now the search for the shooter is intensifying. >> the concert advertised on facebook is a show of love, peace, unity and it ended in fear and violence. >> the building got hit. >> he owned the services, a government contracting office where one bullet fired from 75 yards away went through a window, door, and two walls before being stopped by a bookcase. former marine he took one look at the damage and knew what he was seeing. >> a hollow point or another round it was designed to kill. >> it featured scar face and go-go band. a fight inside the venue filled in the street where a man fired 15 to 100 crowds into a group of people. >> it's a brazen attack. it's scary and unusual.

>> two other men drove to a hospital where they reported being shot in the fight. falls church police chief say the witnesses are not helpful in the search for the suspect and a motive. >> it makes it hard to follow police when you don't have many. >> they own it next to the state theater. >> this is a safe area. >> no comment from the owners or the managers of the theater. they are looking for help to solve the crime. if you have any information, please come forward. alison: t.s.a. officers stop a woman carrying a load handgun on a flight at the dulles

international airport over the weekend. they found it loaded with six bullets in an x-ray scan at t.s.a. checkpoint sunday. the police confiscated this and charged her with a weapons charge. this is the second gun in the past week. leon: new proposal would make it easier for people in prince william county to get handgun permits. they waved all fees to pass the existing background check. if approved prince william would be the first to pass this. we will talk about the gun violence, support for the second amendment and if president's push for more gun control. that is tomorrow at 7:00 on the sister station newschannel8. alison: the search continues for two helicopters that

crashed. one of them is the brother of haely jardas, miss d.c. we have more on what we are learning about the miss marines. >> two helicopters crashed off the north shore and coast guard chief petty officer sarah moore believes three life rafts brought on the aircraft have been recovered but it's not clear how they were inflated. the search continued around the clock when the coast guard was notified of the crash. they fought waves as high as 30 feet. one of the missing marines thomas jardas is the brother of the reigning miss d.c. she posted on the facebook page my little brother was lost doing what he loved. he has always been and will always be my most important person.

saturday. it is starting out in the pacific ocean. many storms start this way with a big area of low pressure. moving across the u.s. interacts with the winds and that is what we look at. over the course of the next few days it will make a transcontinental trip. it should develop to the lower mississippi valley and move northeast. this is a generic track. in these storms a difference in the track of 40 to 50 miles will make all the difference in the world. affect snow and how much will be rain. those are the things that can't be worked out. the storm hasn't formed yet. we are relying on the computer model guidance. the energy is pacific. the track changes are likely. we see it in model run to model run. the potential is there. there could be mix of rain and snow or one or the other but it is the best chance so far. let's zoom in to look at the way we think about things. friday morning plenty of cold air in place. the northeast u.s. we have to determine the

track. we think there is positive evidence on the models that will come to the southeast. this is huge. if the storm comes west we will get the warm air and all rain. if it stays too far south it will take the energy off the coast. the ideal track is to move from there directly offshore. that will keep us in the moisture and keep us in the cold air. that is a possibility. but it's not a probability yet. a lot of sunshine. cold and breezy. 28 tomorrow. warmer on wednesday with a little disturbance wednesday night. on thursday, bright and sunny. clouds arrive. right now we are putting 70% chance of the rain and/or snow or mix or one or the other. developing friday through friday night and saturday. with the potential of the areas cold enough of getting significant snow. clearing out through sunday. turning noticeably warmer through next week. we are watching it tonight. there is the potential of

winter weather and the common cold go hand in hand. a new review from the canadian medical association has interesting tips on how to fight back. the first is obvious. seems obvious. researchers found hand washing was the most effective method to prevent catching a cold. those taking zinc has fewer colds in kids. the usual vitamin c did not help the average patient and echinacea didn't either. almost all colds are caused by the viruses so taking antibiotics is not recommended. another note, your winter gloves may keep you warm but could it make you sick? they could be crawling with germs. result of an abc7 news test revealed 26 out of 27 samples testing positive for bacteria. most are harmless but nine of the sample tested positive for bacteria like staph and mrsa

it's ok! announcer: you're watching "abc7 news at 5:00". on your side. leon: in some d.c. neighborhoods residents are complaining about trash piling up in and around public garbage bins. mike carter-conneen reports the source of the problem. mike: across northwest d.c., several garbage bins are overflowing and sidewalks are trashedded. >> it has gotten worse. mike: lately there have been christmas trees and mattresses. >> i have seen a mattress or two out there. >> the problem seems to be the worst in the dense neighborhoods. residents say the bins fill up

almost as soon as they are empty. they are surrounded by three trash bags. >> this is disgusting. have to come and put the trash to clean it up. mike: neighbors blame apartment building landlord for the problem. under the d.c. code, they won't collect garbage from buildings with four or more units and the neighbors believe when the land lords don't pay for trash collection the tenants legally dump. >> we want to make sure the services are sped up. >> not only are they an eyesore, they attract bugs and rats. >> it's not ideal. especially by the columbia, you can see a whole rats nest out of a horror movie. >> it's so bad a neighborhood commission passed a resolution calling on the d.c. government to verify whether the local residential buildings have dumpster or contract for pride trash collection. the consumer and the regulatory afires says waste management confinement will

create safety and quality of life for the residents. the department of public works are in receipt of the request and are committed to work together to address it. in the meantime, the angry residents hope they will get the message and stop dumping. in northwest, mike carter-conneen, abc7 news. alison: officials with prince william county schools will meet to discuss recent threatening messages to wood bridge, garfield and forest park high school. there is a town hall meeting at 7:00. still ahead at 6:00, you will hear what parents we spoke to are saying about the children's safety following the recent threats. leon: parents and the residents of prince george's county took action this morning armed with a strong message. stop the violence. organizers rallied in landover hoping to attract attention to the cause. ralliers want children back on the right track, away from violence. they hope the rally is the beginning.

jennifer: hello. i'm jennifer donelan. this is the "7 on your side" "fighting back: wall of justice." we have three murder summits on the wall behind me who will start in the district where we have good news to report. melvin latney was arrested last week and he was charged with five cases where he targeted women walkin by themselves. staying in the district, they are adding dominic williams to the wall where he is facing first-degree murder charge. police ramp up the search for him and for john james who is also wanted for murder in d.c. there is william lewis. d.c. police have been looking for him for weeks for murder. moving to arlington, the

detectives there adding stephen thompson to the wall for allegedly breaking into his girlfriend's apartment and beating her. he joins rojelio wanted for assault and battery. let's set the wall of justice in motion. the spotlight on john james. one of the three murder suspects in the district. take a close look at 23-year-old john james. d.c. homicide detectives say he is responsible for shooting and killing a 21-year-old man and wounding a second man in september 11 of -- second man in september of last year. >> he has already proven he is willing to take the life of another resident. it's imperative we identify where the whereabouts are and take him into custody. >> police say john james is 6'2", weighs 160 pounds. 23 and has brown eyes.

alison: well, president obama and first lady celebrated martin luther king day by attending a community service event at lucky elementary school in southwest. the president and the first lady packed bags with books for children in need. they also planted vegetables with the students. that was part of michelle obama's let's move initiative. many children from military families attend this school. leon: we are celebrating something ourselves at the station with our family. we are saying goodbye and good luck to an abc7 employee who is retiring after 42 years.

recall. the grocery chain said trader joe raw cashew pieces in 30 states could be on the tam -- contaminated with salmonella. they are pulling them from shelves while investigation is conducted. leon: uber is saving lives, too. the virginia department of motor vehicles said the commissioner says there was a 22% drop in alcohol-related deaths this year. a stat he attributes to the apps like uber and lift. he says it's too early to give services all the credit. but other states are making the same assumption looking at their numbers as well. let's see how it is going with jamie sullivan in traffic watch. jamie: the one problem spot we are dealing with is the baltimore washington parkway. heading north and southbound to the teens as you get close to mount goddard. 95 in maryland and virginia how light we are.

the big news here is one month after the opening, "star wars: the force awakens" was bumped from first down to third. making an estimated $25 million this weekend. well, backlash is growing today over the lack of diversity in this year's oscar nominations. in a message posted to social media, actress jada pinkett smith will boycott the award. we have a report from los angeles. >> i will not be at the academy awards and i won't be watching. >> she took the firm statement to the facebook page overnight. coming days after husband will smith best actor snubbed for his role in "concussion." none of the 20 acting nomination went to a person of color. >> begging for acknowledgment. asking diminishes dignity.
