announcer: now "abc7 news at 6:00". on your side. maureen: it has been a bitter-cold day in d.c. the good news is the cold will end. but by the end of the week we could be in for a big snowstorm. leon: you know how much we love big storms here. getting all worked up about them. maureen: absolutely. leon: we are good at that. we are good at tracking the cold and the storm for you tonight. we will get to stephen tschida with a look at how people are coping with the cold in a bit. but first, get to the chief meteorologist doug hill tracking the storm that is still forming. doug: the storm and the energy is the basis for the system yet to develop is over the pacific northwest and the u.s. we have time to work with it. we are following everything. it still looks likelihood to affect the large viewing area as well. it's cold and clear outside the belfort furniture weather center. low to mid-20's around the area. 25 in washington. the wind will feel like 13 above. feels like 7 in winchester.

we will be clear and cold and the wind will decrease a bit. with 12 to the 19 degree temperatures and the 5 to 10-mile-per-hour winds it will put the chill in the single digits overnight. planning ahead for the day tomorrow. watch sunshine early on. increasing cloudiness. 35 for a high. cold front could bring flurries or a snowshower by the evening hours tomorrow. we jump ahead to friday and saturday. that is the time frame we see a threat for a significant storm. gusty winds. cold temperatures will be part of this. we continue to watch the computer models here. 2:00 in the afternoon on friday is when the snow will develop. the trends will change but all the computer modeling we see continues to suggest a significant if not a major storm will develop friday, friday night and saturday in the midatlantic and the potential exists that the viewing area could be part of the area that gets a heck of a lot of snow.

by this time tomorrow, we will put numbers out. we will leave it at that. steve rudin will be back with more in a few minutes. maureen: thank you, doug. breaking news right now out of northwest washington. leon: jay korff is live on 14th street where the police are investigating a shooting. what can you tell us at this point? jay: we have a couple of crime scenes. this is 4100 block of 14 street in northwest, heart of columbia heights. another crime scene across the street. there is yellow tape near the lobby. we know that they -- hold up. we have a loud fire truck. [siren] bear with me. we know authorities confirmed that an adult male was shot. and was found in this vicinity. based on the fact we saw crime investigators over there. we think that person fell on

that side of the street. this is a very busy area. we have some descriptions. the descriptions are specific. there were two involved in the shooting. one person was armed and had long red dreadlocks. another on a bike and wearing a ski mask. at this hour there is no motive in the case. reporting live in northwest washington, jay korff, abc7 news. leon: thank you. jay. we are following a developing story out of forestville where the search is on for a driver involved in a hit-and-run crash on the beltway. this happened pennsylvania avenue at the beltway before 7:30 a.m. police have identified the victim as 37-year-old from upper marlboro.

firefighters had hair hands full in chillum in the wake of a deadly fire. two grandparents and the twin grandchildren died from flames raced through the house on knollbrook drive. the mother of the twins jumped out of the second floor. two others were able to get out of there without injuries. the investigators don't consider it to be suspicious. they are focusing on the first floor for the cause of the blaze. maureen: a virginia man accused of trying to travel to syria to join isis and the man who helped him set up the connection appeared in court. jeff goldberg was also in courtroom in alexandria following the case. jeff: family members of 25-year-old elhassan cried loud in court watching the sibling stand in front of a judge. outside his attorney -- >> my client is innocent of the charges. jeff: alleging that the federal government fabricated the whole case and they claim to have stopped a terror

threat after makeing for a. >> this is unfair to the public. this is not true. it does detriment to the family. jeff: elhassan and farrokh both of woodbridge charged with supporting isis. they began the involvement with the terror group in november of last year. authorities say last friday elhassan drove farrokh to location near the richmond airport where farrokh planned to fly eventually to syria to fight for isis. anate tv of pennsylvania was arrested before boarding the flight. elhassan the legal resident from sudan was arrested friday night in woodbridge after allegedly making a number of false statements to f.b.i. agents. >> very shocking. don't even know what happened or what is going on. jeff: tahir knows both men from the islamic community center for woodbridge.

maureen: we have the story of a colorado couple who drove halfway across the country to deliver a message to volkswagen.

storm. this could have a lot of snow. major impact and the storm. the exact track is uncertain. be we think you should prepare for this. by this time tomorrow, we will have several computer model runs under the belt with the newer data. it will help focus on what we will deal with. the western suburb and the southwest probably has the best chance for heaviest snow. friday and saturday. no mix expected. there is a chance of a mix closer to the by a. we feel the suburban county north and southwest will have the heavy snow likely.
