the whopper of them all, the smith environmental center in durwood, which emitted 11.9 picocurry of radon. that is under three times the e.p.a. limit. >> 11 is high. that is a danger level. kevin: jim is a certified master radon tester and instructor and has been in the business for 30 years. >> these are high levels. for my kids, i wouldn't allow them in this building or the rooms that were tested to be at the level. kevin: today, mpcs told us they take radon seriously and is plan topping retest the problem classrooms. as far as we know, they have not released the report of the parents with the high radon levels. we also don't know what plans the school system has to remediate the potentially deadly gas. in gaithersburg, kevin lewis, abc7 news.

a thousand soldiers were stationed throughout the city as a precaution. meanwhile here at home, security is high around public transit. as we enter the busiest transit time of the year. president obama is offering assurances that there is no signs of eminent threat. president obama: it's understandable that people worry. something similar could happen here. watching events in paris made the threat feel closer to home. as we go to thanksgiving weekend i want the american people to know that we are taking every possible step to keep the homeland safe. >> brianne carter is live at union station where the homeland security secretary jasonon spoke a short time ago. what did he have to say? >> the president and the secretary meeting earlier today. president getting a briefing. echoing what the president there just said. that there is no known credible threat. but he says that everyone should be vigilant.

reported two black teens acting suspiciously around a bank a.t.m. alison: meanwhile, more protest and growing outrage in chicago over a video that is showing the police shooting a block teenager 16 times. the shooting of 17-year-old laquan mcdonald happened in october of last year. but some angry community members want to know why it took so long to release the dash cam video and bring the charges against the officer responsible. officer jason van dyke charged with first-degree murder yesterday. they settled a lawsuit with mcdonald's family for $5 million. meanwhile, 93% of the businesses damaged in the baltimore riots in april have reopened. the baltimore development corporation says more than 400 businesses were impacted in all. the rioting and the looting followed the death of freddie gray in police custody. six officers have been charged in gray's death. leon: 30 years. that is the sentence for the man admitted to killing a father who was trying to break

up a fight. deon warren pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for the 2014 murder of mitchell white. as maryland bureau chief brad bell reports tonight, the confrontation was caught on video. brad: an emotional scene in and out of court as the family of 39-year-old mitchell white saw the man who pleaded guilty to killing white last september sentenced to 35 years behind bars. it was september 30, last year when mitchell white went to the belair swim club next to bowie high school break up a fight. what happened next was caught on camera. suddenly in the scene runs 19-year-old deon warren. you can see them wave a gun. you can see him pop the gun.

alison: fair county police released a video that is captivating. a flight crew of fairfax one a police helicopter helped save the live of the family of four. three were children. this is what happened. the crew spotted the fire near the family home this month in the 34400 of altura court. the infa red camera used by the crew to pip point the blaze. no one was injured. right place at the right time. leon: amazing stuff. unfortunately we see more this time of the year than we do normally. a "7 on your side" consumer alert. more fires are reported on thanksgiving day in the u.s. than they are on any other day of te year. there are 1,300 kitchen fires on the big day. the best way to stay safe is

speed cameras installed. some people in hyattsville say a stretch of road is too dangerous. as tom roussey reports the requests are being heard. tom: route one, aka baltimore avenue in hyattsville is a bustling place. with a problem. >> as we first told you two nights ago folks are worried not just by the number of accidents but by how many involve cars crashing into buildings. >> our building has been hit twice. one from one direction. >> the fear is next time it will hit a person not a building. >> the folks express concern. >> jake says there is an increase in crashes and the officials are looking for ways to make route one safer including changing the timing of light. >> the timing of the lights make it hard to get across the street. before they run across the street when they shouldn't. >> see the bushes? they are talking about raising

the bushes up. what they would put under is it a barrier that would serve to protect the pedestrians from the wayward cars. the thing they want is a camera. hyattsville police say the state denied the town permission for cameras a few years ago. since then they have seen a ton of places to live going up near route one. >> we have more pedestrians and marking. tom: city officials walked route one with a state official on monday. the hope is this time the state will not reject the request. in hyattsville in prince george's county i'm tom roussey, abc7 news. leon: the former fairfax county police officer charged in a 2013 murder won't go to trial next month. the judge agreed to postpone the trial for adam torres because a key witness for the defense wouldn't be available. it has been rescheduled for next april.

alison: so for many it's a question of etiquette. we at abc7 are always careful to make sure we address prince george's county by the full name. not the initials. but a new shoe is bringing the debate over prince george's versus p.g. in spotlight. brad bell explains. brad: seat pleasant is the neighborhood where kevin durant grew up, where the nba superstar learned to play. now he wants to pay tribute

moving. not at the best pace but at least we are moving. i want to talk about slow we are past this place. the traffic is bumper to bumper. also on 95 in maryland. the baltimore washington barkpay is 11 miles per hour heading south. moving to talk about the 95 in maryland as well as the b.w. parkway, 95. it's not too bad. if you have to get to baltimore, catch the flight. i would suggest that not taking the baltimore washington parkway and using 95. through laurel we're almost in the 50's. the traffic on 95 from the capital beltway will take 30 minutes.

delicious. thank you. leon: the weather will cooperate. alison: we love to hear this. doug: good stuff. let's start off with historical thanksgiving day weather information on the capital. the last time we had snow and heavy snow at that on thanksgiving is 1989. 1.9 inches at reagan national. let the record show i did forecast that close to accurately the day before. the warmest day is 77 degrees in 2007. in 1930, the coldest on record 30 degrees in the morning. i did not forecast the day before in 1930. i had the day off. tomorrow it will be a couple degrees above average. the tropical storm and the hurricanes and thanksgiving don't go together. but this is the ninth major hurricane of the eastern pacific season. hurricane sandra.

leon: breaking news from landover. tom roussey just arrived on the scene of a shooting there. what can you tell us now? tom: you can see behind me, a huge presence. this is the focus of the investigation. summer ridge apartment complex. this is a homicide investigation i'm told. there are officers on scene. we don't have many details but we are told in response to a shooting and they found a man shot and killed up the road in the apartment complex. reporting live, i'm tom roussey, abc7 news. maureen: thank you. maureen: a feast of sharing brought hundreds to the convention center.

now. announcer: now "abc7 news at 6:00". on your side. leon: necessary and reasonable is how the d.c. police are describing the officers' actions in a controversial incident. maureen: the video showing teens forcibly restrained last month went viral. a new police report says the officers were justified. leon: stephen tschida live with the story. stephen: they launched an investigation because of what jason goolsby and his attorneys said happened. the investigation said that the officer acted appropriately and that goolsby putting his hand in the backpack and refusing to remove it complicated the situation. the cell phone video of a teenager on the ground creaming at the officer.
