kevin: more than 8 million people shop at the montgomery mall each year and they generate a lot of trash. there is a recycling program but it has room for improve. >> this is the montgomery mall in bethesda. you will see dozen of the silver garbage cans. one side spot for recycling. the other a spot for trash. >> imagine shopper kathleen surprised when she noted the glass bottles to recycle ended up in the same plastic bag as the food court trash. >> i felt like it was deceitful. alison: we called a supervisor who told us the cleaning crew couldn't keep up with the volume of the garbage so they toss everything.

announcer: you're watching "abc7 news at 6:00ment" on your side. alison: around the nation tonight in new york, foretimes are in custody and a fifth is still on the run after police say they gang raped an 18-year-old girl in a park. leon: officials released surveillance video they say shows the attackers at a store before the incident. the victim was in the park with her father and the five males approached them. the father says one of the men who approached them pulled a gun and forced him to leave. police say each of the five then raped the victim.

they range in age from 14 to 17. more than half of the public schools had to shut down as teachers called in sick as aal rolling strike. i began when a handful of schools were forced to close. today took a dramatic turn. the school district dealing with millions of dollars of debt. the governor says he wants to pay off the debt but there are no ongoing negotiations to get it done. alison: dramatic video released today of the raid that led to the arrest of drug lord joaquin "el chapo" guzman. the famed funneltive was recaptured -- famed fugetive was recaptured after the raid at his hide-out. extraditions are underway to bring him to the united states. officials say guzman secret meeting with academy award winning actor sean penn led to

cancer sunday. the 69-year-old was pop music fixture for four decades. inspiration for fans and musicians the world over. the flamboyant images has been a driving torture for 50 years with glam rock. two grammys, emmy, selling 140 million records. the last video for the song shows him frail and laying in bed singing "look up here, i'm in heaven." that was his signal to say behind. he leaves behind a wife and two children. a new cancer center getting investment from two of the richest people in world. alison: bill gates and jeff bezos who led $100 million round of funding for grail. grail is a new company developing a blood test that can detect many kinds of cancer earlier than doctors are currently able to. grail claims the test costs $1,000 or less. and will be available by 2019.

grail's new test use aztec nic called a liquid biopsy and scans the bloodstream of the patients for sign of cancer d.n.a. which can indicate a tumor is growing. well, after a bumpy road in recent years the honda civic made its way to the top and named the 201 north american car of the year. automotive journalists from u.s. and canada decide the award. sales fell while rivals including the carolla and the alantra soared. it won the title in 2006. leon: the powerball jackpot now the world's largest in history. more than $1.4 billion. the drawing is set for wednesday. brad bell is planning to get a ticket and he has more live
