it is, everybody is upset and scared. they work hard to allow residents to feel safe and prevent those things from happening. kevin: again, d.c. police nab amounted sexual assaulter off the street four days after being featured in the "7 on your side" wall of justice series. much more at 5:00. for now we are live in northwest. i'm kevin lewis, abc7 news. jonathan: thank you very much. in prince george's county police are investigating the death of a 6-month-old girl. they say she died at the hands of her mother's boyfriend. sadly, this isn't the first time that this has happened in the county in the last two years. brad bell joining us live to explain. very sad. brad: we are told there have been five deaths of children in the last two years at the hands of mothers, boyfriends. we want to show you the man right now the police say is responsible for latest crime. his name is kareem bryant.

23 years old. his official address is in the district. but police say he was living in landover with his girlfriend. staying in the apartment. when he was briefly left alone with 6-month-old ryatt tillman and her twin brothers. still not sure what happened but the police say the child was found to have been killed. blunt force injuries to the head and to the chest. as we said, this has been a problem in particular in prince george's county over the last couple of years. tonight the state's attorney is speaking out. >> we as parents have got to do a better job of being careful about who we bring around our children. they are not murdered on the street. they are murdered by people who know them. brad: when we come back at 5:00, we have more details about the case and hear more

join us tuesday night for town hall round table on guns in america. chief political correspondent scott thuman will be live to look at the gun laws. the panel has a sheriff, local gun store owner and wife of a survivor of the navy yard shooting. that is tuesday at 7:00 on the sister station newschannel8. michelle: now to the race for the white house. hours after last night's republican presidential debate in his home state, south carolina saturday lindsey graham endorsed jeb bush in the g.o.p. primary. known for his hawkish stand on national security, graham praised the former governor's plan to fight terrorism. the endorsement comes a month after graham dropped out of the race. post debate, a lot of talk is about ted cruz's new york comments. jonathan: he was talking about donald trump when he said this. >> everyone understands that the values in new york city a

socially liberal, pro gay marriage, pro-abortion and focused around money and the media. not a lot of conservatives come out of manhattan. i'm just saying. jonathan: trump responded invoking the strength of new yorkers in the wake of the september 11 attacks but other responses have been angrier. leon harris is here with a look at some of those. leon: "angrier?" that's one way to put it. if you talk to anyone from new york they value the city. it doesn't matter what borough they come from. when the city is attacked as many say cruz did, believe me, they stand up for themselves. >> i think ted cruz has created a lot of anger here and a lot of people around the country will see this as divisive and negative. he owes the people of new york an apology. >> not just what he said is anti-new york, it's anti-american. it's sad and disturbing for all americans. not just for new york.

by midday they fell 530 on the dow. they're still fluctuating but right now down 390 points on the big board. all of this is tied in to what is happening with the chinese economy and other things like crude oil now at $30 a barrel. things are rough right now. michelle: retail stocks are down including wal-mart. they have broken ground. today wal-mart announced it's canceling plans to build two more stores in the district. the pullback is part of a plan to close 259 stores around the world. one was planned at the skyland town center in southeast. the other is at the capitol gateway marketplace in northeast. d.c. bureau chief sam ford is live in southeast with reaction. sam? sam: i want you to just look at the pounds of dirt over here. the mounds of dirt is where the wal-mart was supposed to be. they were planning a whole project for skyland that

extended all the way over here. this is huge, massive lot. all of this was planned for this wal-mart. anchor center. and now the anchor is not going to be here. wal-mart plans to lay off 10,000 workers in the u.s. in the midst of this, two wal-mart stores that were to be built in d.c. according to the announcement now will not be. this is a shock to be in the area. including developers who are working on the project. wal-mart released a statement this afternoon. saying our experience over the last three years operating our current stores in d.c. has given us a fuller view on building and operating stores in the district. this decision will not affect our three existing stores and we look forward to continuing to serve these customers in the future." and we have with us a mayor,

former mayor vincent gray. this was your project. i mean i know you were fighting very hard for this. >> absolutely. sam: what is your reaction to what has happened? >> this is a devastating outrage that wal-mart has pulled. they ought to be ashamed of what they have done. they need to rescind the decision. they made a commitment to the people of the district of columbia and the people of the district of columbia especially those on the east end in ward seven and eight have been anticipating this, they have been expecting this. every time i come in the c.v.s., adjacent to us people are talking and smiling about the fact this project was going to happen and wal-mart was coming. the c.v.s. was ready move out, as you can see, to my right here and moving to temporary quarters on another part of the site. sam: way down there. that was the temporary cvs. >> slated to open on the 31st of january. sam: so they could stay here. what happens with this now? the city must have spent a ton of money. how much did the city spend on

they disappeared after the helicopters collided in a nighttime training mission. the military along with the coast guard and the local authorities are searching a debris field off oahu. the search is hampered by rough seas. jonathan: well, botched drug trial leaves a patient dead and at least five others facing possible permanent brain damage. french prosecutors right now are looking into what went wrong in testing of a drug to teach mood anxiety and other problems linked to neurodegenerative diseases. but authorities are in the process of contacting the rest of the participants to check on the status. there were 90 people involved in the drug test study. michelle: efforts to tear down the old "washington post" headquarters hit a snag. jonathan: we'll explain why chipotle will be closing all the restaurants at least for a little while. michelle: we are getting new information about the cause of this fire in ocean city. >> some skilled and very organized thieves are coming to this.

the cause of the giant fire that gutted an ocean city condo complex wednesday. investigators ruled the fire is accidental and say it was started by a generator in a parking area. nobody was hurt but the thick black smoke could be seen for miles. because it's off-season the complex largely was empty except for construction workers that were working in the area. michelle: we all know the commute can be tough enough in our area. but some folks choosing to carpool are coming back to the lot in woodbridge to find vehicles vandalized. jay korff is there to explain. jay? jay: yeah, guys, busy time right now. people are coming from work and picking up their vehicles. i want to paint a pictur where we are. 95 is over that way. this is the busiest lot in all of northern virginia. we have in the neighborhood of seven or eight different parking lots, thousands of cars. here is what the bad guys are doing. they are coming up to vehicles and removing the lug nuts. is not only are they taking a tire but they are taking the

trail. folks have been working hard to get everything ready to key off. they are doing painting and getting the panda habitat ready to go. they have already placed signs out. less than 24 hours before the public will start lining up. look at what it says there. get in line early because it will be very busy. across the path here, the gift shop is open this afternoon. they have already been busy stacking up the panda merchandise for the big day. since august of last year when they had the twins thousands of people in the d.c. area and around the country have been logging on to the national zoo's panda cam. that has been the only way to get a grips of bei bei. well, that is all about to change. at 9:00 tomorrow morning the public will finally be able to come into the zoo and see d.c.'s newest celebrity in person. >> people here love the pandas. it's going to be crazy. in an amazing way. it will be a community and

michelle: breaking news now from the supreme court about the bob mcdonald case. leon harris is in the newsroom with the details. leon: we just learned that the supreme court justices will hear an appeal from the former virginia governor bob mcdonald. he is seeking to overturn the corruption conviction. he and his wife were convicted in 2014 for doing favors for wealthy businessman johnny williams in exchange for $170,000 in gift and loans from the company. it will be argued in april and a decision in june. that is important for maureen

board is giving virginia power thumbs up on the company's plan to handle coal ash. that is the stuff left over after the power plants are using coal to produce electricity. the plant will allow dominion to drain treated old ash water to quantico creek. it's a creek that drains in the potomac river. the prince george's county board of supervisors may suit for public input on the proposal. >> the obama administration is putting a halt on the new coal leases on federal land. interior secretary made the announcement this morning. the government said the program habit changed in 30 years and it needs to be reviewed. jonathan: employees with the "washington post" moved in the new offices at the end of last year but plans the demolish the old headquarters building is not sitting well with the neighbors. sam sweeney is joining us live to explain why that is. sam? zach who would think the building would make headlines again? today it is. demolition began on the iconic building a few days ago.

the people who live in the condos surrounding this building are not happy. the city issued the demolition company here a permit to work 24 hours a day. seven days a week. from now all the way through the end of april. normally the permits are only issued in emergency situations. when people's lives or the property are in danger. neighbors say that is not the case here. they are not happy about it. they want answers. >> the district did a great job when they came up with the noise control regulation and when they came up with the permitting regulations with respect to construction and afterhours activity in particular. we would like them to stick to their own regulations. >> now we reached out to the properties at the demolition crew in charge of the project. they told us that the 24-hour permit is necessary because it would allow them to work in

michelle: astronauts on the international space station preparing for a spacewalk took a photo of hurricane alex in the atlantic. tonight alex weakened to a tropical storm and moving away from the azores. the first january hurricane since 1938. a record-setter. alex caused minor damage to the island. residents report down trees and loss of power but little damage to buildings and homes. jonathan: a spacewalk,always fun to do those things. michelle: great pictures we get to see. jonathan: no question. michelle: the spacewalk was cut short after one of the astronauts reported moisture in the helmet. jonathan: it is never a good thing. it ended early but it was historic for the united kingdom. alison starling has more. alison: hi. astronaut tim peake became the first british citizen to walk in space under his country's

flag. before today the only brit to walk in space had dual citizenship and were members of nasa. so it successfully replaced a piece of equipment that regulates power from the solar panels. the equipment failed two months ago and that cut a power by the eighth. so the astronauts had to complete the repair in darkness to panels would not collect electricity from the sun. they only had 31 minutes to get it done. they had to complete the repairs before the sun came back in view. no pressure whatsoever. only 31 minutes. the astronauts completed other tasks, though, including installing cables for new docking ports. for tim peake, astronaut we mentioned he received well wishers on twitter from the british prime minister and paul mccartney. how about that? jonathan: nice. name-dropper. thanks. astronomers found the brightest super nova ever discovered. the exploding star that shines with incredible luminosity. this particular super nova is

playing goalie, sometimes on crumb rubber. after news reports including our own exposed concerns about a potential link between crumb and cancer, he says virginia needs to stop putting stuff down in places where the kids play. crumb rubber concerns have come to light in recent month with the athletes counting more than 200 reported cancer cases after playing on crumb rubber. it's made up of ground up tires. delegate simon from falls church pitched a bill to call for three-year moratorium on the installation of the crumb rubber in virginia. they went all in and said it was not a hazard. but simon wants the state department of health to do its own study.

arrested the 25-year-old at a home in southeast. cops say latney is solely responsible for a string of sex assault robberies. five in total. all across d.c. including in the capitol hill neighborhood. each attack took place between 7:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. the recent occurring new year's eve night. he would approach his victims from behind and violently hit them in the head. >> the urgency was ramped up. when we realize it's the same person. kevin: police chief cathy lanier say the assaults began november 24, two days before thanksgiving when latney ran away from his halfway house. >> a person was attacked, walking home from work, walking in their own community. that community no matter where it is. everybody is upset and scared. i think that is why we work so hard to try to make sure the residents do feel safe and we work so diligently to prevent those things from
