now. announcer: now "abc7 news at 6:00". on your side. leon: necessary and reasonable is how the d.c. police are describing the officers' actions in a controversial incident. maureen: the video showing teens forcibly restrained last month went viral. a new police report says the officers were justified. leon: stephen tschida live with the story. stephen: they launched an investigation because of what jason goolsby and his attorneys said happened. the investigation said that the officer acted appropriately and that goolsby putting his hand in the backpack and refusing to remove it complicated the situation. the cell phone video of a teenager on the ground creaming at the officer.

today chief cathy lanier said the witness account debunk jason goolsby's account on what went down the october day. >> we feel that the actions given the entirety of the circumstances were appropriate. >> he ran through traffic with the officers responding to suspicious behavior and that he refused to remove his hand from a back pack and ignored demands. >> i'm sure there is anxiety when he sees a person run with a backpack and reaches in and refuses to take his hand out of the backpack. >> there was a news conference. >> if the young men were white none of this would happen. >> the woman who called 911 because they were in a high robbery neighborhood, the chief says she did the right thing. >> people think you can't call the police if you feel like there is something suspicious or you will be criticized for

they are reminding you to be vigilant. >> a visible stepped up security presence as so people are traveling. they can see the stepped up presence on the trains as well. safety and the security has been on the minds of many heading in and out of town today. his administration is doing everything to keep the homeland safe. president obama speaking at the white house said there is no credible threat to the u.s. but counterterrorism intelligence and the homeland security officials are all working overtime. >> they are continually monitoring the threats at home and abroad and evaluating the security mossture. they are constantly working to protect all of us. >> the homeland security spoke earlier today at the union station echoing what the

president said as well. he said officials are monitoring the developments overseas and at home and looking at potential for the copy cat acts like overseas or the lone actor of terrorism. both the secretary and president obama said if you see something say something. otherwise go about the traditionable thanksgiving get-togethers and going to the events that you usually would in daily routine. brianne carter, abc7 news. maureen: the final preparation are underway for the man wall macy's day parade in new york city. security will be tighter than at any time after september 11. the nypd will deploy the counterterrorism unit for first time. security will include thousands of officers, mobile cameras, helicopters and the bomb sniffing dogs.

leon: we have breaking news we are following from landover. tom roussey arrived on the scene of a shooting and has been working the story. what is the latest? what have you learned? tom: i will step out of the way. we have seen the detectives and the crime scene investigators arriving. in the distance is the focus of the investigation. summer ridge apartments in the landover area. basically we are not far from the football stadium.

you can see some of the investigators on the scene there. we know this is a homicide investigation. police were called to the scene of a shooting. they arrive and found the man dead. we are waiting for information from the police. leon: good eyes and quick thinking may have stopped a tragedy in fairfax. the crew aboard a fairfax one spotted a fire in a home this month. maureen: what they did next may have saved the lives of four people including children. jeff goldberg reports. jeff: from 1200 feet out the images left little doubt.

inside the home, simone miller had no idea what was going on outside. >> it was a shock. >> 3:30 a.m. on november 1. the fairfax county police helicopter squad was returning to base from a burglary call when the officers on board noticed the fire next to the home. they needily called fairfax -- they immediately called fairfax city fire on scene. she was startled but the message was clear. she woke her grand children to rush them to safety. the fire contained on the front deck. >> it sits up in the front left. >> that is where the lenses are. infrared.

>> an amazing feeling. to look and see how extreme the fire was it was logical it would spread and engulf the house. >> but it didn't. and she was thankful someone was watching from above. leon: the fire did not reach the house. the cause is unknown but it started in the shed there. maureen: it wouldn't be thanksgiving in washington without the presidential turkey pardon. this afternoon president obama gave turkey's abe and his backup honest a presidential pardon. the president used the event to poke fun at the would-be successor. president obama: for months there has been a fierce competition between a bunch of turkeys trying to win their way in the white house. maureen: okay.
