temperatures rise. i know it sounds crazy. to have fog and areas of patchy rain overnight. strength of the warm front coming up, the winds will turn south/southwesterly and increase in speed and become breezy. by early christmas eve morning as we check out the christmas cast we start off with the 60's. without sunshine we'll still hit 74. 30% chance of showers. not many on christmas day with a peak of sunshine and high of 69. a big travel night the day before, the day before. and our brianne carter is live in mobile track 7 on 395 in northern virginia. i assume it's no picnic out on the roadways. brianne: not at all, doug. all the rainmaking things a lot more difficult for travelers. take a live look from the front of mobile track 7. you can see actually it looks like we are moving faster than we are. it has been a bit of speeding up and bumper to bumper. that pattern we have seen since getting on 395. heading toward 95 south in northern virginia. we expect it to be that way.

a.a.a. saying because of the low gas prices so many people expected to travel and this day is expected to be the worst of all of that holiday travel between now and just after the new year. we do expect that nine out of ten people traveling 50 miles away from washington will be doing so just like we are behind the wheel. so it is slow go getting started in the everything rush. and the rain only complicating matters here. we will continue to update the traffic throughout the evening in mobile track 7. reporting live, brianne carter, back to you inside. kimberly: all right, thank you. if you're not driving but flying instead you might notice increase security rat the airport. the t.s.a. body scanners may be mandatory this time for some passengers. that is new this year. the policy going into effect a couple of days ago. all passengers used to have the option of requesting a pat-down.

instead going through if scanners. some people may have the request rejected. brianne carter is busy today. she will detail that policy at 6:00 tonight. stay connected with abc7 during the holidays, even if you are headed out of town. find us on facebook, twitter and online at wjla.com. for forecast update download the storm watch 7 weather app right to your phone. jonathan: in other news now, we continue to follow a developing story in montgomery county. frank trujillo charged with murder and in court today for something that happened over the weekend. kimberly: he is accused of gun doing a close friend in at-home holiday gathering and claims he was protecting his family. montgomery county reporter kevin lewis spoke with defense attorneys and prosecutors today. i imagine they have two sides of one story. kevin? kevin: yeah. everyone acknowledges that he fatally shot mario perez. the disagreement centers on why he did it. the defense says this was all an act of self-defense. however, the prosecution says

this was a case of premeditated murder. around 12:30 monday morning, a 911 call led montgomery county police to the trujillo home where they found perez dead with a gunshot wound to the chest. trujillo told officers perez was drunk and threatening and said he didn't back down when a gun was presented. in court he said perez was a retired marine with mixed martial arts training and supposed a serious threat inside the house. however, prosecutors argued trujillo did not need to bring a lethal weapon in the altercation. a judge ultimately denied bond. trujillo's wife broke down in tears after learning trujillo will remain behind bars indefinitely. >> we see this case as a case of premeditated murder. he went to the backroom and got a gun. introduced that element to the environment which escalated

the situation beyond what it had to be. >> there is no place to retreat. your home is your castle, you are in your home. you have your family in there. you don't want them harmed. that is this case. kevin: it's worth knowing that his two young sons and a third child were inside the house at the time of the shooting. new at 5:00, hear what trujillo's boss had to say in court. kevin lewis, abc7 news. jonathan: thank you. a body found in a creek off northwest branch trail in silver spring last night, at this point police are investigating but waiting to get the autopsy results to see if foul play may be involved here. at this point police have not released the victim's name yet. kimberly? kimberly: it is hard to believe that it has been more than a year since a roadway in piscataway hills and a neighborhood in fort washington has been shut down. people had to walk to their homes. they couldn't take their cars. the hillside broke away displacing families and causing millions of dollars in damage and much-needed

repairs. our kellye lynn has the update now from fort washington. everybody back home? kellye: yes, things are look good, kimberly. after many months of inconvenience. things are getting back to normal for the families who live here in piscataway hills. i was in may of 2014 this went terribly wrong. the land as you mentioned moving. and forcing the road below to be destroyed. several families were displaced. they were forced to park the cars and head to the homes on foot. >> they started the construction this past june. no vehicles were allowed. so we had a week, everybody hiked into their houses. kellye: so now life is getting back to normal. coming up new at 5:00, we will tell you what residents hope will come next. reporting live in fort washington, kellye lynn, abc7 news. kimberly: yeah, i bet they'd like to see the "road closed"

through the investigation that marijuana was being sold by the two suspects. we want to show you the photos of the vehicles that were seized in the investigation which include a 1999 mercedes s.u.v. also advertising the kushgod.com and the marijuana logos on the vehicles. authorities arrested 30-year-old nicholas cunningham and 18-year-old evonne lidoff yesterday after an investigation to narcotics operation. 14th and u and 8 and 18th street in northwest d.c. they also seized $1,500. >> there were two type of marijuana products that we became aware of in the course of the investigation. it was what is known as edibles. which are lack of a better general term is candy-like objects with t.h.c. in them. then also marijuana in the form that people are more commonly refer to as a weed-like substance.

diane: possession of marijuana in the district had been legal since february but illegal to sell it. in the northwest d.c., diane cho, abc7 news. jonathan: thanks. we have breaking news right now out of oxon hill. prince george's police opened fire on a guy they believe was holding a gun inside the car. that man has been arrested. police were called to clarion court for a suspicious car. that is where the confrontation took place. we have just learned that the suspect was not hit by police fire. and again now is in police custody. as soon as we get more information about what happened here, we will let you know. kimberly: a couple charged in a bizarre home inflation in mclean last year appeared in a fairfax county courthouse today for a hearing. they are both lawyers and alicia had been fired from lee owe fisher's law firm before the couple forced their way to the mclean home last november, tied him and his wife up and stabbed them.

when officers finally caught the couple as they were driving away they say andrew was wearing nothing but an adult diaper. very strange case. lakeisha holloway, the woman who police say was behind the wheel of a car that plowed through crowds on the las vegas strip this weekend was in court today. one person died when she plowed into the crowd. dozens of others were injured. holloway faces three counts including an unusual one. murder with a car. her lawyers are expecting more charges to come. jonathan: well, coming up here on "abc7 news at 4:00" -- how a korean band legal victory could be a win for the redskins. kimberly: and still on abc7 news at 4:30 if you think your artificial christmas tree is safer than the regular christmas tree, the same risks apply. how fast a small fire can get out of control coming up. the clock is ticking. the holiday packages have to

jonathan: the redskins could be closer, at least soon to ending the trademark battle involving the team name. a federal appeals court ruled in a similar but unrelated case and found the first amendment allowed trademark protection for an asian american rock band that has the name some might find offensive. the u.s. patent and trademark office refused to protect the redskins name in the recent review. kimberly: precedent. interesting. the clock is ticking depending on where you ship the holiday gifts. only a few hours left to get them on the truck and on way to the loved ones. jonathan: joce sterman has the last-minute rush for all the procrastinators out there. joce: yeah. you are almost out of time, guys. we are at the ups store in arlington. the last pickup at 6:30. i have the last package to send. put it on the scale. they said they would take care of it for me. there is still time. you still have some options. we went out to talk to people

the roads. >> the rush hour started earlier this afternoon. it's in full effect this afternoon. the roads have been closed down. due to a crash. both sides are now open. as you can see on the right-hand side the northbound seeing heavy delays as a result of that earlier crash. we are checking out 66. the beltway out toward manassas. you can look now at the southbound 95. it doesn't look bad on this camera. for the most part from fairfax county parkway to the fredericksburg area. earlier crash on the 14th street bridge is cleared up. you can see the residual effect is felt there. for those on the capital beltway, a look at north of the american legion bridge. it look like delays on both sides. inner loop delays will take you to college park. that is the latest for now. now we go to jonathan.

jonathan: thank you for that. some folks on the west coast got a show in the sky and they didn't know what it was. look at this. fireball streaking across the horizon. there it is. u.s. strategic command says this is actually a russian space debris. re-entering the atmosphere. nothing put together. just junk. they say it was the body of an old rocket returning to earth. you can see it best in nevada and part of california where there are clear skies. that is what it was. kimberly: some people freak out about the weather, too. if it were colder it would be snow. how great would that be? doug: that is the key to the winter. we will get cold snaps in january and february. if we get a coastal system like this with a cold snap, that is how we get the snow. but if not we get more of this. that is the winter forecast. see you later. jonathan: see you in february, doug. doug: temperatures are rising though we had zero sunshine.

heavy fog and rain. 63 in the rain at reagan national airport. take a look at the other numbers around the region. 62 reported in hay market. silver spring in 62. arlington is 63. everybody else is over one-half inch and counting. still heavy rain to the south of the metro washington. this is orange and the yellow with the heaviest areas. south to carolina county and virginia. that is moving northward. ahead of a warm front. it is doing its thing to us with the temperatures rising. some areas may see the temperatures hold steady or rise another degree or two overnight. closeup shows the heavy rain to montclair and stafford. it's more widespread across the region. we have rain on the east coast. the other side of the appalachians. we have all kind of issues there with the possibility of

severe thunderstorms, severe thunderstorm watches. tornado watches, too. possibility some of the tornadoes could be dangerous. a real mess. we have snow in minnesota. it will be down south in the pan-hand with the snowstorm. we have temperatures overnight between 58 and 64 degrees. craziness. isolated showers. patchy fog. winds will pick up from the south at 10 to 15 miles per hour. future cast shows by late tonight the steadiest rain may move out of the area. patchy rain and fog. overnight the cloudy skies, get to christmas eve tomorrow. it looks like we could have rain moving through, maybe a heavier downpour and rumble of thunder somewhere. the cold front moves through the area. then we stay unsettled. maybe a glimpse of sunshine we get through thursday christmas eve, afternoon or evening. who knows? sunshine christmas day. mild. 74 is a possibility for a high tomorrow. that would be a record high.

jonathan: presidential candidates on both sides said recent political attacks crossed the line. senator ted cruz has been critical of a washington post cartoon that depicted his children as monkeys. while hillary clinton says donald trump's description of her during a recent campaign stop went too far. we have the mud-slinging. reporter: ted cruz turned alleged insult to ammunition. the "washington post" took down the editorial cartoon that depicted his two daughters as trained monkeys but not before cruz forwarded it to supporters for a fundraising appeal. >> you can attack me.

we appreciate it. back to you. jonathan: police continue the investigation of robbery and shooting in alexandria section of fairfax county. we explain what happened. >> this is a strip mall they don't associate with violence. >> it's calm and a wonderful area to live in. >> the call came in at 11:30. fairfax police said a man entered the store, showed he had a gun that proceeded to take a laptop. an employee stepped in and stepped up to the criminal. >> all we know is they employed the suspect. >> the gun went off and struck the employee in the hand.
