was halted for the second time this week in china. stocks there lost more than 7% in the first hour of trading. fears about china's economic health are fueling the loss. alison: now a developing story in france where police shot and killed a man wielding a meat cleaver after he tried to enter a police station. it happened north of paris and the man wore what turned out to be a fake suicide belt. image on the isis flag on paper was also found on the man's body. this happened one year to the date of the "charlie hebdo" massacre where they stormed the office of the magazine. 12 people were killed including some of france's most famous cartoonists. five for lives lost in the subsequent attacks attacks in fe in the following days. al-qaeda in the arabian peninsula claimed responsibility for the attacks. jonathan: covering metro today in a series of attacks on passengers in the last few

weeks. so some riders are expreing security about riding the rail. stephen tschida has details for us. stephen: beefed up police presence here but it isn't necessarily because of what is going on, on metro. on monday, metro released surveillance images of the suspects in a brutal assault which took place near the noma station christmas week. it left a man according to the witnesses unconscious and with a shattered jaw. it was near this station where a man was brutally murdered on a red line train last summer. a lot of concern out there tonight. >> it kind of makes me a little uncomfortable, a little hesitant. i don't know, whatever is going on. stephen: why passengers are

expecting concerns, talking and communicating with metro through e-mail throughout the day. wmata point out the numbers that the statistics show on average for the past several years, there are 110 aggravated assault on metro every year. in 2015 the number is only slightly higher. to put it in perspective, why they are struggling overall, metro remains very safe. when you factor in the millions of the passengers who ride metro every week. reporting live, stephen tschida, abc7 news. alison: a frederick man was sentenced today to a year in jail for his involvement in a shooting outside a high school gym last year. 20-year-old chand already davenport -- hand her davenport was charged. he agreed to testify against the trigger man tyler. because of the deal, davenport

way to court. he has been upstairs in the courtroom all day. still no decision made on that sentencing. it was back in july when this explosion happened. in a remote building on the campus. loud enough to be heard in neighborhoods nearby. bartly was there. he had an accident. police uncovered the evidence that we can now show you. the evidence that shows he was in fact trying to make meth. he quickly confessed and said it was an experiment he was trying to conduct training for his fellow officer. bart pleaded guilty late last summer making meth.

1100 women flew those. including elaine. her family wanted her mother buried there. a congressman is introducing a bill to let them be buried at arlington again and the family says they appreciate the representatives picking up their fight. jonathan: 17 minors are above ground after spending the night trapped in one of the world's deepest salt mines. talk about scary. the 10-hour ordeal started when an elevator malfunctioned. reporter: after ten hours of waiting, 17 miners trapped nearly 2 it 00 feet be -- nearly 900 feet are now safe on solid ground. >> the minors displayed excellent self-discipline, control. >> the men were just starting the shift last night when the elevator they were in somehow

a "star wars" monopoly game will include rey. hasbro didn't have a game piece there in the latest game for her. but an 8-year-old wrote the company noting the omission and hasbro said it didn't want spoilers so that is why it didn't include rey when it first included the game in september. but they will add the piece in the new year. jonathan: thank you. the redskins is gearing up to play the packers but the internet was abuzz on the new stadium for the redskins. robert burton is joining us. where is it going to be? robert: washington redskins, hello. well, there has been talk about the redskins front office wanting to move the team from the fedex field in landover to another location. according to the post, they have hired the firm.

the sky. look at it carefully. took the photo on the international space station and noticed something different about the sky to the left of the picture. that is haze. that is air pollution. it exists across a large swath of asia. well, as of january 1, d.c. businesses cannot use any foam container. so now it has been a few days. are people fine with the order? are consumers happy with the change? sam ford went to find out. sam: we went to find out how it's working. you can still find foam in some places as food providers try to use it up. >> environmental services. department of energy around environment. sam: but inspectors are out there every day now looking for customers use to haul away food. they are checking the food trucks today. a number of the food truck operators, styrofoam, they don't use it. he replaced it with aluminum.

[applause] jonathan: well, tonight, president obama will make his first appearance to push for change with guns especially since announcing the executive action on gun control. he is holding a town hall meeting on the gun control plan at george mason university in fairfax. senior political reporter scott thuman live on campus right now. who is the president really trying to win over there? scott: well, jonathan, as you heard the comment a second ago he would like to win over congress. but they have been reluctant to move any of the legislation he has been proposing so he is taking the message to a broader audience going on national television. hoping that he can perhaps sway voters that might show up in polls next november and follow with the democratic white house. that at least solidifies some of the chaínges he is making right now. jonathan: does it benefit the president to do this on a college campus? can all of this still be undone? scott: yeah, that is what is

interesting, jonathan. so often we have seen in the president's seven years when he wanted to really kind of feel like he is on the home turf or has a riled up audience, he goes to the college campus. the success. formula for him to get the message out. energizes the youthful base of voters. it's interesting this time around the gun issue has narrowed as far as it used to be how long younger voters were much more for gun control. 70%. less for the gun rights. you talk about whether or not this can be undone. absolutely. this is an executive action on the gun measurements. that means that the next president could come in and undo it all if he or she so chooses to do so. a lot of the republicans so far vow to do that if they

alison: so, could this be how we're going to get around in the near future? e-hang developed a prototype of a drone that can carry people. the chinese firm debuted the prototype at the consumer electronic show in las vegas this weekend and it claims to reach height of more than 11,000 feet and 62 earn many. -- 62 miles per hour. all of this on batteries that last up to 23 minutes. jonathan: run out of batteries at 11,000 feet. alison: ugly. the company has not gotten f.a.a. approval for the devices. small detail. or gone into mass production. but you never know. jonathan: a smart car in space.

jonathan: "7 on your side" in health matters. the new dietary guidelines are out. the guidelines recommend limiting added sugar to 10% or less of calories. they are also recommending now that people eat more fruits and vegetables and whole wheat. this is a recommendation we heard before more many years. they suggest cut salt and

saturated fat. but stop short of telling people to eat less red meat or processed meat despite the suggestion they can produce cancer. they have coffee, moderate can be part of a healthy diet. yea, team. the dotitions from if benard medical center. we appreciate you being here. every year the recommendations come out a lot of people sit back and say it took you a year to come up with that? >> they come out every five year the review of research.

>> we want to have whole grains. >> we heard salt is back for you. wipe is good, wine is bad. 'ses are good, eggs are bad. >> we took it into account for this guidelines. we see a shift from more of the nutrient to focus on the protein. this time around it's a pattern. people will be consuming whole grains that have calcium, beans. soy milk and that kind of thing. they are shifting. so rather than get this much of this we want to load the plates with the vegetables. whole grains. focusing more on the foods we

can be adding rather than making specific suggestions. number one you should add more plants to your plate. really limiting the guidelines say the fods that are high in saturated fat. jonathan: portion control is a big part, too. limit the portion. >> that is a big part. with vegetables, they are so low calories and nutrient dense, load your plate up.
