northeastern corner of kansas up through the portions of the minnesota, wisconsin across michigan, even the northern maine. those are the winter storm warning. the purple areas are the winter weather advisory for the possibility of freezing rain and sleet. on the bottom the area near us is no longer severe. it's just rain. we could get a fair amount of rain in the overnight hours. warm up that the temperatures will support rain only in our area. temperatures are now below mid-40's. will rise a few degrees tonight. wake up to temperatures, lower 50's southeast of tongue. mid-40s north and west of the city. morning showers and 51. warmer when you wake up than now. 58 with the sun breaking through at midday. 63 by tomorrow afternoon. get ready for more changes in the weather. more changes in the temperature. as we head through the next seven days. that is the latest on the weather center. leon: you got it. now weather problems in the middle of the nation are slowing things down at the airport. at one point in the afternoon, flights to chicago were delayed more than two hours. we will take a closer look at the severe weather in a few minutes right here.

the two-alarm blaze. one of the cameras was on captain dave eason's helmet. >> you just kind of, you are seeing all of the fire area and you are thinking try to get in there and make a push on it and try to save these people's house. suzanne: the fire started before dawn. two people got out safely as the house burned. >> we are seeing the flash coming off the walls because it's so hot. there was a lot of fire everywhere in the house. suzanne: i'm standing in what is left of the house you saw burning in the helmet camera video. the fire started where we are right now. there was a pool table right here. a space heater on top of it. firefighters here say this fire could have been avoided. captain eason says there is one element of what was shot that stands out to him. >> i think the most significant thing about the video is how fast it spread through the house. it was an old house. between the space heater to

the roof. once they got in that wall it just ran up to the attic. suzanne: the residents were amazed by the video as well. >> it's terrible. i'm sure they lost everything. their whole house, everything. suzanne: frightening. seeing it went up like that is amazing. suzanne: firefighters will use the video to critique themselves and to show residents the potential danger of improper use of space heaters. in kent county maryland suzanne kennedy, abc7 news. kellye: prince william county police are calling the death of two teenagers in october a murder-suicide. the bodies of 17-year-old lyle ferringer and indya davis were found in the back of a band near dawson park. today the investigation found davis killed ferringer before taking her own life. family members say the teens dated in the past. leon: new information tonight on a north potomac father who pleaded guilty to allow teenagers to drink shortly

before a deadly crash. montgomery county reporter kevin lewis joins us with what he learned about the night of the party. kevin: since june a lot of people wondered what level of negligence the father displayed at the underage drinking party. that took place in a home on this street. this sheds light on a drinking party at the home. the homeowner setsmen welcomed her daughter's friends. there were beer pong on the table and pillows covering the windows. the report explained that the kids pulled money to buy vodka and natty light beer. >> parents hosting parties is ridiculous. kevin: the montgomery county chief says this is condones what others feel is wrong. >> other parents are furious

because that parent makes the decision for them and they didn't enentitle or empower them and it's illegal. kevin: one boy that brought booze said that the owner greeted him at the front door saying "is one of those for me?" hours later one of the two died in a wreck. >> we pass law to prevent tragedies like what happened. but chose to ignore the law. had to pay the penalty. kevin: this report mentions that he didn't serve any of the liquor and adds some of the teens didn't see him in the house on the night of the party. he pleaded guilty to two disme dean mores last month and had to pay $5000 in fines but did avoid jail time. we are live in north potomac, i'm kevin lewis, abc7 news. leon: virginia state police are reporting a dip in the number of traffic fatalities over the christmas weekend. five people died on the roads

statewide. two of the deaths were in crashes involving alcohol. the same weekend last year saw eight fatalities and the year before 13 people died. kellye: a 13-year-old is fighting for her life after the a.t.v. she was riding on crashed into an s.u.v. on walkerville road in capital heights. the driver of the a.t.v. was killed. police are investigating, but people who live in area say a.t.v.'s driving on the roads is a big problem and getting worse. "7 on your side" chris papst picks up the story from there. chris? chris: kellye scatter dead bree at the memorial you see behind me just put up a couple of minutes ago is all that is left at the intersection after a terrible crash last night took the life of a 29-year-old man. police say he was driving an a.t.v. on the road illegally. neighbors say so many people do it it was just a matter of time. [sirens] the scene was horrific. last night at 5:45, police say an a.t.v. illegally traveled on walkerville road in capital

heights collided with an survivor. the.-year-old driver died. the 13-year-old girl in the back his stepdaughter remains in serious condition. sherry thomas took this video. and says every day a.t.v.'s speed up and down the street, popping wheelies and disrupting traffic. abc7 reported on the problem all around the d.c. metro area. >> we and the other neighbors are talking. wait, wait wait. we knew it would happen. >> it's a challenge for law enforcement to deal with the kind of vehicles. chris: driving an a.t.v. on the road is illegal. but julie parker with the prince george's county police say it is a difficult law to enforce. the policy does not allow the police to chase the a.t.v. unless the driver committed another more serious crime. the county is involved in the washington area vehicle enforcement or wave. a regional team that in part finds and arrests these a.t.v.

drivers. >> they don't want people to be doing illegal things on the roadways. but to an extent our hands are tied. chris: if you are caught driving a.t.v. illegally in prince george's county the fines and the penalties are steep. coming up at 6:00, we'll tell you what they are. live in capital heights chris papst, abc7 news. kellye: baltimore judge is delaying the start of the second trial in the freddie gray case. the case against officer caesar goodson was supposed to start january 6. it was delayed five days to allow the judge to hear pretrial motions. goodson was the driver of the police van where the medical examiner believed that gray suffered fatal injuries in a so-called "rough ride." six officers are chargedle in gray's death. the first trial ended in a hung jury and will be retried in march. leon: republican candidate donald trump launched multiple

attacks on twitter. he said hillary clinton used a "woman's card" and he slammed bill clinton. coming up at 6:00 jeff goldberg will look at the impact it could have on the state primary. kellye: al-jazeera reporter is standing by expose that accuses peyton manning and other athlete using human growth hormone. this comes after there are questions about the source at the center of the story. charlie, a former intern at antiaging clinic recanted his claim. he originally said that manning's wife received h.g.h. shipments in 2011. the future hall of famer denies the allegation and plans to sue al-jazeera for defamation. leon: on to more pleasant football topics. not only did the caps, wizards and the redskins all win a game on saturday the first

kellye: 24 people are dead. 11 in texas alone. severe weather rips across the nation. leon: this is a scene in dallas after two monster tornadoes touched down saturday. reporter: it was more than 80 degrees when the tornadoes ripped through now. they face cleaning up in the snow. a brutal storm system from new mexico to the midwest will not release the grip. this man in texas didn't mind cleaning up a of a tornado barreled >> it was like a movie. i was running toward my closet. the doors started caving in. >> in the midwest the system brought heavy flooding over the weekend to force a partial closure of i-70 in missouri.

leon: the white police officer who shot and killed an 12-year-old african-american boy in cleveland will not face criminal charges. that edeclined to indict if officer. elizabeth hur explained the decision and has the reaction. >> the grand jury declined to bring criminal charges. reporter: cuyahoga proc cuter mcginty announcing the grand jury decided not to charge either officer involved in the shooting death of 12-year-old tamir rice. >> simply put given the perfect storm of the human error the mistakes and the miscommunication by all involved the evidence did not indicate criminal conduct by police. reporter: rice was shot and killed by officer timothy loehmann seconds after they arrived at a cleveland playground last year. two months ago the grand jury was determining if the officer or his partner officer frank garmback was criminally responsible in rice's death. the officers maintained they believed the 12-year-old was armed. it turned out to be a b.b.

attack last week. >> a new sign after the owner rost her son in afghanistan last week. talk peter taub was one of six killed in suicide attack. he worked in the special investigation in air force. his mother owned the shop. it has been temporarily closed for a few days after the family learned of what happened. this was the first day to reopen. this past week has been difficult for her and her fanly. he had planned to join the family in the restaurant business. he leaves behind a pregnant wife and 3-year-old daughter. so go fund me page has been started and this afternoon $46,000 has been raised.

diane cho abc7 news. leon: let's check the top stories now. fire that tore through a home before christmas. the firefighter's helmet camera shows the efforts to save the home. it was started by a space heater. kellye: a 13-year-old girl is hurt after a crash involving an s.u.v. and all-terrain vehicle. last night's crash killed jerome odom of capital heights. the girl was on the back of the a.t.v. and was thrown off in the crash. the driver of the s.u.v. was not hurt. leon: soldiers were out training in missouri when floodwaters swept them off the road. kellye: there are growing fears of land slides in southern california after the recent wildfires including this one over the weekend.

heavy rains could lead to slides up and down the coast. leon: universities say a man using a cell phone walked off a cliff in san diego. he fell 60 feet to his death christmas day. the teen tried to help the man and broke out climbing gear. >> he was yelling help. a man ran out and told my mom to call 911. >> several good samaritans ran to help but it was too late. the victim's mother said her son was taking photos. kellye: the fate of a statue honoring soldiers in rockville may be resolved. the district commission voted 3-1 to move the statue away from the red brick courthouse.

enforcement officers that are turning to you for help. a look at jerry moore. maryland state police trooper assigned to the regional task force are looking for him in a violent attack on his girlfriend and in a shooting. he joins john james who is wanted for a murder in d.c. and william lewis who is wanted for murder in the district. in arlington, police are look for gutierrez charged with sexual assault of a minor. gonzalez-perez. wanted for assault and battery of a family member. now, let's set the wall of justice in motion and tonight the spotlight is on herson gutierrez. the police detectives need your help to find herson gutierrez. police say he sexually assaulted a minor on several occasions in 2003. his last known address was in woodbridge. there is some thought he may have thread back to el salvador. but police in arlington are vowing to find him. >> he sexually assaulted a young girl at the time was only 10. this case now has been open

jay: disturbing scene here. a neighborhood where the school is nestled. it is our understanding that a male body is on the other side of the school. but on school grounds and was found a short time ago. trauma to the body indicative of a homicide. not much more than that. we are expecting a press conference to get more information. we don't know the age of the male or the circumstances. there are no activities at the school today and the children are on at winter break. we will hopefully get more answers on the homicide investigation on the ground of an elementary school. back to you. leon: good deal. leon: coming up a traffic mess on the g.w. parkway.

this afternoon we got action. shortly after we contacted the company the listing was changed. the calls that once brought heartbreak and now again can be a signal of hope. >> we are hope that the process will work out for us. >> a "7 on your side" consumer alert. george washington university is banning students students from bringing hoverboard on campus. they cited concern from the consumer product safety board that they could pose a fire threat while charging. they mentioned the possibility of the injury from the falling off the hoverboard. the ban goes in effect january 1. leon: one of the devices that is blamed for a house that exploded yesterday in new jersey. fire investigators say it appears that a hoverboard caught fire while charging setting the house ablaze. no one was hurt. the consumer product safety commission is joining the investigation now. and reminding people to never leave your hoverboard charging
