that is when it was really scary. reporter: from tennessee to mississippi. >> we had this great big -- like a train. and then it was gone. reporter: at least two dozen reported tornadoes touched down cutting in half the destruction and meeting many homeless. >> it is devastating. >> it's very heartbreaking. i don't even have the words to explain it. reporter: the damage is so widespread a state of emergency has been declared in mississippi and tennessee. they are meaning the process of recovery -- beginning the process of recovery and rebuilding. >> this is a well organized effort and we will recover. reporter: mother nature is still on the move. the same storm system is now triggering dangerous flash flooding in parts of georgia and alabama. the chief of police says it will help officers and the community. body cameras have become popular because of questions surrounding the use of force about people seeing what police are up against on the street. kimberly: around the nation a march on chicago's magnificent mile. community organizers and protesters are calling it black christmas. they are calling for the mayor rahm emanuel to resign. protests have taken place in chicago since video showing an officer gunning down a man was released. the officer was charged with murder more than year after shooting mcdonald 16 times. jonathan: in charlotte police at it shoot and kill it suspected gunman at a mall. this is northlake mall. it was crowded with shoppers. dozens of officers responded. we are told there were people racing out of the mall when shots were ringing out.

it's not clear if anyone else was hurt and it does appear the man with the gun was taken down. when we get more information, we will get it to you right away. the latest on the campaign trail. there are reports of the number of republican presidential candidate eligible for the next debate could be just six. the next debate is in iowa in january. just six of the candidates are receiving enough support in the most recent round of rolling. -- polling. that is not a limit for how many will be allowed on stage. john kasich and rand paul would not make the cut. .oming up on abc 7 news, christmas eve celebrated all across the world kimberly: tomorrow to see some controversial ads during the nba game. the political stand that the league in some of its players taking today. a 12-year-old boy who overcame a serious disease is trying to help others going through the same battle.

year's eve. each one bears the name of a loved one for whom it is dedicated. they symbolize a welcoming path in the hearts for the peace and joy brought by the holy -- jonathan: there is a young man, a 12-year-old that came over -- overcame a liver disease. kimberly: chris takes is the gaithersburg where he is trying to strike out liver disease. reporter: on the outside he appears to be the average, everyday kid. but he has a pretty unique story. earlier this year he was diagnosed with acute liver failure. he credits the doctors admit start georgetown university hospital are saving his life. now he is still recovering and trying to get back. 6:00, them 9:00 to donations are going to be going to the liver transplant clinic

west of d.c. harrisonburg will get in on the sunshine as the clouds roll back in. that is just in time for tomorrow night and into early saturday morning. here is the forecast for this evening. temperatures still well above average for this time of year. we are looking at temperatures in the 60's. they will stay in the 60's overnight. a little cooler in the northwestern suburbs. the high tomorrow around 70 degrees. ups and downs big-time. 70 on sunday and the front wiggles north of us. we get a 57 and 58 on tuesday and wednesday. this front we are talking about will hang around for the next four or five days and then go to the north and south. further south we get cool. jonathan: and because we don't have any extremes we will not have extreme weather. steve: one model once a few
