authorities now say the threat that forced a paris bound flight to make an emergency landing legs -- late last night was a false alarm. the flight was headed to paris from san francisco but was diverted to montreal after an anonymous unspecified threat. inspectors searched the plane and found nothing. an investigation will be carried out into the origin of the threat. tongs are getting back normal at catholic university after a scare overnight. police descended and told to stay inside after an armed man approached a custodial worker last night. allegedly demanded to know the location of the administration building. d.c. police searched the building for explosives but found nothing. they are still trying to track down the suspect. checking on the forecast now. it does not feel like december. let's get to chief meteorologist doug hill. cloudiness.e some

in the meantime, firefighters are trying to figure out what sparked an overnight house fire in capitol heights. flames reg out around 2:00 this morning -- broke out around 2:00 this morning. now, a frantic search continues for a teenager who went missing on her way to the airport. the family of 19-year-old caitlin aiken says they -- katelin akens says they dropped her off at the franconia springfield metro, but she never got to the airport. her luggage showed up in a drainage ditch near fredericksburg. anyone with information should call spotsylvania county police immediately. a jury has awarded a muslim cap driver 300 50,000 drivers after a passenger attacked him because of his faith. spoke with him shortly after he was assaulted.

punched the iraq war veteran. he recorded part of the incident on his cell phone. oscar pistorius is out on bail while awaiting sentencing for murdering his girlfriend. a judge granted bail and house arrest to the double-amputee olympian pending sentencing. his case has been postponed until april. an appeals court overturned his previous conviction for culpable homicide and found him guilty of murder. turning to the race for the white house. senator bernie sanders in baltimore this noon. he just wrapped up a meeting with african-american religious leaders there. he toured the area where freddie gray was arrested. andmurder sparked riots charges against six officers. >> some people think this is a

news story. it's not. the good news is this thing has revolutionized visibility. so that now whether it's the mcdonald case or the freddie freddie gray case, we now see things on television that before were swept under the rug. jummy: he said that combating poverty as well as baltimore's surging murder rate must be national priorities. have rested their case in the trial of one of six officers charged in freddie gray's murder. yesterday the medical examiner took the stand, saying his death may not have been ruled a homicide officers had taken him to the hospital after his arrest. he died of injuries he sustained in the back of a police van. the judge sent the jury home for the day. the defense will begin its case wednesday. coming up, must-see video of a train crashing into a car.

>> you're watching abc 7 news at noon. on your side. year: today marks one since a tragedy in gaithersburg. six people died when a private jet crashed into a home.

that included a woman and her two young children. it looks like the pilot lost control, but the ntsb is still trying to determine the exact cause. at least a dozen people were injured in an overnight crash near atlanta involving an ambulance, a bus, and another vehicle. the bus operated by emory university slammed into a business. at least one person was taken to the hospital in critical condition. the cause of the crash is under investigation. a frightening crash here between a train and a car in florida. a white honda civic got stuck on the tracks. neighbors tried to help push the car free. driver and passengers stepped away seconds before the train careened right into their car. the trains operator told police he saw the car but didn't have enough time to stop the train. luckily, no one was hurt.

onay a meeting is scheduled proposed changes to i-66. the department of transportation will update the public on the progress of the transform 66 inside and outside the beltway project. the meeting will be held from p.m. george mason high school in falls church. last month, i-66 was named the worst freeway in the country. volunteers are getting back to those who served our country. john gonzalez has details. two: christmas has arrived weeks early for about 300 military families here in the d.c. area. this party includes volunteer caorling choirs, and good old saint nick. he's a marine stationed at quantico. let me show you around.

holidays have arrived early for these military families here. back to you. jummy: great to see that. it is the time of year where we start seeing more acts of kindness. more than 20 people got a surprise from some secret santa's. jeannette reyes has the story. jeannette: christmas came early for nearly two dozen families and caught them totally offguard. most were speechless. families placed there would be gifts on layaway to pay them off overtime. today, dozens of those gifts were paid in full with a card and signature from complete strangers. >> i'm like, there's a couple more things i really wanted. i should have put it in there. jeannette: they might as well be called santa's helpers, but they go by the name pay away the layaway. that's exactly what they do in 30 cities all around the country

every year. today they showed up at arlington coat factory in falls church and dished out $1500. >> a friend of mine started this organization and it has grown every year since. for the past couple of years, my friend rachel and i have come out to recognize -- to represent the organization in the d.c. area. jeannette: they have raised $100,000, all of it given away to make sure children everywhere wake up to presence under the tree on christmas morning. >> it's a great way to be in the holiday spirit. i'm really happy because my nephew has some gifts to play with. jummy: it's the season for giving. drive forolding a toy toys for tots online. just had to our website for more details on how you can help. that is good to see. doug: a lot of wonderful people

jummy: now to a health alert. researchers say a flavor and chemical linked to severe respiratory disease can be found in most e-cigarettes. the harvard university study says more than 75% of e-cigarettes contain that chemical that has been linked to a debilitating respiratory disease known as popcorn lung. more and more people are using gps to track their stolen packages. one police department has used packages placed on porches as bait. when a case takes the package, police moving.
