announcer: from abc7 news, this is a breaking news alert. jonathan: we start this afternoon following breaking news out of prince george's county. kimberly: police are investigating what appears to be the first homicide of the year. a woman's body was found along the northwest branch trail in hyattsville. our stephen tschida is there live with what we know right now about this case. stephen: about 7:30 this morning, a man jogging along the trail discovered a woman's body. right behind me.

we have video of what went on here after the first 911 call went through. investigators got here and they determined indeed it's a woman's body. she is believed to be in her 20's. hispanic woman. investigators told me she had severe injuries to the upper body. but did not appear at the first sighting that she had been the victim of any type of a sexual assault. now, this is a popular trail here along eger road to the east-west highway. people walk and bike and walk to the metro station. at this time the medical examiner will do an autopsy to determine the cause of death. the woman had no identification on her. so still a quest to find out who she is. also prince george's county police will be taking over the investigation at this point since it most likely is indeed a homicide. that is the latest from hyattsville, reporting live, stephen tschida, abc7 news. kimberly: a dangerous day for pedestrians in the district. one person was killed in a

hit-and-run in southeast. and seven people were injured when a car jumped a curb and slammed into a group in northwest. that is where brianne carter is live for us now with new information on charges now filed the case. that was quick, brianne. brianne: absolutely, kimberly. take a look, this is happening outside the popular location. at this hour you can see debris on the sidewalk where people are standing. a mangled mess with this. this flower bed and the police tape that remains here. more than 12 hours after seven people were struck after a car jumped the curb here along l street. d.c. police telling abc7 25-year-old malik lloyd was driving along l street when a car struck another and jumped the car hitting seven people on the sidewalk. all seven of the victims were taken to the hospital. we understand he is now facing charges of driving under the influence and leaving after colliding. meanwhile in southeast d.c., a pedestrian also struck and

killed in the early hours of the new year. there, police say 36-year-old jerome butts was -- ian butts was hit by a car. the driver fled the scene. the driver who they are looking for tonight may have been in a blue or black heavy equinox. now back live, you can see the mangled metal that remains here, the police tape that remains here as well. this happening very early. just about 90 minutes into the new year here. we will have much more on both at 5:00. reporting live, brianne carter, abc7 news. kimberly: happening right now search crews are back out on the water today to look for a boater who went missing near the bay bridge. authorities say a 48-year-old man fell overboard from a sailboat near sandy point lighthouse last night and they say he was not wearing a life

jacket at the time. maryland bureau chief brad bell is at the scene and he will have the latest on the search effort. that is coming up at "abc7 news at 5:00". jonathan: i hope you enjoyed one of the warmest december in recorded history. starting the new year we have new temperatures that feel like winter. we are expected to dip below freezing a few times in the next seven days. steve rudin joining us with a first look at the forecast. we are getting sported. we like short sleeves. steve: nice while it lasted all month long. now we're in january, new year. temperatures are cooling off. 41 in chevy chase. it's 43 in falls church. 43 in ashburn. 42 herndon. satellite and radar. the clouds are out there now. the further north and west you go to the west of interstate 81, we have clearing. the clearing skies will overspread our area as we head through the overnight hours. winds getting an extra chill out there right now out of the northwest around 8:12.

the night time lows in 30, 33 degrees. we will talk about the rest of the weekend and a big blast of colder air. wouldn't you know it? just in time for everyone to head back to work and school on monday. more on that in the belfort furniture weather center. jonathan: thank you. president obama says one of the first actions will be to try to tackle gun control. he may use executive action to get it done. this is as one of the biggest gun shows in the country taking place as we speak in the d.m.v. chris papst at the dulles expo center where the gun show opened its doors. a lot of fans out there will not be fans of what the president is going to try to do. chris: a lot of people, that is quite the understatement. what the president did probably convince thousands of more people to come here and look at what the executive action may be. they will be hosting the nation gun show.

if you look here, this is only open for an hour and a half. this is nearly packed with people. the line going out the door is wrapping around the giant building. there is 1,300 tables. 300 vendors. we are talking about two miles of aisles of guns and ammunition. other weaponry if you will. this is going to deal with the gun show loophole. several firearm dealers have to do the background check of anybody buying a gun. but if they sell a gun, if i were to sell a gun to you, i would haven't to do the background check. advocates say that type of transaction is more likely at a gun show and at the fun show loophole. we talked to a man who owns one of the largest firearm dealerships in virginia. we asked him about background checks. here is what he had to say. >> i can't imagine there is a person here at the gunshow

that would want a person ineligible to have a gun to have it. >> comek up at 6:00 we will speak to jerry cochran who will argue the loophole doesn't even exist. that's at 6:00. chris papst, gnaws news. kimberly: chris, see you in an hour and a half. firefighters are working to cool down the scene of yesterday's massive fire at a 63-story hotel in dubai. did you see this? the fire is mostly died down. but embers and smoke are still billowing in the air. 14 people suffered minor injuries in the evacuation. if cause -- the cause is still under evacuation. i broke out before the new year's eve fireworks show. it went ahead as scheduled. new information about the freddie gray case. attorneys for one of the baltimore police officers charged in his death say gray

may have had back problems before he wasser arrested. lawyers for officer caesar goodson filed a sealed motion to obtain medical regards for gray last month. he complained of a bad back before his death. the attorneys refuted that and they said there was no evidence of a previous back injury. the next officer set to go to trial in the case and that begins january 11. jonathan: bill cosby has a message for fans. thank you. it came a day after the comedian was arraigned in 2004 sexual assault case. in the meantime, a court has ordered camille cosby to give defamation case against her husband. seven women sue for portraying them as liars after they accused him of sexual assault.

all the water heading south to arkansas and louisiana. jonathan: they have been cleaning up for hours. times square reopened after a million people partied to the new year. the clean-up crew began cleaning up minutes after they cleared out. dozens of the street sweepers move in. they haul away 50 tons of debris every new year's day. kimberly: fresh start in the new year. muriel bowser kicked off the fresh start 5k walk-run. we have more on the goals and the challenges in 2016.

announcer: "abc7 news at 5:00". on your side. kimberly: tonight the search is on for a driver who hit and killed a pedestrian this morning. the crash along minnesota avenue southeast came hours after another car jumped a curb, hitting four people in north weth d.c. brianne carter is live at the scene with the latest on both investigations. brianne: just here tonight you can see the debris. people here outside of a popular nightclub where this all happened early this morning. as you mentioned, police now filing charges. identifying the driver. ment to they are looking for the driver who hit and struck ian butts crossing the avenue in the early morning of the new year.
