least 15 people are dead. the in tennessee, the river surging to the highest it's been in 11 years. >> there is the probably the worst flooding that i have ever witnessed. >> reporter: in missouri, rampant flood waters engulfed homes. swept away rvs and shut down major highways. overnight, st. louis sandbaggers preparing for more. >> our neighbors are totally under water. >> reporter: across the midwest, tiny neighborhood creeks morphing into dangerous bodies of water. >> this is liberty creek about 12 feet wide, right now it's probably every bit of 200 feet wide. >> reporter: in illinois, this flooded creek claiming the lives of two adults and their three children when their car was swept away.

and if the situation isn't bad enough the temperatures are hovering right around 40 degrees. so, it's a cold miserable rain and missouri is not alone. take a look at this -- 14 states under a flash flood watch. as this system pushes off to the knot and the east. look at this, snow on the backside of this. tornado watch out now for new orleans and parts of mississippi. se rear r veer weather will move off to the east. a huge multifaceted storm, david. >> all right, rob, watching it all. rob, thanks the deadly tornadoes tearing through texas, at least 11 people killed in the dallas area this weekend. hundreds of homes and building simply destroyed. abc's matt gutman is on the scene this morning with much morere for us. >> reporter: good morning, david. a sense of the devastation here, this goes on house after house. over a 40-mile stretch here in

north texas, mixing things like christmas stockings and cars. we're talking about places made out of brick and mortar. overnight, that tornado spewing out debris. this, after a string of tornadoes scarred a 40-mile swath of texas this weekend. police saying at least 11 were killed here in texas. >> just total disbelief. everything on the backside of my house was on the front side of my house. >> reporter: from the air, you can see the path the storm gouged, a football field lane reduce td to splinters. with the tornado bearing down, these people ducked into a freezer at chili's. this storm blowing out

transformers. in the pitch black, the lightning e illuminating the ef-4 tornado. on interstate 30, some motorists had nowhere to hide. in daylight, we drove through those devastated neighborhoods. the scope of the destruction in these neighborhoods is absolutely astounding. it nearly toppled rowlett's water tower. >> as far as the roof, everything is gone. >> reporter: she was saved when she and five family members crowded in their bathroom. >> very grateful we're alive. >> i spoke to the police chief of rowlett overnight, he said no one's talking a about the cleanup right now. all they're focusing on is clearing these mounds of debris and hazards from the roadways so people can come back and get their belongings. he said it could be months, years before they can rebuild these communities. this system bringing heavy

rain and wind for some, snow for others. palm trees in texas coated in snow. abc's clayton sandell is there now. >> reporter: good morning, amy, you can see the problem here in oklahoma, power lines have been snapped in half overnight. thanks to those high winds that have been blasting through this area and also this heavy ice as crow can see has coated the power lines here. in fact, 60,000 customers are without power this morning. you can see what it's done to the tree branches in this area. what's going to make the commute here dangerous this morning, a thick layer of ice on the roadways and highways. i want to show you how thick it is, it's about an inch where we are which means this area has been turned into one giant ice rink. >> clayton, thank you very much. >> incredible how thick that ice is. severe weather causing

headaches for travelers trying to get home now after the holidays. thousands of flights delays and abc's linzie janis live this morning in laguardia airport. >> reporter: the weather having a big impact on air travel, already this morning, more than 690 flights canceled across the country. now that comes on top of 1700 cancellations and 6,000 delays on sunday. one of the busiest travel days of holiday season. the worst-hit airports this morning, chicago o'hare, midway. and dallas is still bad after having a third of its flights affected on sunday. l.a. had a rough day sunday. millions of travelers now hoping today will be much smoother in the northeast. >> linzie, thanks so much. you'll have so much more on the travel impact tonight on "world news." the other news this monday

morning, and to chicago now, another deadly police shooting in a city already on edge. two people killed, including a grandmother. police saying her death was an accident and abc's alex perez is in chicago. >> the families of victims demanding answers. killed saturday after police were called to this house for a domestic disturbance. >> we got two people shot. shots fired by the police. just to confirm. >> yes, they were. >> reporter: le grier was reportedly threatening his dad with a bat. 55-year-old jones who lives on the ground floor was opening the door for police when she was caught in a spray of police bullets. >> >> upon their arrival, they were confronted by a combative individual. >> reporter: police say that jones was accidentally killed

leading into the primaries, but is this a strategy that will be effective going beyond that? >> well, as you said, amy, it works the one person most hated by republicans is hillary clinton. so, anything he does against her is helpful to him. in the end, their needs may go out. and donald trump is going to face some real problems if he wins the gop nomination in the general election. >> matt, this goes both ways. her going after trump, any downside for her. >> it helps her going after donald trump. it helps her there in the primaries. in the end just like donald trump i think she creates a problem for the general elections. where independent voters don't like this back and forth. >> trump has been the dominant figure in the republican race for 2015, looking forward to

step toward recapturing mosul. back in this country, fires at two muslim houses of worship are being called intentional. the fire bombing of a mosque near sacramento is being investigated as a possible hate crime. and a mosque in houston, a fire there. in los angeles, fiefrts said they could have this wildfire fully contained by tomorrow. the concern now is rain will trigger mudslides. a man in san diego, fell off a cliff in a scenic overlook, had been distracted by a cell phone. he was trying to take a picture when he walked over the edge. he did not survive. and look at these images the aftermath of a train derailment in a remote area of australia. the train was carrying sulfuric acid which could cause severe

burns. millions of americans have been suffering at the airports during the holidays. check out what happened to a business traveler named larry hendricks at the airport in atlanta. he was the 100 millionth passenger. they gave him a car and free round-trip tickets to anywhere in the world. but here's the kicker, all the hoopla forced him to miss his connecting flight. he's accepted all the gifts. however, he's now going to sue -- no, i made that up. >> thanks, dan. we'll turn now to that wild boat chase caught on camera. lasted 20 hours. alleged thieves taking on the coast guard on a nearly day long pursuit before they were caught. >> reporter: this morning, three suspects in custody after leading authorities on a 20-hour boat chase across the gulf of

mexico. >> they weren't going to quit. >> reporter: the wild hunt beginning thursday morning when these men allegedly stole a speedboat in florida, they said the thieves beating several antitheft devices. the pursuit spanning over 300 miles, trying to ram a sheriff's boat at one point in the chase. authorities saying the scene was something out of a james bond movie. >> luckily enough, we were able to get out of the way right at the last minute. >> reporter: the coast guard deploying three aircrafts to chase the men through the open waters. the authorities finally aprehending them on christmas morning. >> we'll go the extra mile, in this case, we had to go an extra 340 miles. >> reporter: deputies investigating an organized boat theft ring nearby at the time of the incident.

why, even if it's false, he'll have to show as a legal matter that there was quote, reckless disregard for the truth by al jazeera. that means, because he's public figure he'll have to show that al jazeera knew or should have known it was false. that's a much tougher legal standard. also when you're talking about defamation, if he sues, a lot of other stuff of his personal life end upcoming in, where there any damages, et cetera? in the end, i don't think he's going to do that. >> in the meantime of the video of the young man recanting that story, how big of a deal is that? >> yeah, that could help his lawsuit, i mean, he sues and he says it's false and they should have known it was false because he would argue, a little bit of investigating, a little pushing of this guy and you, too, would have been able to determine this was false. that would be a very important

williams and his girlfriend, 26-year-old bonnie were discovered in this suv, parked on a remote dirt road. >> just really feeling horrible for their families. >> reporter: police say one of the victims called 911 early friday morning. when officers arrived, they discovered that suvless than a mile from the couple's home, the victims in the front seat. dead, from gunshot wounds. >> shock. disgust. scary. >> reporter: authorities are now searching for information on the mysterious double homicide and are hoping to hear from anyone who had contact with them on christmas eve, leading to their deaths. >> anyone who saw or observed anything contact state police. >> reporter: families hoping for answers and closure for their loved one and amazing person. very outgoing. >> reporter: the suv has been found and towed for evidence.

five killed along i-30. the storm descending in the dark. they had nowhere to run or hide. that tornado illuminated only by the flashes of lightning inside. from the air, you can see that 100-yard scar that the tornado left in the earth here in texas. cars and trailers tossed like cars. i spoke a police chief here, they're not even talking about cleaning up, they're talking about digging out, getting rid of this debris and hazards so people can come and get their things. he said it could be months, maybe even years, before they rebuild these communities. dan. >> a long road ahead of them. meanwhile for millions of americans today, snow and ice the big problems. in new mexico and oklahoma, blizzard conditions trapped drivers with drifts up to 10 feet high. that storm now stretches all of the way to wisconsin. rob marciano's full forecast coming up shortly. the other big story which

appears to be major defeat for isis. iraqi forces saying they have now recaptured the strategic city of ramadi. chicago's mayor is demanding a review of how police handle calls after two people were shot and killed this weekend, including a 55 year-old grandmother and mentally disturbed teenager. police acknowledge the shooting of the woman was a mistake. the teen had allegedly threatened his father with a bat. some good news about childhood asthma, after increasing for decades. asthma rates are finally dropping off. british couple is celebrating a special christmas delivery, they're the proud owners of a cloned puppy. he's the first puppy produced from the dna of a dog deceased for more than five days.

♪ welcome back to "good morning america." madonna's papa don't preach was one of her hits. but right now, she's begging her son to come home, battling her ex for custody after 15-year-old rocco said he wants to stay with dad. kanya whitworth has the latest. >> reporter: over the weekend, madonna cherishing time with her family. the queen of pop taking to social media expressing her love for her four children. tweeted, writing merry xmas to the sun-shine of my life. >> reporter: she's currently imbroiled in a custody battle with her ex-husband guy ritchie over 15-year-old rocco, he's apparently living with his father in england and reportedly doesn't want to return to live with his mother in new york.

last wednesday, madonna asked a new york city judge to order his return from london. >> it's a little unclear exactly what's going on. it may be a case of a teenager growing up and having some rebellious spirit. recently, madonna said he really em bodes the heart. it's hard under the microscope. >> reporter: madonna photographed leaving court last week. the teen will reportedly get his own court-appointed attorney, which might allow him to make a request to live with his father if he still wants to. >> since september, madonna has been busy with her tour. he's been helping out backstage. >> reporter: madonna and ritchie divorced in 2008. abc news has reached out both to

madonna and guy ritchie and neither have responded. let's bring back abc news legal analyst dan abrams. rocco is 15 years old. does his opinion matter when the court hears this? >> it does matter. but he doesn't have the final say. he can't say i want to stay with dad and he stays with dad. he has to come home and have this litated in new york court. what will happen is, he'll be assigned an attorney, called a guardian who represents the child in this case, if he wants to live with dad, he'll tell his lawyer i want to live with dad, here are the reasons. he'll list the reasons. in all likelihood, if the guardian agrees these are good reasons, they would then recommend to the court, this is what my opinion is as

representative of the child is in this case. that could have a lot of sway in a court. there are a lot of issues here. >> likely this will take place in new york, any chance that guy could have this heard in britain, over in the uk. >> he could try but because the child is still considered a new york resident, i think almost certainly the british courts will say, they're dealing with this in new york. this is unlike kelly rutherford's case, they sent the kids to monaco and invited the monaco court to take over. you don't have anything like that here. certainly, you would have a new york court resolving it. it's certainly possible if rocco feels strongly about it. it should be very quick. now to a warning for parents

this morning about the hidden risks of pill boxes for your children. as so many travel to visit grand parents this holiday season, little ones could find their way into medicine that's not child-resistant. this is eye opening this morning and take a look at what dr. bezer heard. >> reporter: it's a sound no little kid should be making. clicking open a pill box. child-resistant caps are designed to help kids under five from getting into medications. in 2012, more than 64,000 children under 5, went to a emergency room for medicine poisoning and in cases, the medicine belonged to a parent or grand parent. with the help of a montclare school in new york, we got them together to see if they could open bottles. >> how do you open these?

>> yeah, i'm not going to tell you. >> reporter: but getting into weekly pill organizers easily opened by elderly is a different story. 3-year-old mar go opened this pill box in nine seconds. okay, you got that one open. that one opened up, gabriella? >> yes. >> reporter: let me see. >> use them for storage for toys or for arts and crafts. >> reporter: while 3 out of our 5 little kids broke into those boxes in under 15 seconds. our group of 4-year-olds were even faster. if you get it open, just open. got one open. katie got one open. 4-year-old kai got into a child-resistant bottle. every 4-year-old in our group

came out about being gay. >> he was having a midlife crisis and he -- >> i was struggling with my identity in american television. alex was starting to struggle with his own identity as a teenager. >> reporter: in new book, all out, they chronicles their journey of acceptance of one another but also themselves. your parents accepted you, even you talk about feelings of suicidal. >> i was nervous, i didn't know what my father would do. i had moments of proof while i was growing up that he disapproved of the lifestyle. >> for me, it was realizing over time that i was homophobic and i that i could always accept my

son. but i didn't always accept his friends and social settings. and that to me as a liberal-minded intellectual semismart man was disturbing and disappointing. it's a very dangerous transition, fraught with anger, confusion, but most of all, the fear of rejection. >> reporter: it took reporting on another family's gay son for a canadian documentary for newman to understand his own son. an evolution perfectly captured by this spontaneous photo. >> that met everything, ten years of wondering was over. >> i have a dream as a father out there that is frightened by their child's sexuality, they want to love their child. they're confused. they're uncertain and insecure. i hope that this book in that man's hands allows him to feel safe to open the conversation with their child.
