hour. wi are seeing a stretch 395. triple your time if you are traveling. that is a look at traffic. back to you. alison: thank you. okay. so as the temperatures drop we all start to think about snow. doug: the big story all year is the talk of the strong el ninos with the water temperatures warm. this is one of the strongest on record. often we don't take this into factor to make the winter weather outlook. the past two winters had above average snowfall and below average temperatures.
5:48 pm
that hasn't occurred in back-to-back winters since 1986 of, 1987. couple that with last february being the coldest month in 20 years and featuring a low temperature of 5 degrees which was the coldest night since 1996. will this went ber a three-peat of the snow and cold or will we get a break? among the factors to determine the weather is a strong el ninos. this shifts the weather patterns for part of the united states, it doesn't make the winter forecast easier. of the six winters that have been similar, three featured well above average snowfall and three were well below average. two of those winters we received under one-half inch of snow. the historical record isn't much of a help to forecasters either so we rely on other variables. bottom line the main atmospheric steering patterns controlling the polar air locked over northern canada
5:49 pm
show no immediate signs of shifting. if you are a snow lover you could still be in luck. the winters feature a sub stop call jet, which -- subtropical jet and if it develops and interacts with a polar jet at the right time can still result in an east coast snowstorm. my winter weather forecast is in agreement with the rest of the storm watch 7 weather team and it calls for below average snowfall and mere to slightly above temperatures this winter. potential for a major coastal storm cannot be ruled out we believe the seasonal snowfall will be lighter than last winter and lower than the seasonal averages. so we are calling for 8 to 12 inches as a season snowfall, less in southeast. more snow north and west and even in those areas it's not nearly as much as average. i wouldn't count on too many days off school and work
5:50 pm
because of the snow. but the winter is it what it is. we'll see what happens. alison: we had a lot last year. doug: we have had big snow for the last two years. so let's go forward with the short term. the talk of snow, one more thing to throw at you. what about a nor'easters? even without a lot of snow we can still have one. but the best chance is mid-to-late february through early march. we will see what happens this time around. in the meantime talk about the numbers. it's comfortable outside. the mid-40's north and west of town. 51 in the reagan airport. cold temperatures, 27 to 37 degrees. overnight lows. winds are light. that will allow us to maximize the temperatures. as we have overnight to sunrise tomorrow. the three-day outlook here. you will notice one hing on temperatures. that they will rise. 53 tomorrow.
5:51 pm
friday 64 and sunshine. beyond that. we are in good shape. tell you about the travel conditions tomorrow. it's ideal along the east coast and the mid-atlantic. temperatures in the 50's. rain and thunderstorms through ellicott city. on the east coast it's quiet. somehowers in the southeast. we lucked out this thanksgiving holiday for sure. i'll get out of the way for a full screen look at this. the next seven days show the temperatures are rising. then clouds, shower or two. late in the everything. 56. better chance of the scattered showers sunday, monday, tuesday. i have done enough damage. back to you. alison: all right. leon: okay. alison: we like that report. sounds good. leon: no polar vortex. alison: doug's favorite. leon: all right. how about a vortex of controversy surrounding a guy who can't run from it. especially he gets in his own -- erin: he gets in his own way and on a continuous
