that. yesterday and today the d.c. shelter hotline received 550 phone calls, many requesting transportation, safety checks and warming items. last night the district hypothermia and the warming site served 271 men and 91 women. the numbers certainly not expected to shrink tonight. if you need help call 800-535-7252. we have, the number online. but winter has also brought fun. today hundreds flock to the martin luther king jr. memorial to reflect, to pay tribute to the civil rights leader. even australian prime minister paid a visit this afternoon. others spent the holiday taking to the ice rink at the georgetown water front. who doesn't like spending $15 a person to rent skates and freeze your tail off. >> when we first get out here, yeah, it was freezing. >> ice skating is a good

weather app right to your smartphone. leon? leon: the frigid temperatures outside didn't stop a couple of thousand people from coming out to celebrate the legacy of dr. martin luther king jr. ♪ ♪ leon: that is a good way to keep warm. people of all ages marching through the street of d.c. for the annual martin luther king jr. day parade. they said dr. king's message was more important than the cold weather. >> you don't have to be afraid to be amongst each other. >> like dr. king said, whatever affects one of us affects all of us. leon: the president and the first lady joined students in a service project at lucky elementary school in southwest washington today. there they helped build garden bed and passed out books to children. among the issue that dr. king fought for was better wages. today airport workers pointed to that message as they marched through d.c. and even blocking traffic at one point. brianne carter lays out what they are demanding. brianne:

on this martin luther king jr. day, airport workers and supporters marched through the street of d.c., at times sitting in the street. demanding change when it comes to what they call gross injustices and humiliating working condition. the group of the airport baggage handlers, wheelchair attendants amongst others say they will do whatever it takes to get a $15 hour minimum wage and union rights for every worker. >> i am going to fight so i have no fight left in me. >> trey is a baggage handler at reagan national airport and says he lives with a roommate because he can't afford respect by himself. >> they have to work two or three jobs to make ends meet. not only are they asking for more money, but more benefits as well. >> i fight for my friends. and my friends in different companies.

>> those who support plan to take action on the hill. >> next week i will be requesting a hearing on the disregard and the abuse by airlines and the airports. of the passengers and their workers. brianne: today's protest was part of a large scale civil disobedience demonstration across nine cities including new york and boston. cities are some protesters were arrested. in southwest washington, brianne carter, abc7 news. maureen: a concert that was supposed to celebrate peace ends in fear and violence. three people were shot shortly after a concert at the state theater on north washington street. police say the violence began with a fight at the scarface concert and ended when someone opened fire into a crowd a block away. three people were hurt but will survive. police have not identified a suspect. leon: coming up on "abc7 news at 6:00" -- the navy directive that could change the title that has been

reporter: three high school hit with threats last week. >> it's terrifying hearing all the stuff that is going on. reporter: prince william county public school official says the messages were inside forest park and woodbridge high school. carlito mccoy is a junior at garfield. for him the threat hit a bit too close to home. >> you hear about stuff like this and the other schools in different states. when it happens in your county it's shocking. reporter: his dad said the town hall at 7:00 will help to answer questions. >> this is the world we live in now. parents nod to be more involved with what is going on in the school, as well as the kids. not come late to the party. >> the parents told me they first heard of the threat in text message, e-mail and social media and say the updates like this one about tonight's meeting have continued to come in. >> school officials say police

were involved immediately. so far, no credible threats were made. officials from throughout the county plan to come out to tonight's meeting on the active investigation. hoping to answer any final questions from the community. >> i just want a snapshot to see where the school board as well as the police department, where they are at, what the mindset is and how they are proceeding. reporter: amy ae barbur, abc7 news. alison: a big shift could come to the navy. the secretary of the navy ordinaried the chief ofnail operations to review -- of naval operation to review title of the positions in the navy and say women serve in virtually all capacity in the navy and it is time to remove the word "man" from titles. that could include changing rank of midshipman after the naval academy. recommendations are expected in april. leon: 70 more national guard troops in flint, michigan, to help the city deal with the ongoing water crisis. yesterday they visited 5,000 homes and provided free

bottled water and fire departmenters for the families there. president obama signed an emergency order over the weekend. the city's drinking water became contaminated with lead after they switched away from the water system in cost-savoring move. alison: family in prince george's county narrowly escaped injury after a large tree crashed through the house. maureen: fire officials say five people got out unharmed including a 9-month-old baby. the tree fell on the family dining room table on top of the booster seat. fortunately even was still in bed. fire officials say strong winds are to blame. we have seen them and felt them the last few days. leon: i saw branches all over my neighborhood driving in today. doug: we have gusty winds tonight and cold air. the combination is not good. not good at all. maureen: it will be bringing snow our way? doug: by the end of the week storm system over the pacific will do that. a lot of stuff to share with you. start with what we know. it is cold outside now. there is no doubt about that.

take a look at the numbers. 34 for the high officially in washington. deceiving there because it naps 20 after 1:00 this -- happened after 10 after 1:00. then the strong winds came in. we have been in the low 20's all day. low of 18. there are more above average january days than below but the next couple are coming in blue. short-term we have the wind and the cold. that's enough to prompt issue of the wind chill advisory in effect until noon for areas north and west and southwest of the metro area. the wind chill is below zero tomorrow morning. the current temperatures mid-teens north and west. 19 in leesburg. 19 in culpeper. 19 at andrews. 20 in the capital. the real deal is the feels-like temperature. wind chill. it will be cold on the thermometer. what it feels like tomorrow morning this will give you much more to work with heading

from work or school. to feel like seven below in martinsburg, and four below in hagerstown. leesburg is four below. same in ash burn. same in frederick county. in local zone look at these wind chills projected by tomorrow. 6 below in poolsville. 4 below in fairfax. upper marlboro 2 below. the same across huntingtown and chesapeake beach. the forecast for tomorrow we keep sunshine, dry air, the gusty winds and the cool temperatures. high of 28 at best. but gusty winds will stay in teens all day long. work to wednesday. flurry late in the day. thursday is sunny. the weekend, friday nd saturday. interesting here. we have area of low pressure, elongated trough. valley of low pressure in the pacific to make a move toward the coast. then as many of the type of systems do, they originate in the pacific and move to the rookies. they dive south. gulf moisture and develop in a low pressure center to move northeast. the rub is it depends where it

moves in the northeast. difference of 40 to 50 miles will make a difference of snow, mix of rain or snow or all rain. all of those things are possible. all i can do is set up potential of the nor'easter. friday morning, plenty of cold air. we have to wait for the storm. on the colder side of the storm is rain and snow with the mix. if it moves the way we think, then our area has a chance of measurable snow. if it tracks northwest it will bring us warm air and rain. if it tracks too far east or south we don't get much of anything. so realize the potential, not a forecast yet. but the potential is there for is not only snow but a mix and it represents the best chance so far this winter of something significant. so, flurries like wednesday. sunshine thursday. 70% probability on friday. friday night especially through saturday. wintry mess. clearing and milder weather next week. i think i'm going to rest for a minute. leon: okay. you rest up. you will be busy later. boy, what a big blow for

erin: you're committed to maryland. talk about that decision. why did you choose to go there? >> easy. family, my mom. my biggest support. making that decision. so it was obviously, you know, the best decision for me and my family. erin: that was jones, two months ago. i sat down with him about his decision to go to maryland. today he flipped the switch and committed to ohio state instead. he is not the only one. the quarterback duane haskins did the same thing. so now two of the terps "america's most wanted" important commitment left high and dry. he was the number three quarterback in the 2016 class and says it what always been a dream to play for the buckeyes. haskins had been committed since may. jones was committed to maryland for more than 13 months. on this martin luther king day
