police. getting on the scene to help the people. this is chaotic. very terrible situation right now happening in paris. people on the ground are
6:08 pm
giving us the role-time information. we will obviously deliver it to you. maureen: chris, thank you so much. leon: thank you, chris. maureen: back to the breaking news. tom roussey is live at the french embassy in northwest washington. what is going on there? tom: we have seen a lot of activity here. a number of folks coming out of here with the shocked expression on their faces. i will step out of the way to show you the scene here in northwest washington. this is the french embassy. we talked to one person at length a french citizen and an intern right now. he said folks in there are just in shock. he was in shock as we talked to him. he said after the terrorist attacks earlier in year, total over days of 20 people died. folks were so upset then and there is a feeling inside that can't believe that this is happening again so soon.
6:09 pm
>> you have to know -- [inaudible] it's not going by. the worst thing is that a loll of experts -- lot of experts talk about this. >> he was saying over and over again as we talk to him outside the french embassy, what can you do? if small groups want to create terror it is difficult to prevent that. leon: all right. sorry about that. right now the entire newsroom is monitoring the situation in paris and we will bring you updates as soon as we learn the new information throughout the newscast. you can have the extensive coverage "world news tonight" at 6:30. alison: we'll be right back. wow. this place is spectacular.

6:13 pm
or inside-outside a major stadium in paris. we are keeping an eye on the latest word of a fifth explosion that may have happened at a major shopping center downtown. we are keeping an eye on the situation. we'll update you with the latest as we get you. more and more pictures are coming in to us right now. this is cell phone videoment the you -- cell phone video. the newest video. maureen: white house is condemning the disgusting the claim against a secret service officer sexting in the white house. lee moore accused of sending sexual images who he thought was a teenage girl. i a esthe latest in a series of scandals for the secret service. jeff goldberg has reaction from the white house tonight. jeff? jeff: today in dover, delaware, lee moore waived his preliminary hearing in state court and will be taken to federal custody on monday. face a judge in wilmington, delaware. more work at the white house.

now the secret service is forced to deal with a fall-out from yet another high-profile scandal. once again the agency assigned to protect the white house -- >> disgusting. >> and the president -- >> disappointing. jeff: has americans from all over shaking their head. >> this is scary. you trust them. reporter: 37-year-old lee moore who lives lives in queen , maryland is charged with sending obscene material to someone he thought was a 14-year-old girl but was an agent with the delaware state police. according to a criminal complaint moore was communicating with the site meet 24 and kick where they engage in explicit sexual conversations. moore is accused of sending lewd photos of himself asking for videos and pictures of the child and asking the child to meet up for sex. after turning himself into authorities this week, moore admitted to sending some f the messages we ouat thite house. >> tnt worse. that is n if he was

6:17 pm
6:18 pm
6:19 pm
maureen: we are going back to jonathan elias in the newsroom. he has new information on the deadly attacks underway in paris right now. jonathan? jonathan: we know the situation is president hollande ordered the borders of his country to be sealed. that hasn't happened since world war ii. anyway, it hasn't happened since world war ii. he is asking people to stay inside their homes. don't go to the city of paris. they want everyone to stay in the house and lock themselves in. if you have to come out on the street only do so in an emergency. let me break down for you what we know at this hour. if you are just joining us, this has been a chaotic scene in the city of paris. started two hours ago now. a stadium, soccer stadium packed with people. french and germans were having a great soccer game. at halftime of that game, two
6:20 pm
loud explosions could be heard outside the stadium going off. maybe we can play that for you. i'm not sure if we have the videotape ready to go. give me two seconds and i'll play it for you. listen to the sound and the percussion of the explosions. these are big explosions. not grenades. experts say they appear to be back pack explosions o vest explosions that a suicide bomber would wear. listen carefully. [explosion] [explosion] after each of the explosions you could hear people cheering. we understand that the explosions happened just outside the stadium. at the time of the explosions. the loud speaker came on the voice was telling people please stay inside the stadium. as that was happening, almost exactly the same time, less than two miles away at a popular restaurant -- remember, this is friday night in paris. this is a very popular section of town, 'em for the young
6:21 pm
people. the restaurant and the barrings packed -- bars packed. automatic gunfire could be heard. bbc is reporting a hundred shots were fired. they saw the gunman running off. more than 20 people now were killed. we understand a half mile away at a bar, another bar, packed. more gunfire. at least five people were killed at that location. the numbers don't stick to them, they will continue to go up as the night goes on. we also have then at a concert hall five miles away gunman at least three or four gunman inside the concert hall stood up. the explosion was heard. shots were fired. people were killed there. at least 15. more than ahundred people now held hostage inse that concert hall. we thought the worst was over, about a half hour after that, at a popular shopping mall not far away from popular tourist locations, notre dame, the famous museum, they had a horrible shooting i understand at a maloney -- at a mall
6:22 pm
there. we don't have details. the president ordered the border sealed and wants military on the street to assist the french police. give me one second. we have something coming in right now. so we are hearing of the attack. three explosions. two were suicide bombers. one was a bomb planted in the location. that was outside the soccer stadium. what they were targeting, stadium or maybe they had people outside they were targeting. if you have a soccer game there are people that ngregate oue we know, it's reported that people were hurt and killed outside the stadium as well. the latest toll we have is 60 people have been killed. in excess of a hundred people are being held hostage inside the theater. as far as the number of wounded that is not something that we have our hand on yet. keep in mind, these are all locations that have not been deemed safe. from our understanding, still at that hour, they have not been deemed safe.
6:23 pm
for that reason it's difficult for the first responders to race in and pick up the wounded to get them out of there. they are doing it but they are doing it under the protection of now the police and the military that are moved in the area to help them assist. we are trying to figure out huh many people have been wounded. no claims of responsibility so far. is reported from the partner cnn. theyaid thereis a hashtag that isis is using now celebrating the attacks that taken place in paris. keep in mind the attacks come on the same day that "jihadi john," the guy cutting people's heads off on the tape for isis. he was killed today in a drone strike that took him out today. this is the same day that this is taking place. from the military intelligence officer, former marine, he said what is playing out on the streets of paris, france, today is not something that was whipped together in a couple of hours. this is a coordinated effort that probably took weeks if not months of planning. still we don't know if this is
6:24 pm
over of yet. the last attack that we heard was a mall location. we have no report of what has happened there so far. we are continuing to monitor a number of different sources to figure out what is happening in paris. needless to say, this is a bloody and a horrible night in the city of paris. that is all we've got from the newsroom. back to you upstairs. leon: thanks. monitoring the situation as it is coming in. you mentioned the hashtag on twitter. we see former homeland security that isis may be watching but not necessarily that they are involved. we will continue to follow that. we are hearing reports that witnesses are saying that the shooters may have been shooting for as long as ten minutes inside that theater there in paris. we will keep giving you information on that situation. chris papst has been digging. what have you learned right now? chris: we are just getting inundated with people tweeting about what is going on here. there is a small area. a couple of people tweeting
6:25 pm
about the topic. this is in downtown france near a subway stop they have. here is video we just got in. that someone tweeted to show the emergencies that they are starting to issue to people somehow affected by this. this isn't given context of where this is happening or where the person may have been. when this is going on, this is a five-mile stretch between some of the shootings and the bombings. if we keep moving here, we see there is more of the chaos. the people are standing around. more video of the emergency blankets handed out. this seems like a long line of people crowding along the wall right now. getting the blankets. they are used when people are in shock to keep them warm to mitigate the shock they are experiencing. you can see the ambulances going as well. we got a sweet that stuck ou to me. convoy of ambulances arriving now at the theater. many casualties expected. this one was put on facebook
6:26 pm
just 16 minutes ago. maybe this is somebody we can reach out to, to see if they can provide us more information. this is n extremely chilling tweet. "many casualties expected." from someone who seems to be there right now. so a fluid and a terrifying situation. as this information comes in, we are hearing from the people on the ground, tourists that live there and the many people who may have been there for the soccer match between germany and france. we are getting real-time information. as it continues to come in. we will bring it to you. maureen: thank you so much. we will go back to else else in the newsroom who has -- jonathan elias in the newsroom. jonathan: this is a scary turning. at the concert hall where a hundred people are held hostage we are getting reports from the "associated press" automatic gunfire can be heard inside the concert hall. whether or not they are shooting hostages or what they are doing we don't know. they are hearing gunfire inside. the problem at this point for the first responders that have to bring in special weapons teams and negotiators and try to figure out what they have got.
6:27 pm
it usually takes them a while to figure out what they are up against. they can't go through the doors to open fire. if you have three or four gunmen and hundreds of people held hostage that is not a good way to do it. they can't do that. the problem is they don't have time on their side. i appears gunfire is heard inside the concert hall. automatic gunfire. doors are locked. the people are held hostage inside there. we get more information about this we'll get it to you. leon: absolutely. thank you, jonathan. we'll keep an eye on the situation as it plays out. maureen: we have a few minutes to talk to doug about the weekend weather. doug: couple to show you. straightforward weather forecast. feel chilly. we start off with a look at the forecast tonight. 32-39. winds are gusty all day. they will settle down tonight. very cold with the temperatures in the 30's by early tomorrow morning. as we get through the weekend, we will call for plenty of sunshine. windy and chillier than 53 for a high on sunday.
6:28 pm
58 degrees. winds will calm down a little bit. we will see a warmum coming our way. we have sunshine through 60. get to 64 on monday. mid-60's tuesday. temperatures are warm up more. there will be showers. tomorrow evening, at 6:15, 6:00 rather, we will be having the lighting of the national harbor christmas tree. i will be there with a lot of folks, entertainment, music and holiday stuff. quiet weekend with no weather concerns. looking forward for the six or seven days. maureen: thank you, doug. it has been a horrible evening in paris tonight. 60 people dead. hundreds being held hostage. four incident across some of the most popular night spots in paris. now there are reports that
6:29 pm
some the people taken hostage may be, may be killed by the hostage takers. leon: we are watching here, french television coming in from bsm tv, french television network there. we cannot tell whether or not these are live pictures right now but it does appear that this is the scene where authorities now have staged some sort of a effort there to take care of hostages -- sorry, those who may have been injured. that is an ambulance. we don't see police or tactical vehicles here but we understand that there are reports right now that in the theater, hundreds of people held hostage for the last hour and a half are so we are hearing word of gunfire inside that theater. so we are trying to keep eyes and the ears peeled for that situation. we will tepe you updated -- we will keep you gyp dated. at least 60 dead. we believe a hundred more held hostage. maureen: breaking news coverage of the paris attack continues next on "world news tonight" with david muir.
6:30 pm
leon: follow up u breaking news. as we come on the air tonight, paris under attack. multiple deadly shootings and explosions. among them, near the country's main sports stadium. the president of france raced to safety. and a siege under way, with many hostages inside. and word the attacks included at least one paris restaurant. dozens believed dead. our entire team is on this, a special edition of "world news tonight" begins now. good evening. we begin tonight with the horror unfolding in paris as we come on the air. that city under attack. doze
